Pseudomonas fluorescens pneumonia.

Pseudomonas fluorescens (P. fluorescens) is not generally considered a bacterial pathogen in humans; however, multiple culture-based and culture-independent studies have identified it in the indigenous microbiota of multiple body sites. We herein report a rare case of pneumonia caused by P. fluorescens. A man in his 80 s with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and diabetes mellitus was diagnosed with stage II rectal cancer. He underwent laparoscopic surgery, and on the 6th postoperative day, he developed a high fever. Chest computed tomography revealed infiltration in the left lower lung. G

Cyanide production by Pseudomonas fluorescens and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

Of 200 water isolates screened, five strains of Pseudomonas fluorescens and one strain of Pseudomonas aeruginosa were cyanogenic. Maximum cyanogenesis by two strains of P. fluorescens in a defined growth medium occurred at 25 to 30 degrees C over a pH range of 6.6 to 8.9. Cyanide production per cell was optimum at 300 mM phosphate. A linear relationship was observed between cyanogenesis and the log of iron concentration over a range of 3 to 300 microM. The maximum rate of cyanide production occurred during the transition from exponential to stationary growth phase. Radioactive tracer experimen

Probing of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Pseudomonas aureofaciens, Burkholderia (Pseudomonas) cepacia, Pseudomonas fluorescens, and Pseudomonas putida with the ferripyochelin receptor A gene and the synthesis of pyochelin in Pseudomonas aureofaciens, Pseudomonas fluorescens, and Pseudomonas putida.

The ferripyochelin receptor A (fptA) gene codes for the transport of the ferrisiderophore ferripyochelin in Pseudomonas aeruginosa. A P. aeruginosa fptA internal fragment was used to probe chromosomal DNA from P. aureofaciens, B. cepacia, P. fluorescens, P. putida, and five strains of P.aeruginosa. These bacteria all contained DNA that hybridized to the fptA fragment. Four of the five P. aeruginosa strains displayed marked and identical patterns, indicating a high degree of sequence similarities among these strains. DNA from the non-P. aeruginosa bacteria, in contrast, hybridized less to the f

Iron metabolism in Pseudomonas: salicylic acid, a siderophore of Pseudomonas fluorescens CHAO.

Under iron-starvation conditions of growth, Pseudomonas fluorescens CHA0, a soil isolate involved in phytopathogenic fungi antagonisms, produced, together with pyoverdine, a second iron-chelating compound which was purified and identified by spectroscopy, HPLC and 1H-NMR to be salicylic acid. Mutants unable to synthesize pyoverdine overproduced this compound by a factor of 9-14. The biosynthesis of salicylic acid was under iron control; it was fully inhibited by 5 microM added iron in the growth medium. In contrast, salicylic acid of either bacterial or commercial origin facilitated labeled ir

Novel Pseudomonas fluorescens septic sacroiliitis in a healthy soldier.

Septic sacroiliitis is an uncommon infection of immunocompetent patients, typically caused by gram-positive bacteria, with fewer gram-negative cases, and only 5% attributed to Pseudomonas species. We present a healthy soldier with the first reported case of Pseudomonas fluorescens septic sacroiliitis and discuss unique diagnostic and management issues. Because of its rare incidence and nonspecific presentation, septic sacroiliitis is often unrecognized, and its diagnosis is often delayed. Increased awareness of septic sacroiliitis as a potential disease process in the differential diagnosis of

Serotonin modulation of metabolism and stress response in Pseudomonas fluorescens.

BACKGROUND: Pseudomonas fluorescens is a Gram-negative bacterium with a remarkable metabolic and physiological versatility that enables it to adapt and colonize diverse ecological niches, including the human small intestine. While serotonin is primarily found in high concentrations in gut tissue, its levels in the lumen can be elevated in conditions such as celiac disease, where P. fluorescens is also found in increased abundance. The potential effects of serotonin on P. fluorescens in such contexts remain unclear. RESULTS: We demonstrate that P. fluorescens metabolizes serotonin primarily in

Pseudomonas fluorescens Pneumonia: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Pseudomonas fluorescens is a rare, environmental Gram-negative bacterium that has been rarely reported as a cause of respiratory tract infections. This paper presents a case of a 72-year-old male who developed community-acquired pneumonia due to P. fluorescens. The diagnosis was made by sputum culture and he responded to meropenem treatment. A literature search revealed three previously reported cases of P. fluorescens pneumonia. These cases primarily affected elderly male patients. All reported patients demonstrated positive clinical outcomes following appropriate antimicrobial therapy. This

Prevalence and characterization of Pseudomonas fluorescens and Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolates from breast chicken meat.

BACKGROUND: Although chicken meat is a major source of dietary protein globally, it is highly prone to microbial spoilage, especially under refrigeration, posing economic and public health risks. Psychrotrophic Pseudomonas spp., particularly Pseudomonas fluorescens and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, are key spoilage organisms due to their enzyme production, biofilm formation, and cold tolerance. AIM: This study determined the prevalence, virulence gene profiles, enzymatic activity, and antibiotic resistance profiles of P. fluorescens and P. aeruginosa isolated from raw chicken meat sold in supermark

Gaseous NO2 induces various envelope alterations in Pseudomonas fluorescens MFAF76a.

Anthropogenic atmospheric pollution and immune response regularly expose bacteria to toxic nitrogen oxides such as NO• and NO2. These reactive molecules can damage a wide variety of biomolecules such as DNA, proteins and lipids. Several components of the bacterial envelope are susceptible to be damaged by reactive nitrogen species. Furthermore, the hydrophobic core of the membranes favors the reactivity of nitrogen oxides with other molecules, making membranes an important factor in the chemistry of nitrosative stress. Since bacteria are often exposed to endogenous or exogenous nitrogen oxides

Early gene expression in Pseudomonas fluorescens exposed to a polymetallic solution.

The molecular response of Pseudomonas fluorescens cells exposed to a mixture of heavy metals remains largely unknown. Here, we studied the temporal changes in the early gene expression of P. fluorescens cells exposed to three doses of a polymetallic solution over two exposure times, through the application of a customized cDNA microarray. At the lowest metal dose (MD/4), we observed a repression of the Hsp70 chaperone system, MATE and MFS transporters, TonB membrane transporter and histidine kinases, together with an overexpression of metal transport (ChaC, CopC), chemotaxis and glutamine synt

Characterization of mild thermal stress in Pseudomonas fluorescens and its repair.

The exposure of exponentially growing Pseudomonas fluorescens P7 cells to heating at 36 C for 2 h in a defined medium, followed by cooling to 25 C and further incubation at this, the optimal growth temperature, resulted in the apparent death of approximately 99% of the cells, as determined by their inability to form colonies on Trypticase soy agar. Continued incubation at 25 C resulted in an extremely rapid increase in the Trypticase soy agar count, demonstrating that the phenomenon observed was not death but rather injury. Presumptive evidence of heat-stimulated ribonucleic acid (RNA) degrada

A novel antifungal Pseudomonas fluorescens isolated from potato soils in Greenland.

A rhizobacterium with high antifungal activity was isolated from a potato field at Inneruulalik, South Greenland. Phylogenetic analysis based on multi locus sequence typing showed that the bacterium was affiliated with strains of Pseudomonas fluorescens. The bacterium, denoted as Pseudomonas fluorescens In5, inhibited in vitro a broad range of phytopathogenic fungi, and the antifungal activity increased with decreasing temperature. Microcosm experiments demonstrated that P. fluorescens In5 protected tomato seedlings from Rhizoctonia solani. Transposon mutagenesis showed that the major cause fo

Temperature-responsive sensing regulates biocontrol factor expression in Pseudomonas fluorescens CHA0.

In the plant-beneficial, root-colonizing strain Pseudomonas fluorescens CHA0, the Gac/Rsm signal transduction pathway positively regulates the synthesis of biocontrol factors (mostly antifungal secondary metabolites) and contributes to oxidative stress response via the stress sigma factor RpoS. The backbone of this pathway consists of the GacS/GacA two-component system, which activates the expression of three small regulatory RNAs (RsmX, RsmY, RsmZ) and thereby counters translational repression exerted by the RsmA and RsmE proteins on target mRNAs encoding biocontrol factors. We found that the

Type III secretion system diversity in the Pseudomonas fluorescens species complex.

Type III secretion systems (T3SSs) play important roles in mediating interactions between bacteria and eukaryotic hosts by delivering effectors into host cells, yet their genetic diversity and evolutionary dynamics among rhizosphere-associated members of Pseudomonas fluorescens species complex (PFSC) remain poorly understood. We conducted a genome-based evolutionary analysis of T3SSs across a global collection of PFSC strains to investigate their phylogenetic evolution and diversity. The 88 T3SS-carrying strains were assigned to seven PFSC subgroups and clustered into six phylogenetically dist
