Pseudomyxoma peritonei is a relatively rare and poorly understood condition in which mucus accumulates within the peritoneal cavity. The presence of cells in the mucin, either inflammatory or neoplastic, distinguishes it from simple acellular mucus ascites caused by mucinous spillage. There is widespread seeding of the peritoneal and omental surfaces with a heavy cancerous glaze. This is principally a complication of borderline or malignant neoplasm of the ovary and/or appendix. This paper describes two cases of previously healthy women who both presented with an acute abdomen, and were diagno

BACKGROUND: Pseudomyxoma peritonei is an unusual condition in which gelatinous fluid collections are associated with mucinous implants on the peritoneal surfaces and omentum. The pathological origin and ideal treatment of the condition are subjects of debate.
METHODS: An unrestricted Medline search over 1986-1997 was performed for pseudomyxoma peritonei.
RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: There is increasing evidence that pseudomyxoma peritonei is a neoplastic condition which usually arises from a primary adenoma or adenocarcinoma of the appendix. Reported series include a spectrum of pathological les

Pseudomyxoma peritonei results from implantation of malignant tumors or irritation from ruptured benign cysts. This disease is traditionally characterized by accumulation of mucinous ascites, relatively long survival period and absence of extraperitoneal metastases. Disease progression is difficult to predict because of the spectrum of underlying pathologic entities. Four unusual instances of pseudomyxoma peritonei are presented. An instance of the neoplasm confined to the splenic parenchyma suggests potential for hematogenous dissemination. The tumor can be limited to and extend along the ret

Pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP) is a rare neoplastic condition characterised by gelatinous ascites, which generally arise from mucin-producing appendiceal tumours. Presentation is variable but requires prompt recognition to ensure appropriate specialist management due to risk of malignancy.A male in his 40s presented with a 1-day history of sudden onset, non-migratory abdominal pain, worse in the right iliac fossa. He had no significant medical history nor known drug allergies. Examination revealed right iliac fossa peritonism and blood tests revealed raised inflammatory markers. CT scan showed a

Pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP) is a mucinous tumour of the appendix that spreads into the peritoneal cavity in the form of gelatinous deposits. The incidence of PMP is believed to be approximately 1-3 out of a million per year. Nonetheless, due to its indolent nature, it is usually discovered at an advanced stage and severely impacts quality of life. Curative treatment for PMP is complete cytoreductive surgery (CRS) with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC). An extensive literature review was conducted searching EMBASE, MEDLINE, PubMed, and Google Scholar databases for PMP in aims t

Pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP) is an uncommon clinical condition that typically originates from a perforated epithelial neoplasm of the appendix. The clinical presentation is variable, often with non-specific symptoms and is associated with abdominal distension in advanced cases. Whilst traditionally considered benign, it is apparent that PMP represents a spectrum of disease and, at best, should be considered a "border-line" malignancy. The condition is characterised by the development of mucinous ascites. Tumour cells and mucin accumulate at characteristic sites within the peritoneal cavity acc

Pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP) is a rare clinicopathologic syndrome characterized by progressive accumulation of mucinous ascites within the peritoneal cavity, most commonly arising from an appendiceal mucinous neoplasm. Diagnosis is frequently delayed because of nonspecific symptoms and variable radiographic findings. We present a case of high-grade PMP in a 41-year-old man whose initial presentation was notable for atypical endocrine and genitourinary symptoms, including progressive gynecomastia, ejaculatory dysfunction, pelvic pain, and hydrocele formation. Initial abdominal magnetic resonanc

BACKGROUND: Appendiceal mucinous neoplasms are routinely accompanied by peritoneal metastases at the time of diagnosis of the primary appendiceal tumor. In contrast, liver metastases and lymph node metastases are unusual.
METHODS: From an extensive database, patients with lymph node metastases identified at the time of primary appendiceal cancer resection were selected for special study. The clinical, treatment-related and histologic variables of this group of patients were statistically analyzed for their impact on overall survival.
RESULTS: From a prospectively maintained database of 685 p

A 53-year-old lady presented with post-menopausal bleeding (spotting) for two days and abdominal pain for three months. CT scan revealed bilateral adnexal mass and ascites; and CEA and CA19.9 was raised. Histopathology of the resected tissues revealed mucinous carcinoma of bilateral ovaries and colon with omental metastasis. Generally, pseudomyxoma peritonei arises from primary ovarian or appendiceal adenomas or adenocarcinomas. Keywords: Adenocarcinomas; ascites; metastases; mucinous carcinoma; pseudomyxoma peritonei.

Each year, about two per million individuals will be diagnosed with pseudomyxoma peritonei, a disease characterised by the intra-abdominal growth of neoplastic mucin-secreting cells on peritoneal surfaces. The distribution of the disease within the abdomen is not random but depends on physiological principles. Most cases derive from neoplasms of the appendix. In the past, the ovary was considered a common primary site. However, we now know that the ovary is only rarely the source of pseudomyxoma, and that lesions which would previously have been called "borderline mucinous tumours of the ovary

BACKGROUND: Mucoceles resulting from cystadenomas of the ovary are uncommon. Although rare, rupture of the mucoceles can occur without causing any abdominal issue. This report concerns an unusual and interesting case of the right ovary associated with liver, spleen and kidney cysts.
CASE PRESENTATION: A case of ruptured mucocele resulting from cystadenoma of the ovary occurred in a 63-year-old woman. The patient underwent x-ray, ultrasound and a CT scan. Localised pseudomyxoma peritonei associated with adenocarcinoma of the right ovary was diagnosed. The patient underwent resection of the ova

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: We analysed the clinical symptoms and signs of pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP), a rare syndrome affecting one to two persons per million annually. Presumably, patients with PMP would benefit from early diagnosis. This study was conducted to further characterise the manifestations of PMP.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We performed a retrospective chart review of a consecutive series of 82 PMP cases at the Helsinki University Central Hospital from June 1984 to September 2009. We then analysed the patients' characteristics, clinical manifestations, indications for surgery and preoperat

Many etiologies may cause sciatica, and intra-abdominal masses usually affect the lumbosacral plexus by local invasion or distal metastases. Lumbosacral plexopathy caused by compression of intra-abdominal tumors instead of invasion is rarely seen. A 67-year-old woman had a 3-month history of progressive neurogenic claudication, lumbago and left L5 radiculopathy with foot drop. Nocturia and progressive abdominal distension with voiding dysfunction were also noted. Imaging studies showed a huge pelvic mass with severe compression of the left lumbosacral trunk. There was no direct invasion of the

Mucoceles of the appendix and associated pseudomyxoma peritonei are a heterogeneous group comprising various histopathologic lesions with differing prognoses. Between 1983 and 1990, we treated eight patients with appendiceal mucocele, three cystadenomas and five cystadenocarcinomas, three of which had accompanying pseudomyxoma peritonei. All patients were more than 50 years of age. Women outnumbered men by seven to one. Preoperative diagnosis was acute appendicitis or appendiceal abscess in all instances of mucocele unaccompanied by pseudomyxoma peritonei. Ultrasound of the abdomen, together w

The authors present two cases of pseudomyxoma peritonei caused by a ruptured mucocele of the appendix and by ruptured mucinous cystadenoma of the ovary observed during the period from 1974 to 1981. It is demonstrated that the development of a generalized pseudomyxoma depends upon the rupture of mucocele or of mucinous cystadenoma or cystadenocarcinoma of the ovary with graft of the muciparous cells floating in the "jelly" on the peritoneum of neighbouring organs. Cause of recurrences which require repeated operations for intestinal obstruction, the prognosis is poor although other treatment is

Objective: To analyze the relationship between clinicopathologic characteristics of pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP) and its prognosis. Methods: Fifty-two cases of PMP collected from 2012 to 2017 at Beijing Shijitan Hospital, Capital Medical University were reviewed using the diagnostic criteria of WHO 2010. The histopathologic features, including original location, neural invasion and calcification were observed; and the relationship with prognosis was analyzed. Immunohistochemical staining for CK7, CK20 and CDX2 was performed on all cases. ER, PR, and p16 were additionally performed on those wit
