The Douglas-fir beetle, Dendroctonus pseudotsugae Hopkins, antiaggregation pheromone, 3-methylcyclohex-2-en-1-one (MCH), has been used operationally in western North America to protect high-risk, high-valued trees during outbreaks since the spring of 2000. The most commonly used formulation of MCH is a bubble capsule manufactured by several different companies. Bubble capsules are made of 2 layers of plastic film that breakdown very slowly under natural conditions requiring resource managers to remove them after treatment in some situations. In this study, a small bead formulation of MCH (Herc

Changes in concentrations of several endogenous phytohormones and metabolites were analyzed in the long shoots of nine genotypes of coastal Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco var. menziesii) at five developmental stages: (1) closed buds, (2) flushing buds, (3) rapidly elongating shoots, (4) growing shoots and (5) near full-length shoots during one growing season. When averaged across genotypes, indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) concentration was high at stages 1 and 3. The only pattern that correlated with cone productivity was the one that was unique to IAA, in which high concentratio

BACKGROUND: Single-nucleotide polymorphism markers (SNPs) have important applications in gene conservation, breeding, and fundamental genetics research. Our long-term goal is to develop routine approaches for SNP genotyping in forest trees. Ideally, these approaches would be inexpensive, able to accommodate a wide range of samples and SNPs, available through commercial providers, and produce high-quality SNP data.
RESULTS: Using targeted genotyping-by-sequencing (GBS), we developed SNP assays for two highly heterozygous tree species, Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) and radiata pine (Pinus

Mass attack by tree-killing bark beetles (Curculionidae: Scolytinae) brings about large chemical changes in host trees that can have important ecological consequences. For example, mountain pine beetle (Dendroctonus ponderosae Hopkins) attack increases emission of terpenes by lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta Dougl. ex Loud.), affecting foliage flammability with consequences for wildfires. In this study, we measured chemical changes to Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii var. glauca (Mirb.) Franco) foliage in response to attack by Douglas-fir beetles (Dendroctonus pseudotsugae Hopkins) as trees di

Coastal Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii spp. menziesii (Mirb.) Franco) occurs over a wide range of environmental conditions on Vancouver Island, British Columbia. Although ecological zones have been drawn, no formal spatial analysis of environmental limitations on tree growth has been carried out. Such an exercise is desirable to identify areas that may warrant intensive management and to evaluate the impacts of predicted climate change this century. We applied a physiologically based forest growth model, 3-PG (Physiological Principles Predicting Growth), to interpret and map current limita

Wildfires and bark beetles have historically interacted to create complex and resilient forests. However, recent record-breaking wildfires in western North America raise concerns that the large areas of injured and dead trees could facilitate increases in insect populations that respond to resource pulses. Populations of Douglas-fir beetle (Dendroctonus pseudotsugae), the primary mortality agent of Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii), often irrupt following fires due to the resultant ephemeral pulses of defensively compromised hosts. Other subcortical phloeophagous insects are also attracted t

Under climate change, the reduction of frost risk, onset of warm temperatures and depletion of soil moisture are all likely to occur earlier in the year in many temperate regions. The resilience of tree species will depend on their ability to track these changes in climate with shifts in phenology that lead to earlier growth initiation in the spring. Exposure to warm temperatures ('forcing') typically triggers growth initiation, but many trees also require exposure to cool temperatures ('chilling') while dormant to readily initiate growth in the spring. If warming increases forcing and decreas

While mining provides valuable metals and minerals to meet societal demands, it can cause environmental contamination from the residuals (i.e., tailings) of mining. Tailings are often acidic, laden with heavy metals, and lacking adequate nutrients and physical conditions for plant growth, precluding the establishment of plant cover to reduce the offsite movement of mining wastes. This paper describes a case study at the Formosa Mine in Douglas County, Oregon, where tailings were amended with a mixture of lime, biosolids, biochar, and microbial inoculum to facilitate establishment of Douglas-fi

α-Fe2O3 and Fe3O4 dispersed on high surface area (663 m2/g) Douglas fir biochar (BC) was prepared for fast nitrate and fluoride ion removal from water using magnetic separations. This biochar, made originally at 900 °C, was impregnated with FeCl3 and converted by pyrolysis at 600 °C to magnetic (494 m2/g) biochar (MBC). MBC and its precursor BC were characterized using SEM, SEM-EDX, STEM, SBET, PZC measurements, XRD analysis, and XPS. Dispersed α-Fe2O3 and Fe3O4 particles caused magnetization and generated most adsorption sites, causing more nitrate and fluoride uptake than BC. Both nitrate an

Insects are commonly found by Hawaii's quarantine inspectors on Christmas trees imported from the Pacific Northwest. To reduce the risk of importing yellowjacket (Vespula spp.) queens and other insects, an inspection and tree shaking certification program was begun in 1990. From 1993 to 2006, the annual percentage of shipped containers rated by Hawaii quarantine inspectors as moderately or highly infested with insects was significantly higher for manually shaken trees than for mechanically shaken trees. Between 1993 and 2001, 343 insect species in total were recovered from Christmas trees. Liv

Densification can partially resolve the logistical challenges encountered when large volumes of biomass are required for bioconversion processes to benefit from economies-of-scale. Despite the higher bulk density of pellets, their lower mechanical strength and sensitivity to moisture are still recurring issues hindering long term transportation and storage. In this study, we have evaluated the potential benefits of SO(2)-catalyzed steam treatment to achieve both the needed size reduction prior to pelletization while improving the stability of the produced pellets. This pretreatment substantial

The Douglas-fir beetle, Dendroctonus pseudotsugae Hopkins (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), antiaggregation pheromone, 3-methylcyclohex-2-en-1-one (MCH), has been used by natural resource managers and landowners to protect high-value, high-risk trees from Douglas-fir beetle infestation throughout the western United States since 2000. Labor is a major portion of the cost of MCH treatments. MCH is applied by walking through treatment areas and stapling the formulated pheromone in bubble capsules to trees and other objects on a regular grid pattern. Reducing the number of MCH release points and increa

Molybdenum (Mo) is a naturally-occurring trace element in drinking water. Most commonly, molybdate anions (MoO42-) are in well water and breast milk. In addition, it is used in medical image testing. Recently, the EPA classified Mo as a potential contaminant, as exposure can lead to health effects such as gout, hyperuricemia, and even lung cancer. We have assessed the sorptive removal of aqueous molybdate using Douglas fir biochar (DFBC) and a hybrid DFBC/Fe3O4 composite containing chemically-coprecipitated iron oxide (Fe3O4). Adsorption was studied at various: pH values, equilibrium times (5

During the exhumation of general Władysław Sikorski's corpse, a fragment of wood was found embedded in the left eye socket bone. The wood fragment was referred by the Institute of Forensic Research to the laboratory of Department of Forest and Wood Utilization, University of Agriculture in Krakow, where investigations were performed, aiming at determining the species of the wood. The fragment was cut into 20 microm thick microtome scraps of three anatomy sections: transverse, tangential and radial. The scraps were immersed in 99.8% ethyl alcohol for 24 hours and then for about 1 hour in xylene

Leaf gas exchange is the key driver of forest carbon uptake and directly determines forest carbon sink activity. Additionally, plants release a variety of biogenic volatile organic compounds (VOCs) acting as stress signals of trees. However, continuous hourly resolved measurements of leaf gas exchange and VOC emissions in tall tree canopies are challenging and remain scarce. To this end, we developed a complex in-situ leaf gas exchange measurement system with 24 cuvettes deployed on mature Fagus sylvatica L. (n = 3) and Pseudotsuga menziesii (MIRBEL) FRANCO (n = 3) individuals in a mixed tempe

Spring-flushing, over-wintered buds of Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco) produce new buds that may follow various developmental pathways. These include second flushing in early summer or dormancy before flushing during the following spring. Second flushing usually entails an initial release of apical dominance as some of the current-season upper lateral buds grow out. Four hypotheses concerning control of current bud outgrowth in spring-flushing shoots were tested: (1) apically derived auxin in the terminal spring-flushing shoot suppresses lateral bud outgrowth (second flushin

Douglas firs (Pseudotsuga menziesii [Mirb.] Franco) are suffering strongly from air pollution in western Europe. We studied the effect of low concentrations of ozone (200 micrograms per cubic meter during 3 days) and sulfur dioxide (53 micrograms per cubic meter during 28 days) on translocation of assimilates in 2 year old Douglas firs. The trees were exposed to the pollutants and afterward transferred to a growth chamber adapted to the use of (14)CO(2). Root/soil respiration was measured daily. The results showed a significant decrease of the (14)CO(2) root/soil respiration during the first 1

The resource heterogeneity hypothesis (RHH) is frequently cited in the ecological literature as an important mechanism for maintaining species diversity. The RHH has rarely been evaluated in the context of restoration ecology in which a commonly cited goal is to restore diversity. In this study we focused on the spatial heterogeneity of total inorganic nitrogen (TIN) following restoration treatments in a ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa)/Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) forest in western Montana, USA. Our objective was to evaluate relationships between understory species richness and TIN het

A major barrier to the commercialization of somatic embryogenesis technology in loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) is recalcitrance of some high-value crosses to initiate embryogenic tissue (ET) and continue early-stage somatic embryo growth. Developing initiation and multiplication media that resemble the seed environment has been shown to decrease this recalcitrance. Glutathione (GSH), glutathione disulfide (GSSG), ascorbic acid and dehydroascorbate analyses were performed weekly throughout the sequence of seed development for female gametophyte and zygotic embryo tissues to determine physiologi

Forest products were tested to see if they functioned as a barrier to nymphal Ixodes scapularis. These products could potentially be used to define a border between high density and low density tick zones on residential properties in Lyme disease endemic regions of North America. Common home and garden items were also tested. Three wood products effectively acted as barriers to nymphal I. scapularis: Alaska Yellow Cedar sawdust, Alaska Yellow Cedar woodchips, and cellulose. These three products were then weathered to determine how long they remained active. Cellulose and Alaska Yellow Cedar wo
