Psoralea corylifolia Linn.-"Kushtanashini".

Plants have been the basis of many traditional medicines throughout the world for thousands of years and continue to provide new remedies to mankind. Plants have been one of the important sources of medicines since the beginning of human civilization. The recent resurgence of plant remedies resulted from several factors, such as effectiveness of plant medicines and lesser side effects compared with modern medicines. Psoralea corylifolia, commonly known as babchi, is a popular herb, which has since long been used in traditional Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine for its magical effects to cure vari

Psoralea corylifolia extract ameliorates experimental osteoporosis in ovariectomized rats.

We evaluated the protective effect of Psoralea corylifolia L. (PCL) extract on the ovariectomized (OVX) rat model. The biochemical markers of bone turnover, calcium metabolism, and calcium balance were examined. PCL extract (25 mg or 50 mg/kg body weight/day) was orally administrated to OVX rats for 3 months. PCL extract did not alter weight gain or uterus weight in OVX rats. PCL extract significantly increased serum Ca (calcium) levels (p < 0.05, vs. OVX group) as well as decreased urinary Ca excretion (p < 0.05 vs. OVX group) in OVX rats. The upregulation of serum osteocalcin level by ovarie

Bakuchiol Contributes to the Hepatotoxicity of Psoralea corylifolia in Rats.

Psoralea corylifolia L. (Fructus Psoraleae) is widely used in Asia, but there are concerns about hepatotoxicity caused by constituents such as psoralens and bakukiol. Bakuchiol (BAK) has antiinflammatory, antipyretic, antibacterial antiviral, anticancer, and estrogenic activity but appears to be hepatotoxic in in vitro tests. This study investigated the hepatotoxicity in vivo in rats. Using intragastrically administered bakuchiol at doses of 52.5 and 262.5 mg/kg for 6 weeks. Bodyweight, relative liver weight, biochemical indicators, histopathology, mRNA expression of CYP7A1, HMG-CoA reductase,

Polysaccharides from Psoralea corylifolia seeds suppress osteoclastogenesis and alleviate osteoporosis.

Psoralea corylifolia seeds, traditionally used in East Asia for their bone-strengthening properties, contain polysaccharides as one of their main components. However, the anti-osteoporotic potential of these polysaccharides remains underexplored. This study investigated the effects of polysaccharides extracted from P. corylifolia seeds (PCEP) on osteoclast differentiation and bone loss. PCEP effectively inhibited receptor activator of NF-κB ligand (RANKL)-induced osteoclast differentiation. Chemical composition analysis revealed that PCEP is predominantly composed of glucose and galactose, alo

Psoralea corylifolia protects against testicular torsion/detorsion-induced ischemia/reperfusion injury.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: The pathophysiology of testicular torsion-detorsion is ischemia-reperfusion injury of the testis. In the course of testicular ischemia and reperfusion, overgeneration of reactive oxygen species is a major initiating component of the testicular spermatogenic injury. Reactive oxygen species regulate many genes whose expression affects cell-cycle regulation, cell proliferation, and apoptosis. The transcription factor cAMP-responsive element modulator-τ (CREMτ) plays an essential role in spermatogenesis. Psoralea corylifolia, a medicinal herb with anti-oxidative act
