First report of Chorioptes texanus (Acari: Psoroptidae) in Argentina.

In Argentina it has historically been assumed that Chorioptes bovis is the only species involved in clinical cases of bovine chorioptic mange. The aim of this communication is to present the first formal report based on morphometric studies of C. texanus in Argentina. Mange mites were collected through skin scrapings of areas with superficial dermatitis on adult dairy cows from three dairy farms located in Santa Fe, Entre Ríos and Córdoba provinces (Argentina). Clinical lesions were characterized by dermatitis located at the base of the tail and ischiorectal fossa, pruritus with hyperkeratosis

Lipid ingestion from sheep epidermis by Psoroptes ovis (Acari: Psoroptidae).

Skin biopsies from three groups of sheep infested with Psoroptes ovis were cryofixed in liquid nitrogen to preserve outer epidermis with its lipid. From one group of five sheep (Group A), biopsies were taken from relatively healthy skin near the edge of scab lesions where mites had congregated. Frozen vertical sections from these biopsies were stained with Oil Red O and haematoxylin before mounting. Red lipid globules were plentiful within the body cavity of sectioned mites, but ingested lipid could not be distinguished from endogenous mite body stores by this technique. In a second group of f

Antigenic characterization of Psoroptes spp. (Acari: Psoroptidae) mites from different hosts.

Immunoblotting with defined antigens and antisera revealed extensive and nearly complete antigenic cross-reactivity between Psoroptes spp. mites from a bighorn sheep, a mule deer, a cow, and a rabbit. Antigenic differences were not detected between mites from the sympatric bighorn sheep and mule deer. However, minor antigenic differences between mites from the cow and rabbit suggested that these mites were distinct from each other, as well as from the mites from the bighorn sheep and mule deer. These results are consistent with earlier morphologic studies of these populations of mites and prov

Blackbuck antelope (Antilope cervicapra), a new host for Psoroptes cuniculi (Acari: Psoroptidae).

Information was requested on the cause of extensive lesions and death of a blackbuck antelope (Antilope cervicapra). Psoroptes cuniculi, the ear mite of domestic rabbits, was identified as the cause of the lesions. Death of the antelope was attributed to a secondary bacterial infection. This is the first report of P. cuniculi on blackbuck antelope. The potential impact of these mites on blackbuck antelope and other exotics in Texas is unknown.

Cross-mating studies with Psoroptes ovis (hering) and Psoroptes cuniculi delafond (Acarina: psoroptidae).

Reciprocal cross-matings of Psoroptes ovis and P. cuniculi occurred and produced viable offspring through the F2 generation. Hybrids of these crosses were infective to both rabbits and cattle. Mean lengths of the male l4 setae of the parental species differed significantly from each other as well as from those of the hybrid males. These data show that P. ovis and P. cuniculi are not reproductively isolated. Because viable, fertile hybrids are produced, cross-matings of P. ovis and P. cuniculi are not suitable as a suppression method of cattle scabies.

A physiological and biochemical model for digestion in the ectoparasitic mite, Psoroptes ovis (Acari: Psoroptidae).

Mites are an important group of arthropod pests affecting crops, animals and humans. Despite this, detailed physiological studies on these organisms remain sparse due largely to their small size. Unifying models are required to draw together the diverse information from studies on different groups and species. This paper describes a model for digestion in the parasitic mite, Psoroptes ovis, the causative agent of psoroptic mange or sheep scab disease. The limited information about this species is supplemented with data from other acarines, especially house dust mites and ticks. We review the r

Ultrastructure of the alimentary canal of the sheep scab mite, Psoroptes ovis (Acari: Psoroptidae).

The mite Psoroptes ovis causes sheep scab disease in flocks throughout much of the world. A serious impediment to the development of novel control measures for this mite is our inability to produce in vitro colonies of the mite. Here, we describe the alimentary canal of the mite with the particular aim of determining what it feeds on, as part of a longer term goal, to develop in vitro culture techniques for P. ovis. The alimentary canal of P. ovis consists of a cuticle-lined foregut and hindgut separated by a microvilli-lined midgut. The foregut is divided into a pre-oral cavity and a muscular

Population identification and divergence threshold in Psoroptidae based on ribosomal ITS2 and mitochondrial COI genes.

Psoroptidae mites are a type of small mites with a wide range of hosts. The proliferation of Psoroptidae mites could cause symptoms such as severe itching, atopic dermatitis, and hair loss in infected animals. If severely infected, death can also occur. The morphological classification and identification of Psoroptidae mites is problematic due to the overlapping geographical distribution. In addition, there is no divergence threshold for molecular classification and identification. To solve this problem, gDNA was extracted from individual Psoroptes and Otodectes mites (China) for amplification

Ultrastructural morphology of the male and female genital tracts of Psoroptes spp. (Acari: Astigmata: Psoroptidae).

The structure of the male and female genital systems of the astigmatid mite Psoroptes ovis (Hering) is described. The male genital system is composed of a paired testis, fused at its proximal part, two vasa deferentia, an ejaculatory duct, into which a single accessory gland opens, and a copulatory organ. The testis is characterized by a peripheric syncytial cell surrounding spermatogonia, spermatocytes, spermatids and spermatozoa which are distributed regularly in the gonad according to the sequence of spermatogenesis. The female genital system consists of a copulatory pore (the bursa copulat

Comparison of cryofixation methods for skin biopsies from sheep infested with Psoroptes ovis (Acari: Psoroptidae).

Two methods of cryofixing skin samples from sheep infested with Psoroptes ovis were compared. In one method the skin biopsy was placed in a capped vial before immersion, while the other allowed direct contact with liquid nitrogen. No statistically significant differences were found between the cryofixation methods with regard to location of P. ovis sections or engaged mouthparts. Direct contact with liquid nitrogen is recommended as the preferred method for cryofixing epidermal feeding ectoparasites on skin samples.

Otodectes cynotis (Acari: Psoroptidae): examination of survival off-the-host under natural and laboratory conditions.

The biological and environmental factors affecting survival off-the-host of Otodectes cynotis (Acari: Psoroptidae) ear mites were investigated under natural and laboratory conditions. From November 2000 to November 2002 mites were collected monthly from cats and divided into four groups according to sex and stage. In laboratory conditions, the mites were placed in an incubator with a steady 95% relative humidity (r.h.), a 10 degrees C. All the plates were examined by stereomicroscopy every 24 h until all the mites had died. The data were analysed statistically by multiple linear regression and

Efficacy of ivermectin in a controlled release formulation against Psoroptes ovis (Hering, 1838) gervais, 1841 (Acari: Psoroptidae) on sheep.

Three trials including 42 sheep were conducted in Brazil or Germany to evaluate the therapeutic (two trials) and prophylactic (one trial) efficacy of an ivermectin controlled release capsule (CRC) against Psoroptes ovis infestation. In one therapeutic trial naturally infested sheep were used while in the other trials infestations were experimentally induced. In each trial half of the animals were treated on Day 0 with one ivermectin controlled release capsule that delivers ivermectin at a rate of 1.6 mg/day for approximately 100 days, that is 20 mcg/kg/day to a 80 kg animal, while the other ha

Raillietia caprae (Acari: Raillietidae) and Psoroptes ovis (Acari: Psoroptidae) in the ears of goats in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Southeast Brazil.

Ear canals of 145 domestic goats including the breeds Saanen, Toggenburg, Anglobian, Alpine, Moxoto (native) and crossbred goats from 10 smallholder farms were examined by flushing for the presence of ear mites. Prevalence of Raillietia caprae Quintero, Bassols and Acevedo, 1980 was much more higher than Psoroptes ovis (Hering, 1838) in the studied area, respectively 62% (90/145) and 4% (6/145). The youngest animal parasitized was eight months old and the oldest was 10 years old. Subclinical otitis is a common feature of infestation by both species but increase of wax and the presence of pus w

Cloning and sequence analysis of a cDNA encoding Pso o II, a mite group II allergen of the sheep scab mite (Acari: Psoroptidae).

Psoroptes ovis (Hering), the sheep scab mite, is responsible for psoroptic scabies of cattle and sheep. Reverse translation of 30 N-terminal amino acids of the major P. ovis allergen, previously chosen as a candidate immunogen and identified as a 16 kDa protein yielded a degenerate sequence used to design oligodeoxynucleotide polymerase chain reaction (PCR) primers. Use of the PCR primers with a P. ovis cDNA library succeeded in amplification of a 90 bp cDNA gene fragment that was cloned, sequenced, and used to select unique sequencing/PCR primers. Primer walking generated overlapping subclone
