Psychiatric comorbidity among hospitalized AIDS patients vs. non-AIDS patients referred for psychiatric consultation.

Data were collected on 3,420 psychiatric consultations from July 1, 1989, to January 1, 1994, of which 675 were for patients identified as infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Comparisons of psychiatric comorbidity among persons with AIDS (PWAs), HIV+ asymptomatic patients, and non-HIV patients were made. Dementia was a significantly frequent comorbid diagnosis among the referred PWAs compared with the general consultation population and was related to older age. Psychiatric comorbidity among the referred HIV+ asymptomatic patients more closely resembled the general consultati

Psychiatric considerations in children and adolescents with HIV/AIDS.

The psychosocial impact of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) disease has been recognized since the beginning of the epidemic for affected adults, but there has been less focus on the impact of HIV on young people. Among HIV-positive (HIV+) adults, high levels of distress, psychiatric symptoms, and their associations with worse health outcomes were recognized early in the epidemic. Subsequently, many studies have focused on understanding the prevalence of psychiatric symptoms among HIV+ adults and on identifying effective treatments for these symptoms. Fewer studies have examined these symptom

Psychiatric and neurophysiological predictors of obesity in HIV/AIDS.

The objective of the study was to identify predictors of obesity. One hundred eleven nonobese and 48 obese HIV-1 seropositive patients provided information on medical history and other characteristics. They were then asked to detect the passage of 2-s time intervals while the contingent negative variation (CNV) was recorded. Obese patients were healthier, more likely to be receiving Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy, and less likely to be substance dependent. Obese patients also exhibited a greater CNV slope and responded prematurely. A path model suggested that CD4+count and protease inhib

Treatment of psychiatric disorders in children and adolescents with HIV/AIDS.

We could not have predicted that HIV/AIDS would become one of our greatest public health challenges worldwide when the first cases were identified in the 1980s. More than 22 million people have died from the disease, and HIV is now the seventh-leading cause of death in the United States among 15- to 24-year-olds. At the beginning of this pandemic, most HIV infections of youth were acquired congenitally. Prenatal screening of pregnant women, early detection, and antiretroviral therapies have reduced mother-to-child transmission. Children born with HIV infections are now young adults living with

[Psychiatric disorders and sensory deprivation in AIDS. Case report].

In AIDS there are several opportunistic infections that may occur. Some of them can lead to blindness (for example toxoplasmosis, CMV). It is known that psychiatric disorders can also occur in AIDS. Both situations can take place at the same time. In that case we face the diagnostic problem: Are psychiatric disorders a result of the sensoric deprivation connected with sudden blindness or organic changes in the brain caused by HIV? In our article we described the case of a 37 years old woman who had that kind of symptoms.

AIDS patients compared with others seen in psychiatric consultation.

To identify similarities and differences between AIDS patients and non-AIDS patients, all psychiatric consultations done in one year in a large voluntary general hospital were reviewed. A total of 93 consultations were done on 67 AIDS patients and 138 consultations were done on 121 comparably aged patients without AIDS. The most common AIDS risk factor was intravenous drug use. The AIDS patients were more likely to be Hispanic and male than were the non-AIDS patients. The AIDS group was also more likely to have a diagnosis of organic mental disorder, particularly dementia. There were no other

To describe and evaluate the frequency of neurological and psychiatric manifestations in African patients with AIDS, 93 in patients at the National Hospital Center, Bangui, were chosen according to the WHO clinical definition of AIDS and were confirmed to be HIV-1 positive (92/93) or HIV-2 positive (1/93) by Western blot. Patients were given both neurologic and psychiatric examinations. Cortico-spinal fluid (CSF) analysis was performed in case of neuro-psychiatric signs. 11 patients presented neurologic symptoms: 5 had focal processes associated in 2 cases with deep coma, 4 had cryptococcal me

Similarities of psychiatric disorders of AIDS and syphilis: history repeats itself.

There are marked similarities in the psychiatric disorders associated with autoimmune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) and syphilis (paresis). Although depression is most common, the psychiatric disorders in both conditions include the entire range of clinical syndromes that can simulate any type of mental disorder, functional or organic. The underlying neuropathology and methods of transmission are also similar. The author also notes that the social and moral attitudes toward patients with AIDS and syphilis are alike, including moral and religious prohibitions against the use of condoms.

Drug abuse, psychiatric disorders, and AIDS. Dual and triple diagnosis.

Substance abuse and psychiatric disorders commonly occur together. This form of dual diagnosis is notable because it complicates assessment and makes treatment more difficult for both psychiatric and drug abuse problems. Drugs can cause psychiatric disorders and can also be used as an attempt to "cure" them by self-medication. The spread of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) among drug users has added a third potential clinical problem, that of the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, to the difficulties already presented by drug abuse and psychiatric disorders. Patients with this triple di

Mood and psychiatric disturbance in HIV and AIDS: changes over time.

A sample of 26 HIV seronegative, 59 HIV seropositive asymptomatic and 7 HIV seropositive symptomatic homosexual and bisexual men were assessed over two visits, a mean of 11 months apart, using the BDI, STAI, and CIS. Significant differences emerged between the symptomatic group and the other two groups. Past psychiatric history and the somatic items in the assessments accounted for some of these differences. The seropositive asymptomatic and the seronegative groups did not differ on any of the mood or psychiatric assessments, suggesting minimal effect on psychological well-being of seroconvers

The psychiatric disorders related with HIV infection can take various and complex forms. One case of Hypomania in a drug abuser patient with HIV + is reported, and it is suggested that this virus may produce symptomatology indistinguishable from the functional disorders.

[Psychiatric morbidity in patients hospitalized for AIDS: experiences in a Quebec hospital].

Neuropsychiatric complications in AIDS patients are common and have been reported in many recent articles. The author reviewed the medical charts of 80 patients admitted for AIDS between April 1984 and April 1988 to determine the frequency and nature of psychiatric complications in these patients and to compare these with recent reports made by other authors. The most frequent complications requiring psychiatric intervention seem to be organic mental disorders and adjustment disorders. Practical conclusions are drawn.

Requests for psychiatric consultation concerning 22 patients with AIDS and ARC.

Psychiatric consultation was requested for 22 of 150 patients with the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) or AIDS-related complex (ARC) admitted to St Vincent's Hospital, Sydney. The mean age of the patients was 35 years and all were homosexual or bisexual men. Ten patients had an organic brain syndrome: six as a result of cerebral opportunistic infection, two due to metabolic or iatrogenic causes and two apparently due to the direct neurotropic effects of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Hallucinations and delusions were documented in five patients, of whom two had symptoms that

A Focus Group Study of the Views of Persons with a History of Psychiatric Illness about Psychiatric Medical Aid in Dying.

BACKGROUND: Medical aid in dying (MAID) is legal in a number of countries, including some states in the U.S. While MAID is only permitted for terminal illnesses in the U.S., some other countries allow it for persons with psychiatric illness. Psychiatric MAID, however, raises unique ethical concerns, especially related to its effects on mental illness stigma and on how persons with psychiatric illnesses would come to feel about treatment and suicide. To explore those concerns, we conducted several focus groups with persons with lived experience of mental illness. METHODS: We conducted three vi

Psychiatric illnesses in patients with HIV infection and AIDS referred to the liaison psychiatrist.

All referrals made to the liaison psychiatric service for HIV and AIDS patients over one year were reviewed. ICD-9 and CDC diagnoses were applied to each case at presentation. Sixty HIV-positive patients were assessed, of whom 35 had affective disorder, which was significantly associated with CDC group IV disease (AIDS). Adjustment reaction was seen in nine patients, paranoid states in six, dementia in four, personality changes in four and paranoid schizophrenia in two. CT scans of the brain were performed on 23 of the patients: 17 of these showed abnormalities. The proportion of registered AI

Psychiatric problems of AIDS inpatients at the New York Hospital: preliminary report.

A retrospective review of the charts of 52 patients with acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) in the New York Hospital was conducted to determine the prevalence of recorded psychiatric complications and the use of psychiatric consultation. Neuropsychiatric complications were found to be pervasive clinical features in AIDS patients hospitalized during acute illness. Mood disturbance was identified in an overwhelming majority of the patients (82.7 percent), and signs of organic mental syndrome (DSM III) were noted in 65.4 percent; references to neuropsychiatric complications appeared in ev
