Psychiatric patients at the emergency department: factors associated with length of stay and likelihood of hospitalization.

Emergency department (ED) care for psychiatric patients is currently understudied despite being highly utilized. Therefore, we aimed to analyze psychiatric patients' length of stay (LOS) and LOS-related factors at the ED and to investigate and quantify the likelihood of being hospitalized after an emergency psychiatric evaluation. Charts of 408 individuals who sought help at the ED were retrospectively assessed to identify patients' sociodemographic and clinical data upon ED admission and discharge. All interventions performed at the ED (e.g., medications, hospitalization, clinical advice at d

Do psychiatric departments in general hospitals have an impact on the physical health of mental patients?

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Recent literature has increased awareness of the physical health problems that affect mental-health patients. The close association of psychiatric departments with other medical departments can lead to improved communication and support between all medical specialties. This review assesses the impact these developments have on the physical health of individuals with psychiatric disorders. RECENT FINDINGS: The current literature shows that mentally ill individuals have increased physical illness comorbidity. They do not regularly attend screening programmes or follow-up appo

Characteristics of drug overdose suicide attempts presenting to the psychiatric emergency department of Beijing Anding Hospital.

BACKGROUND: Overdose-related suicide attempts represent a significant portion of self-harm presentations in the psychiatric emergency department (ED). Identifying specific patient characteristics associated with these attempts holds promise for pinpointing drug classes with elevated risk and paving the way for tailored suicide prevention interventions. This study aims to examine the demographic profiles of ED patients who had experienced overdose-related suicide attempts. METHODS: This retrospective study was conducted at Beijing Anding Hospital, Capital Medical University, from January 2020

Racial Disparities in the Use of Physical Restraints and Intramuscular Medications for Patients Awaiting Psychiatric Hospitalization in the Emergency Department.

BACKGROUND: Racial disparities within health care practices have drawn increasing attention. In psychiatric emergencies, patients may exhibit severe agitation necessitating the application of physical restraints and administration of intramuscular medications to ensure patient and staff safety and reduce acute symptoms. While previous studies have explored racial disparities in these interventions within the general emergency department (ED) settings, there remains a paucity of data about their use specifically in patients awaiting psychiatric hospitalization in the ED. OBJECTIVE: We investig

[Risk of incarceration of persons undergoing psychiatric care. A retrospective longitudinal study on the French department of Oise using information from a psychiatric hospital discharge database].

INTRODUCTION: Compared to the general population, persons with mental disorders are overrepresented in prison. In a study carried out in Picardy (northern France) in 2017, a quarter of those entering prison had had contact with a psychiatric service prior to their incarceration. Since to our knowledge no work on this subject has been published in France, we conducted a retrospective study, the main objective of which was to propose an estimate measure of incarceration likelihood in people with mental disorders. METHODS: Using data from a psychiatric hospital discharge database (Recueil d'info

Evaluation of 294 psychiatric consultations involving in-patients above 70 years of age in somatic departments in a university hospital.

The integrated geropsychiatric service of the Psychiatric Department of the University Hospital in Linköping consists of an observation ward, a day unit and an out-patient unit. One of the main tasks of the last-mentioned unit is to provide geropsychiatric consultations for in-patients in the non-psychiatric departments of the hospital. During the first 2 years from October 1982 to October 1984 300 consultations were performed. The consultations included registration of social, medical and psychiatric data, a psychiatric examination, discussions with the staff and a psychiatric report. Out of
