Psychoacoustic classification of persistent tinnitus.

INTRODUCTION: Tinnitus is a difficult to treat symptom, with different responses in patients. It is classified in different ways, according to its origin and associated diseases. OBJECTIVE: to propose a single and measurable classification of persistent tinnitus, through its perception as sounds of nature or of daily life and its comparison with pure tone or noise, of high or low pitch, presented to the patient by audiometer sound. METHODS: A total of 110 adult patients, of both genders, treated at the Tinnitus Outpatient Clinic, were enrolled according to the inclusion and exclusion criteri

A psychoacoustic test for misophonia assessment.

Misophonia is a condition where a strong arousal response is triggered when hearing specific human generated sounds, like chewing, and/or repetitive tapping noises, like pen clicking. It is diagnosed with clinical interviews and questionnaires since no psychoacoustic tools exist to assess its presence. The present study was aimed at developing and testing a new assessment tool for misophonia. The method was inspired by an approach we have recently developed for hyperacusis. It consisted of presenting subjects (n = 253) with misophonic, pleasant, and unpleasant sounds in an online experiment. T

Psychoacoustical tuning curves in audiology.

The correlation between classic masking patterns and psychoacoustical tuning curves is discussed quantitatively. A simplified method to measure such tuning curves in clinical use is described. They are shown to be insensitive to the frequency dependence of the hearing loss. Tuning curve data of six different groups including normal and hard-or-hearing observers are given: normal hearing, conductive hearing loss, degenerative hearing loss, noise-induced hearing loss, otosclerosis and Menière's disease. The resulting tuning curve data indicate that the frequency resolving power of the four group

Psychoacoustics and Neurophysiological Alterations after 30-36 Hours of Sleep Deprivation.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Sleep deprivation (SD) may result in perceptual and cognitive alterations in healthy subjects. Our objective was to compare whether psychoacoustics and neurophysiological variables in healthy subjects were altered after SD of 30-36 h. METHOD: We examined 22 subjects by means of several psychoacoustics tests, P300 and mismatch negativity (MMN) recordings, and brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEP) before and after 30-36 h of SD. RESULTS: In the psychoacoustics tests, we found that after SD, difficulties were experienced by the left ear in the discrimination of words i

Clinical psychoacoustics in Alzheimer's disease central auditory processing disorders and speech deterioration.

BACKGROUND: Difficulty in speech understanding in the presence of background noise or competing auditory signals is typically present in central auditory processing disorders. These disorders may be diagnosed in Alzheimer's disease as a result of degeneration in the central auditory system. In addition perception and processing of speech may be affected. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A MEDLINE research was conducted in order to answer the question whether there is a central auditory processing disorder involved in Alzheimer's disease. A second question to be investigated was what, if any is the connec

Principles and Methods for Psychoacoustic Evaluation of Tinnitus.

Tinnitus, the perception of sound in the absence of a physical sound in the environment, is highly heterogeneous. It varies in its etiology, characteristics, and impact on an individual's life. The sound is commonly described as "ringing," "buzzing," "crickets," "hissing," "humming." Tinnitus can be acute or chronic, mild or disabling. It can be perceived unilaterally or, more commonly, bilaterally. The sound and its location differ from person to person and fluctuate in the same individual over a certain period of time. This heterogeneity in characterization has important implications for res

[Psychoacoustic tuning in normal and pathological ears].

Since simplified methods have been generated to measure psychoacoustic tuning curves (PTC), they have proved to be useful in clinical workup. Nevertheless, further research is necessary for high level tuning. In the present study PTCs have been generated utilizing a discrete simultaneous masking tone-on-tone paradigm. Thresholds were determined using an adaptive up-down transformed procedure, thus obtaining normative data. The experimental groups allowed frequency-independent, mild to moderate hearing loss, in order to minimize such variable. Results indicate that PTCs were normal in 8 subject

Psychoacoustic consequences of compression in the peripheral auditory system.

Input-output functions on the basilar membrane of the cochlea show a strong compressive nonlinearity at midrange levels for frequencies close to the characteristic frequency of a given place. This article shows how many different phenomena can be explained as consequences of this nonlinearity, including the "excess" masking produced when 2 nonsimultaneous maskers are combined, the nonlinear growth of forward masking with masker level, the influence of component phase on the effectiveness of complex forward maskers, changes in the ability to detect increments and decrements with level, temporal

Quantifying psychoacoustic tuning curves for clinical use.

Psychoacoustic tuning curves (PTCs) were obtained in a number of normal-hearing and hearing-impaired subjects using a simultaneous tone-on-tone masking technique. PTCs at three different centre frequencies (500, 1,000 and 2,000 Hz) were studied. In order to estimate the degree of frequency selectivity of the inner ear, an algorithm for quantification of PTCs was constructed. The method of linear regression was used to calculate the slopes of the linearized curves. Three different parameters of the curve, the low and high frequency slope and the height of the curve, were calculated using comput

Cortical auditory disorders: clinical and psychoacoustic features.

The symptoms of two patients with bilateral cortical auditory lesions evolved from cortical deafness to other auditory syndromes: generalised auditory agnosia, amusia and/or pure word deafness, and a residual impairment of temporal sequencing. On investigation, both had dysacusis, absent middle latency evoked responses, acoustic errors in sound recognition and matching, inconsistent auditory behaviours, and similarly disturbed psychoacoustic discrimination tasks. These findings indicate that the different clinical syndromes caused by cortical auditory lesions form a spectrum of related auditor

Perceiving temporal rhythms in Sahelian soundscapes of Senegal: A pilot interdisciplinary study bridging psychoacoustics, ecology, and anthropologya).

At the intersection of ecological, psychoacoustic, and anthropological perspectives, this study examines how listeners living in Senegal's Sahelian region perceive seasonal and diurnal patterns in local soundscapes. Field recordings representing rainy and dry seasons, as well as different times of day, were first characterized using ecoacoustic analyses that revealed differences in spectro-temporal modulations. The recordings were then presented to two groups: Senegalese pastoralists (Peul herders) living in the Ferlo (n = 9) and a French control group with no prior exposure to the region (n =

Comparing Tinnitus Tuning Curves and Psychoacoustic Tuning Curves.

Tinnitus masking patterns have long been known to differ from those used for masking external sound. In the present study, we compared the shape of tinnitus tuning curves (TTCs) to psychophysical tuning curves (PTCs), the latter using as a target, an external sound that mimics the tinnitus characteristics. A secondary goal was to compare sound levels required to mask tinnitus to those required to mask tinnitus-mimicking sounds. The TTC, PTC, audiometric thresholds, tinnitus pitch, and level matching results of 32 tinnitus patients were analyzed. Narrowband noise maskers were used for both PTC

Electrophysiological correlates and psychoacoustic characteristics of hearing-motion synaesthesia.

People with hearing-motion synaesthesia experience sounds from moving or changing (e.g. flickering) visual stimuli. This phenomenon may be one of the most common forms of synaesthesia but it has rarely been studied and there are no studies of its neural basis. We screened for this in a sample of 200+ individuals, and estimated a prevalence of 4.2%. We also document its characteristics: it tends to be induced by physically moving stimuli (more so than static stimuli which imply motion or trigger illusory motion); and the psychoacoustic features are simple (e.g. "whooshing") with some systematic

Frequency selectivity and psychoacoustic tuning curves in old age.

Frequency selectivity represents an important contributory factor in the understanding of human speech. It refers to the ability of the ear to discriminate between two simultaneously occurring sounds of different spectral composition. The capabilities of frequency selection, time pattern analysis, and information processing can be determined generally only by speech audiometry. Schorn and co-workers (1977) published a simplified method for audiological investigations whereby results obtained at two different frequency values are sufficient. The test tone frequencies of 0.5 and 4 kHz were selec

Contribution of psychoacoustics and neuroaudiology in revealing correlation of mental disorders with central auditory processing disorders.

BACKGROUND: Psychoacoustics is a fascinating developing field concerned with the evaluation of the hearing sensation as an outcome of a sound or speech stimulus. Neuroaudiology with electrophysiologic testing, records the electrical activity of the auditory pathways, extending from the 8th cranial nerve up to the cortical auditory centers as a result of external auditory stimuli. Central Auditory Processing Disorders may co-exist with mental disorders and complicate diagnosis and outcome. DESIGN: A MEDLINE search was conducted to search for papers concerning the association between Central Aud
