This study was undertaken to demonstrate how psychoanalysis can shed new light on a much studied life history. Clara's emotional life knew a sequence of losses and "prohibited" intimate relationships that created grave loyalty, identity, and identificatory conflicts for her. Since her early childhood, when her father forced her to give up her mother, she had been forced into a choice between the love objects most dear to her and the one on whom she depended for her emotional survival. This resulted in her later repetition compulsion to maneuver herself into the same conflict of loyalty and in

Repetition of experience endured by the first generation has frequently been observed in descendants of Holocaust survivors. Such repetitions are associated with an erosion of the ability, in the area of the trauma, to distinguish more or less reliably between external and internal reality. This in turn results from the defensive need, in the affected families, to dissociate from such extreme traumatic experiences. Clinical material is presented to show that, at a certain phase in psychoanalytic work with patients belonging to subsequent generations, interpretive activity may need to be tempor

Psychoanalytic interpretation is normally understood as a sequence of two utterances: the analyst gives an interpretation and the patient responds to it. This paper suggests that, in the interpretative sequence, there is also a third utterance where psychoanalytic work takes place. This third interpretative turn involves the analyst's action after the patient's response to the interpretation. Using conversation analysis as method in the examination of audio-recorded psychoanalytic sessions, the paper will explicate the psychoanalytic work that gets done in third interpretative turns. This paper rescues Ernest Jones's largely-unknown book, 'The Elements of Figure Skating' (1931/1952), from relative obscurity and argues for its place in the psychoanalytic literature. In the first section, the authors situate Jones's passion for figure skating by turning to various historical and biographical sources, and to personal correspondence with Jones's son, Mervyn Jones. In the second section, they offer the first textual reading of Jones and skating within a psychoanalytic framework. This approach, they argue, is long overdue since Jones explicitly claimed that the 'Elements' was mo

The psychoanalytic unconscious is a concept with multiple meanings. Its first, positivist interpretation opens the door to a psychological debate with the neurosciences on the nature of the psyche, provided that the differences in methods and languages are respected. The second, hermeneutic interpretation views the unconscious as meaning to be interpreted or a narrative to be coconstructed. The third, which is emphasized here, offers a concrete definition of the unconscious within and through the pragmatics of psychoanalytic communication, in the here and now of the encounter. It is from this

In the last decades one can perceive a striking parallelism between the shifting perspective of leading representatives of empirical dream research concerning their conceptualization of dreaming and the paradigm shift within clinically based psychoanalytic metapsychology with respect to its theory on the significance of dreaming. In metapsychology, dreaming becomes more and more a central metaphor of mental functioning in general. The theories of Klein, Bion, and Matte-Blanco can be considered as milestones of this paradigm shift. In empirical dream research, the competing theories of Hobson a

This paper examines dreams that become landmarks in analytic work, opening new pathways for understanding a patient's internal world. Through the analysis of a young patient whose sessions oscillated between despair, omnipotence, and intense claustrophobic anxieties, it shows how dreams provided a shared space for the development of imaginative conjectures. A central dream-structured as a film perceived from multiple points of view-revealed the patient's unstable contact-barrier and her confusion between psychotic and non-psychotic modes of experience. The paper shows how this dream provided a

The paper delves into the dynamic interplay between interpretation and conversation within the frame of post-Bionian field theory. It highlights the crucial task of discerning whether the emotional atmosphere, the quality of the therapeutic bond, or the "basic assumption" that is active in the analytic dyad foster or hinder psychic growth. It underscores the significance of "becoming" and emotional resonance, as elucidated by Bion's concept of "at-one-ment," over mere intellectual accord and factual knowledge. The pivotal moment of interpretation hinges more on the analyst's "silent" receptivi

Adolescent hostility, resentment, blame, and reproach are dynamically determined and serve important defensive, alloplastic, and restitutional aims. The author examines how these negative affects, the accompanying victim role, and oppositional defiance enable angry adolescents to defend against depression and loss, to demand nurturance from others, to protect their precarious inner autonomy, and to undo their humiliation and shame by vengeance and reversal. The author suggests that adolescent anger arises from an underlying wish to coerce objects into providing all-giving restitution for losse

Using Freud's hysterical conversion model as a basis for reviewing the psychological features in psychogenic voice disorder, this paper describes research findings which show that individuals with this condition are not usually suffering from severe psychopathology but tend to be women who are experiencing high levels of stress (commonly associated with interpersonal relationship conflicts, low self-esteem, the burden of responsibility and feelings of powerlessness), and have above-average musculoskeletal tension as well as difficulties in voicing their feelings or views. The review indicates

Psychoanalysis cannot presently account for the paradoxical nature of dissociation--those states of simultaneous knowing and not knowing in which perceptions are accurate and fully conscious, yet have no credibility to the subject. This paper suggests that dissociation is actually a different way of knowing: the patient constructs self-knowledge only in interaction with another. The subject perceives sensations and states of mind, but relegates to another the job of interpreting this experience. The divided sense of self reflects a division of labor between the subject, who registers sensation

Accepting the common lay definition of nightmare as any form of upsetting, dreamlike cognition occurring in the midst of sleep, the author argues for a classification of nightmares that would be based, not on physiological findings, but on what the upsetting nocturnal occurrence turns out to mean to the dreamer. Three types of nightmare identified on this basis are illustrated through dream sequences from classic Hollywood movies and amplified by clinical examples: (1) the dream that symbolizes the next stage of life as unusually daunting, (2) the dream that exposes the shadow of another perso

This paper explores the mystical unconscious as a dimension of psychoanalysis that moves beyond psychoanalysis's emphasis on repression and interpretation. Drawing from psychoanalytic insights, mystical traditions, and personal clinical encounters with states of spirit possession, the author argues for a psychoanalytic stance of witnessing. Through concepts such as the mystical vertex, internal third, and the analyst as a double, the author presents psychoanalysis as an art of profound attunement-one that welcomes spectral, sublime, and sacred psychic experiences not as pathology, but as meani

A growing sensitivity has emerged within psychoanalytic theory and intervention to the specific conditions of complex posttraumatic pathology and its clinical challenges. Yet an articulated, encompassing view of the diverse proposals within this new sensitivity is still lacking. This article advances such articulation through a scoping review of psychoanalytic interventions focused on trauma and dissociation published over the past 15 years. Our analysis identifies five axes of trauma-sensitive psychoanalytic practice addressing vulnerability to dysregulation, limited symbolic access to trauma

The archaic story of the Thracian musician Orpheus and his bride Eurydice is heard first as an ancient myth of marriage and death, wedding and separation. The mixture of expectation and dread in its sentiments is sounded still today in the contemporary wedding songs and funeral laments of the Mediterranean and the Balkans. Similar sequences of engagement and withdrawal, ascent and descent, change and metamorphosis are found in the adventures and vicissitudes of other mythic figures. Its premise of the soul's transmigration and its promise of psychic transformation inspired the religious rumina

Songs that interrupt the psychoanalytic psychotherapist's countertransference reverie are invariably relevant and potentially useful. Like any other countertransference "presence," songs accompanying the narrative may contribute to understanding both patient and analytic process. Taking their intrusive, fecund, pesky presence one step further, song lyrics may be used as metaphor-saturated interventions, helping reach the well-defended patient. Five brief vignettes illustrate the process. Because we must learn to tolerate ordinary unhappiness, Blues music, a carrier of preconscious mythic theme
