Carbohydrate digestion in Lutzomyia longipalpis' larvae (Diptera - Psychodidae).

Lutzomyia longipalpis is the principal species of phlebotomine incriminated as vector of Leishmania infantum, the etiological agent of visceral leishmaniasis in the Americas. Despite its importance as vector, almost nothing related to the larval biology, especially about its digestive system has been published. The objective of the present study was to obtain an overview of carbohydrate digestion by the larvae. Taking in account that phlebotomine larvae live in the soil rich in decaying materials and microorganisms we searched principally for enzymes capable to hydrolyze carbohydrates present

Copulatory courtship song in Lutzomyia migonei (Diptera: psychodidae).

Lutzomyia migonei is a vector of leishmaniasis with a wide distribution in South America, which could favour population differentiation and speciation. Cryptic species of the Lutzomyia longipalpis complex, the widely distributed sand fly vector of visceral leishmaniasis in Latin America, have previously been shown to display distinct copulation songs. We found that Lu. migonei males also produce a song during copulation. This "lovesong" presents short trains (6-8 pulses) with an inter-pulse interval around 26 ms and is potentially involved in cryptic female choice and insemination success.

Wolbachia infections of phlebotomine sand flies (Diptera: Psychodidae).

Old and New World phlebotomine sand fly species were screened for infection with Wolbachia, intracellular bacterial endosymbionts found in many arthropods and filarial nematodes. Of 53 samples representing 15 species, nine samples offour species were found positive for Wolbachia by polymerase chain reaction amplification using primers for the Wolbachia surface protein (wsp) gene. Five of the wsp gene fragments from four species were cloned, sequenced, and used for phylogenetic analysis. These wsp sequences were placed in three different clades within the arthropod associated Wolbachia (groups

Nematocera (Ceratopogonidae, Psychodidae, Simuliidae and Culicidae) and control methods.

The biology, veterinary importance and control of certain Nematocera are described and discussed. Culicoides spp. (family Ceratopogonidae) transmit the arboviruses of bluetongue (BT), African horse sickness (AHS), bovine ephemeral fever (BEF) and Akabane. Some other arboviruses have been isolated from these species, while fowl pox has been transmitted experimentally by Culicoides. These insects are vectors of the parasitic protozoans Leucocytozoon caulleryi and Haemoproteus nettionis, and the parasitic nematodes Onchocerca gutturosa, O. gibsoni and O. cervicalis. They also cause recurrent summ

Presence of Sergentomyia (Parrotomyia) lewisi (Diptera: Psychodidae) in Tunisia.

In Tunisia, 17 phlebotomine sand fly species are reported, belonging to genera Phlebotomus and Sergentomyia. However, subsequent to faunal studies and outbreaks of leishmaniasis in different regions of the country, unrecognized sand fly species could exist. Indeed, we report in this study the presence of Sergentomyia (Parrotomyia) lewisiParrot 1948. A brief collection of phlebotomine sand flies was undertaken in August 2016 in Khbina locality, in Sidi Bouzid governorate situated in Central Tunisia, which constitutes an old focus of Zoonotic Cutaneous Leishmaniasis. Sand flies were collected, u

The subgenus Adlerius Nitzulescu (Diptera, Psychodidae, Phlebotomus) in Iran.

Phlebotomine sandflies of the subgenus Adlerius (Diptera: Psychodidae) includes 20 described species and two unnamed from Afghanistan. The female sandflies of this subgenus are considered as indistinguishable morphologically and their identification is based on the identification of associated males. Some species of Adlerius are suspected vectors of visceral leishmaniasis and at least one species has been implicated as a vector of cutaneous leishmaniasis. Four species of Adlerius have been recorded in Iran in the past: P. brevis Theodor and Mesghali, 1964, P. halepensis Theodor, 1948, P. longi

Sandflies (Diptera: Psychodidae) in an urban area of Northeastern Brazil.

INTRODUCTION:: The sandfly fauna is well studied globally. In Brazil, sandfly fauna is very diverse in the Northeast region, especially in states such as Maranhão, Ceará, and Bahia. However, in the State of Pernambuco, the distribution of these insects is still not well known. Therefore, the objective of this study was to identify the different species that constitute the sandfly fauna in an urban area in the Northeast region of Brazil, where an outbreak of visceral leishmaniasis (VL) was recently reported. METHODS:: The sandflies were collected from an urban area endemic for VL, at five coll

Sandflies (Diptera: Psychodidae) in the Bar area of Montenegro (Yugoslavia).

The species and ecology of sandflies present in the coastal district of Bar, which lies in Montenegro, an endemic focus of visceral leishmaniasis (VL), were investigated in 1996-1999. A mean of 10 cases of VL and a greater number of viral infections (some of which are attributed to pathogens transmitted by sandflies) are diagnosed each year in this district. Phlebotomus papatasi, P. perfiliewi, P. tobbi, P. neglectus and Sergentomyia minuta were collected, P. perfiliewi being recorded for the first time in Montenegro. The ecology and distribution of each of these five species are described and

The transcriptome of Lutzomyia longipalpis (Diptera: Psychodidae) male reproductive organs.

BACKGROUND: It has been suggested that genes involved in the reproductive biology of insect disease vectors are potential targets for future alternative methods of control. Little is known about the molecular biology of reproduction in phlebotomine sand flies and there is no information available concerning genes that are expressed in male reproductive organs of Lutzomyia longipalpis, the main vector of American visceral leishmaniasis and a species complex. METHODS/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We generated 2678 high quality ESTs ("Expressed Sequence Tags") of L. longipalpis male reproductive organs th

Phylogenetic relationships among species of Lutzomyia, subgenus Lutzomyia (Diptera: Psychodidae).

Lutzomyia França is the largest and most diverse sand fly genus in the New World and contains all the species involved in the transmission of American visceral leishmaniasis (AVL). Morphological characters were used to test the monophyly and to infer phylogenetic relationships among members of the Lutzomyia subgenus. Fifty-two morphological characters from male and female adult specimens belonging to 18 species of Lu. (Lutzomyia) were scored and analyzed. The resulting phylogeny confirms the monophyly of this subgenus and reveals four main internal clades. These four clades, however, do not su

Stomodaeal valve ultrastructure in the sandfly Lutzomyia longipalpis (Diptera: Psychodidae).

The stomodaeal valve and adjacent cardia region of the alimentary canal of the phlebotomine sandfly Lutzomyia longipalpis have been studied using electron microscopy. With the scanning electron microscope (SEM), numerous pit-like structures of different sizes were found in the surface of the valve of male and female flies. Under the transmission electron microscope (TEM), the cells adjacent to the pores were shown to have numerous mitochondria and to lack neural innervation. It is suggested that the pit-like structures are probably secretory. A typical basiconic sensilla was found on the inner

Mothflies (Diptera: Psychodidae) in hospitals: a guide to their identification and methods for their control.

Repeated observation of "mothflies" at CHU Brugmann (Horta site hospital in Brussels) is not an isolated incident. Many public buildings have been infested by these Diptera of the Psychodidae Family. Although the species currently seen in Belgium is not a danger to human health, any infestation should be swiftly eradicated so as to limit the risks of a massive proliferation, source of hygiene problems and of potential bacterial dissemination. A good knowledge of adult and larval biology allows the potential sites of infestation to be quickly identified. The method to be envisaged to solve the
