USING PSYCHOLINGUISTICS IN DEVELOPING THERAPEUTIC METHODS FOR OVERCOMING ANXIETY STATES.

PURPOSE: The study aimed to identify the relationship between speech characteristics and anxiety levels to identify psycholinguistic markers that can serve as diagnostic tools in psychotherapy practice. METHODS: A sample of 160 participants was stratified by anxiety level (high, medium, low) using standardized methods (STAI, BAI). Quantitative analysis showed significant differences in the speech of the groups: participants with high anxiety used shorter sentences, were characterized by a lower level of lexical diversity, more frequent use of negatively colored vocabulary and the pronoun "I",

Psycholinguistic and motor theories of apraxia of speech.

This article sketches the relationships between modern conceptions of apraxia of speech (AOS) and current models of neuromotor and neurolinguistic disorders. The first section is devoted to neurophysiological perspectives of AOS, and its relation to dysarthrias and to limb apraxia is discussed. The second section introduces the logogen model and considers AOS in relation to supramodal aspects of aphasia. In the third section, AOS with the background of psycholinguistic models of spoken language production, including the Levelt model and connectionist models, is discussed. In the fourth section

Psycholinguistic assessment of developmental speech disorders.

Although various psycholinguistic models of speech and language processing have been developed to account for levels of breakdown in developmental speech disorders, it is not obvious how they are to be applied in clinical practice. At the same time, speech and language therapists have routinely been using a wide range of procedures, including published tests, that tap different levels of phonological processing in the child. When analysed and classified appropriately, these procedures can form the basis for a comprehensive psycholinguistic investigation of developmental speech disorders. The a

Psycholinguistic profile of young adults with Down syndrome.

BACKGROUND: The phenotype of Down syndrome (DS) is usually characterized by relative strengths in visual skills and severe deficits in auditory processing; this has consequences for language and communication. To date, it is not known whether this pattern characterizes the psycholinguistic profile of young adults with DS. AIMS: This study aimed to assess whether, relative to their cognitive level, young adults with DS present a specific and homogeneous phenotype for both auditory and visual psycholinguistic skills. METHODS AND PROCEDURES: Fifty young adults with DS and 50 peers with other in

The psycholinguistic analysis of acquired dyslexias: some illustrations.

Three approaches to the neuropsychology of cognitive function are distinguished: the neuroanatomical (where the primary concern is to correlate particular disorders of cognitive function with particular lesion sites), the 'general-cognitive' (in which associations are sought between impairments of performance on specific cognitive tasks and general disorders of broadly defined cognitive processes) and the model-building (in which one attempts to interpret the pattern of impairments and preservations of some cognitive function produced by brain damage in terms of an explicit model of the normal

[Psycholinguistic aspects of fragile X chromosome syndrome].

Fragile X syndrome is the first cause of hereditary mental retardation. Numerous studies have approached the physical and behavioural phenotypes. This paper will review the main characteristics of speech and language in children with fragile X syndrome. Boys show a late language acquisition, differing comprehension and expression levels, good semantic and syntax acquisition, and speech problems: perseverance, unequal rythm and pragmatic difficulties: respect for conversation turns, speech maintenance, active avoidance of visual contact. A lesser degree of speech problems is described for FXS g

[Psycholinguistic analysis of the speech of senile dementia patients].

The author has studied 17 patients with senile dementia and its combination (in case of an underlying atrophic process) with cerebral atherosclerosis but without local pathomorphological changes. It has been found that in senile dementia the multilevel and multiaspect functional system of speech is impaired at both, a lower, phonetic, and higher speech (a phonological analysis) levels. Other findings with regard to the speech level include disturbances of programming a speech statement or internal speech (dynamic aphasia), impairment of grammatical structuring and damaged lexical choice. The a

[Periventricular leukomalacia and spastic diplegia: implications in the psycholinguistic abilities].

BACKGROUND: spastic diplegic cerebral palsy (D-CP) is frequently related to periventricular leukomalacia (PVL), which usually affects the descending motor fibers of the association cortex and association fibers of the visual, auditory and somesthesic functions. AIM: to verify the performance of children with D-CP regarding their psycholinguistic skills. METHOD: participants were eight individuals of both genders and with chronological ages varying from four to six years, diagnosed with D-CP, having PVL confirmed through magnetic resonance. These children were evaluated through the Illinois T

Time for a Change: Why Psycholinguistics Should Move Beyond the Content-Function Word Distinction.

The traditional distinction between content and function words continues to underpin much psycholinguistic research, even though other areas of linguistics have long recognized it as problematic (e.g. Bennis et al., 1983, and Ishkhanyan et al., 2017 within aphasiology; Diessel, 1999: 150-153, and Bisang, 2010: 291 within linguistic typology; Emonds, 1985: 162-164, and Rauh, 1993 within grammatical theory). We argue that relying on this pre-theoretical distinction in psycholinguistics can obscure meaningful variation and potentially lead to misleading results. We illustrate this with Staub (202

Multimodal processing in face-to-face interactions: A bridging link between psycholinguistics and sensory neuroscience.

In face-to-face communication, humans are faced with multiple layers of discontinuous multimodal signals, such as head, face, hand gestures, speech and non-speech sounds, which need to be interpreted as coherent and unified communicative actions. This implies a fundamental computational challenge: optimally binding only signals belonging to the same communicative action while segregating signals that are not connected by the communicative content. How do we achieve such an extraordinary feat, reliably, and efficiently? To address this question, we need to further move the study of human commun

Etiological differences in patterns of psycholinguistic development of children of IQ 30 to 60.

We compared the psycholinguistic abilities of 131 mentally retarded children (IQs 30 to 60) of different etiological classifications (Down's syndrome, biologically brain damaged, environmentally caused retardation, unknown cause) and characterized each etiology according to the different patterns of psycholinguistic skills exhibited by the children. Level of skills was determined by the Illinois Test of Psycholinguistic Abilities, which was administered to each subject. Down's syndrome children exhibited significantly lower verbal-auditory skills than visual-motor skills. The environmentally c

The influence of psycholinguistic variables on articulatory errors in naming in progressive motor speech degeneration.

We describe an analysis of speech errors on a confrontation naming task in a man with progressive speech degeneration of 10-year duration from Pick's disease. C.S. had a progressive non-fluent aphasia together with a motor speech impairment and early assessment indicated some naming impairments. There was also an absence of significant phonological or semantic impairment. In order to examine naming difficulties and the factors that influence his speech production errors, we selected 210 words varying in frequency, age of acquisition (AoA), imageability, phonemic length and syllable length and

[Speech therapy intervention in phonological disorders from the psycholinguistic paradigm of speech processing].

The aim of this study is to present a survey of speech therapy intervention in phonological disorders (PD). We will examine the concepts of normal phonological development and those involved in PD in order to understand how they have been dealt with, historically, in speech therapy intervention. Lastly, we will describe how evaluation and intervention are carried out from the speech processing paradigm. Phonetic phonological skills allow people to decode the phonic strings they hear so as to be able to gain access to their phonological form and meaning. These abilities also enable them to enco

Production-Comprehension Asymmetry in the Processing of Multiple Adjuncts in Korean and its Psycholinguistic Implications.

This study examined word-order preferences in Korean sentences containing temporal and locative adjuncts, focusing on the interplay between "TIME-before-PLACE (TbP)" and "LONG-before-SHORT (LbS)" preferences. While LbS is well established for Korean argument structures, its role in adjunct processing remained unclear. Experiment 1 investigated production via sentence elicitation with constituents of varying lengths. Results revealed a robust TbP preference (85%) dominating over LbS: 68% of sentences maintained TbP order even when locative adjuncts were lengthened-contrasting sharply with the 3

A psycholinguistic investigation of biased semantic networks in contamination-related obsessive-compulsive disorder.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Increasing evidence confirms the significant involvement of disgust in contamination-related obsessive-compulsive disorder (C-OCD). More insights into the role of disgust within cognitive biases in OCD may illuminate the psychopathology and corresponding subdimensions or subtypes. The present study introduces a new approach adopted from psycholinguistic research to investigate biases in word association networks in C-OCD versus other OCD symptom dimensions (nC-OCD). METHOD: Individuals with OCD (N = 70; n = 42 with C-OCD, n = 28 with nC-OCD) and healthy controls (HC

Identifying Insomnia From Social Media Posts: Psycholinguistic Analyses of User Tweets.

BACKGROUND: Many people suffer from insomnia, a sleep disorder characterized by difficulty falling and staying asleep during the night. As social media have become a ubiquitous platform to share users' thoughts, opinions, activities, and preferences with their friends and acquaintances, the shared content across these platforms can be used to diagnose different health problems, including insomnia. Only a few recent studies have examined the prediction of insomnia from Twitter data, and we found research gaps in predicting insomnia from word usage patterns and correlations between users' insomn

Language Processing in Posterior Fossa Tumour Patients: Psycholinguistic Insights into the Word-Finding Ability.

BACKGROUND: Word finding - the ability to retrieve and produce appropriate words in response to prompts or visual stimuli - is impaired in some patients with a posterior fossa tumour. Yet, few studies use preoperative assessment as a baseline, and an in-depth linguistic analysis of tasks assessing word-finding ability remains limited. The current study aims to fill this knowledge gap by analysing pre- and postoperative word-finding ability and identifying its linguistic predictors. METHOD: 38 English-speaking patients (19 males and 19 females), aged between 2,5 and 17,6 years and diagnosed wi
