Maternal psychological growth following childbirth.

Although maternal postpartum mental health has been extensively studied, rather little is known regarding the factors that may facilitate psychological growth following childbirth. The present study set forth to examine various pre-birth, birth, and post-birth correlates of overall psychological growth and growth domains in postpartum women, assessed within the first months following childbirth. A sample of 428 women completed self-report measures pertaining to psychological growth, mental health, maternal attachment, and childbirth characteristics. We found that the majority of women reported

Growth hormone therapy in childhood-onset growth hormone deficiency: adult anthropometric and psychological outcomes.

The current adult heights of hypopituitary children treated with recombinant human growth hormone (rGH) now range between -1.5 and -0.7 height standard deviations (Ht SDS) of control populations. These height outcomes are markedly better than the ones observed following treatment with pituitary-derived human growth hormone (pGH) (between -4.7 and -2.0 Ht SDS). Although treatment with rGH has not yielded adult heights that are equal to genetic target heights, the discrepancy is much less now than in previous decades. Higher rGH dose, longer duration of treatment, early age at diagnosis, correct

Growth and Psychological Development in Postoperative Patients With Anterior Encephaloceles.

PURPOSE: Anterior encephaloceles are rare malformations that are frequently associated with other brain anomalies. This study evaluates the growth and psychological development of children following encephalocele repair. MATERIALS & METHODS: Growth and psychological assessment was done in 24 children with only encephalocele (group I); nine children with encephalocele and hydrocephalus (group II); seven children with encephalocele, hydrocephalus, and secondary malformations (group III); and 40 apparently healthy control subjects. Psychological assessment was done by evaluating intelligence and

Applications of individual growth curve modeling for pediatric psychology research.

OBJECTIVE: To provide a brief, nontechnical introduction to individual growth curve modeling for the analysis of longitudinal data. Several applications of individual growth curve modeling for pediatric psychology research are discussed. METHODS: To illustrate these applications, we analyze data from an ongoing pediatric psychology study of the possible impact of spina bifida on child and family development (N = 135). Three repeated observations, spaced by approximately 2 years, contributed to the analyses (M age at baseline = 8.84). RESULTS: Results indicated that individual linear growth c

Decreased psychological well-being in adult patients with growth hormone deficiency.

OBJECTIVE: Besides effects on body composition, bone mineral content and lipid metabolism, GH seems to influence quality of life, according to previous studies of limited numbers of patients with GH deficiency of childhood and adult origin. In this study psychological well-being was assessed in a large number of patients with GH deficiency of adult origin. DESIGN: A follow-up study of patients with hypopituitarism on routine replacement therapy with L-thyroxine, cortisone acetate and sex steroids. PATIENTS: Eighty-six patients (51 men, mean age 55.4 years and 35 women, mean age 54.9 years) d

Physical and psychological capabilities during substitution therapy with recombinant growth hormone in adults with growth hormone deficiency.

In a double-blind cross-over study with recombinant methionyl growth hormone (GH) and placebo during 12 weeks, the effect of GH substitution therapy (0.5-06 IU.kg-1.week-1) on physical performance, muscle strength, bone mineral density, and mood and cognitive functions was investigated in 6 GH-deficient adults. During GH substitution serum concentrations of insulin-like growth factor-I and procollagen-III peptide increased in all 6 patients, whereas concentrations of serum urea decreased. Five of the patients identified the GH period and reported improved well-being with increased mental alert

Psychological Stress Promotes Tumor Growth in Hepatocellular Carcinoma Models Through Myeloid Signaling.

Psychological stress has long been implicated in cancer progression, yet the underlying biological pathways remain incompletely understood. In particular, the influence of stress on myeloid cells remains poorly explored. Here, we demonstrate that restraint stress accelerates hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) progression through coordinated regulation of macrophages and neutrophils. Across sexes and strains, stressed mice exhibited enhanced tumor growth accompanied by marked neutrophil infiltration and elevated expression of neutrophil-attracting chemokines. Integrative analyses combining single-c

Emerging posttraumatic growth: a prospective study with pre- and posttrauma psychological predictors.

Posttraumatic growth (PTG) is viewed as a positive psychological change resulting from a struggle with trauma. A number of trauma-related factors have been proven effective in predicting PTG; however, the effects of pretrauma psychological factors on PTG have not been adequately evaluated (e.g., using a prospective design). This prospective study examined the effects of pretrauma psychological factors (e.g., coping styles, prior trauma) on PTG. In total, 810 Taiwanese undergraduate students were recruited for a baseline survey (Time 1), among whom 592 completed a survey 2 months later (Time 2)

The physical, psychological, educational and professional conditions of young adults given growth hormone for childhood growth hormone deficit.

Twenty five of the 75 patients having been given human growth hormone in the Pediatric Nancy Endocrinological Division have reach final adult height. All have been treated the same way, 10 boys and 4 girls were diagnosed as isolated deficit, 7 boys and 4 girls as combined deficit. The physical, sexual, radiological, intellectual, professional and psychological characteristics have been defined either during the treatment follow-up or at a final interview. All results have been compared to the familial conditions if possible. Final adult statures are in the low range of the normal (-2 DS). The

Psychological and clinical correlates of posttraumatic growth in cancer: A systematic and critical review.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study is to describe major findings on posttraumatic growth (PTG) in cancer, by analyzing its various definitions, assessment tools, and examining its main psychological and clinical correlates. METHODS: A search in relevant databases (PsycINFO, Pubmed, ProQuest, Scopus, and Web of Science) was performed using descriptors related to the positive reactions in cancer. Articles were screened by title, abstract, and full text. RESULTS: Seventy-two met the inclusion criteria. Most articles (46%) focused on breast cancer, used the PTG inventory (76%), and had a cro

Women with Ovarian Cancer: Examining the Role of Social Support and Rumination in Posttraumatic Growth, Psychological Distress, and Psychological Well-being.

The present study examined the role of social support and rumination (deliberate vs. intrusive) in posttraumatic growth (PTG), psychological distress (PD), and psychological well-being (PWB) among women with ovarian cancer. Sixty-seven women who had experienced ovarian cancer were recruited through social media and cancer-related websites, and completed an online survey. Contrary to hypotheses, results indicated that social support was not predictive of PTG, and the mediation of rumination was not significant in the regression of social support on PTG. Social support was, however, positively c

Impact of recombinant human growth hormone treatment on psychological profiles in hypopituitary patients with adult-onset growth hormone deficiency.

BACKGROUND: We examined the effect of growth hormone (GH) administration on the psychological capacity and sense of well-being in 25 patients with adult-onset GH-deficiency (GHD). METHODS: Very low dosages [0.5-1.0 UIday(-1) s.c. at bed-time] of recombinant human (rh)-GH (n = 13; aged 50+/-15 years, mean+/-SD) or placebo (n = 12, 53+/-14 years) were given at random for a 6-month period. Quality of life was assessed by using the Italian version of the self-rating Kellner Symptom Questionnaire (KSQ) and the Hamilton Depression Scale (HDS). RESULTS: No difference in insulin-like growth factor I

Rumination, psychological distress and post-traumatic growth in women diagnosed with breast cancer.

OBJECTIVE: Rumination, the repetitive and recursive rehearsal of cognitive content, has been linked to depression and anxiety in physically well populations, and to post-traumatic growth (PTG) in physical illness populations. Women diagnosed with breast cancer may experience both psychological distress and PTG. As rumination may influence outcomes through distinct pathways, this study investigated the association of intrusion, brooding and instrumental subcomponents of rumination with psychological distress and PTG in the breast cancer context. METHODS: Women diagnosed with primary breast can

Impact of maternal psychological distress on fetal weight, prematurity and intrauterine growth retardation.

BACKGROUND: There are conflicting results regarding the association of maternal antenatal distress with preterm birth and low birth weight. This study investigated the association between maternal distress and intrauterine growth abnormality, low birth weight and preterm birth. METHODS: Three mutually exclusive and homogeneous groups of pregnant women (with actual psychiatric disorder, with maternal psychological distress, and healthy comparisons) underwent fetal ultrasound examinations, uterine and umbilical artery Doppler velocimetry. Academic achievement and psychological adjustment in short children. The National Cooperative Growth Study.

Limited information is available on the educational and behavioral functioning of short children. Through 27 participating medical centers, we administered a battery of psychologic tests to 166 children referred for growth hormone (GH) treatment (5 to 16 years) who were below the third percentile for height (mean height = -2.7 SD). The sample consisted of 86 children with isolated growth-hormone deficiency (GHD) and 80 children with idiopathic short stature (ISS). Despite average intelligence, absence of significant family dysfunction, and advantaged social background, a large number of childr

Predictors of post-traumatic psychological growth in the late years after lung transplantation.

BACKGROUND: Although lung transplantation improves quality of life, most psychosocial research focuses on adverse psychological and social functioning outcomes. Positive effects, particularly in the late-term years as physical morbidities increase, have received little attention. We provide the first data on a psychological benefit - post-traumatic growth (PTG) - and we focused on long-term (>5 yr) survivors. METHODS: Among 178 patients from a prospective study of mental health during the first two yr post-transplant, we recontacted survivors 6-11 yr post-transplant. We assessed PTG (i.e., po

Psychological correlates of stress-induced cortisol and growth hormone releases in neurotic patients.

The mirror drawing test was performed in 23 neurotic patients and plasma cortisol (Fk) and growth hormone (GH) were measured serially throughout the test. The patient's personality was assessed by the Minnesota Multiphastic Personality Inventory and related to the endocrine findings. The results indicated that 1) Fk and GH have different personality correlates; 2) the Fk responders tend to be more "defensive" trying to maintain good "self-control" over inner mental processes; 3) high GH level seems to be associated with personality features such as exaggeration, hostility, and a distorted thin
