Theory of psychological adaptive modes.

When an individual is facing a stressor and normal stress-response mechanism cannot guarantee sufficient adaptation, special emotional states, adaptive modes, are activated (for example a depressive reaction). Adaptive modes are involuntary states of mind, they are of comprehensive nature, they interfere with normal functioning, and they cannot be repressed or controlled the same way as many emotions. Their transformational nature differentiates them from other emotional states. The object of the adaptive mode is to optimize the problem-solving abilities according to the situation that has pro

A psychological theory of child abuse.

This paper presents a detailed study of two patients hospitalized in a closed psychiatric unit on which the treatment program emphasized dynamically oriented individual psychotherapy and family therapy. The first patient was hospitalized following physical abuse of her four-year-old daughter, while the second was hospitalized for a postpartum depression eight weeks following the birth of her first child, a girl. Although the presenting pictures in these two patients were markedly different, the psychodynamic patterns were so similar that a detailed comparison of the two cases seems to offer us

Without more theory, psychology will be a headless rider.

We argue that Yarkoni's proposed solutions to the generalizability crisis are half-measures because he does not recognize that the crisis arises from investigators' underappreciation of the roles of theory in experimental research. Rather than embracing qualitative analysis, the research community should make an effort to develop better theories and work toward consistently incorporating theoretical results into experimental practice.

Review of psychological trauma: theory, practice, policy and research.

We present a concise state-of-the-art review of psychological trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) for mental health practitioners. This article is also set to present the nature of traumatic incidents, their common presentation, their disruptions to normal psychological and biological functioning, and the negative health care impact of untreated incidents. Originally, the trauma response to extreme life events and PTSD was conceptualized as normal responses to overwhelming situations. However, in the last few years, there has been an increase in the acceptance of the idea that exp

Paranoia and narcissism in psychoanalytic theory. Contributions of self psychology to the theory and therapy of the paranoid disorders.

Many factors go into a choice of a therapeutic focus: the patient's psychopathology; the therapist's training, countertransference reactions, and ideological beliefs; and, importantly, a decision about what seems most amenable to treatment and change. As a theory, self psychology describes one aspect of the paranoid process; as such, it is an incomplete theory that complements rather than invalidates more classical theories. As a technique, however, it suggests a style and focus conducive to working with paranoid patients, one that is markedly supportive, nonconfrontational, yet also interpret

The Psychological Effects of Guillain-Barré Syndrome: A Grounded Theory Study.

Guillain-Barré syndrome is a rare neurological condition. Research has increased our understanding of the etiology, prognosis, and effective medical treatment of the illness. There is a lack of understanding regarding the psychological effects and what could help patients. This study aimed to begin to address this using constructivist grounded theory. Eleven interviews were conducted with participants who had received a diagnosis of Guillain-Barré syndrome in the preceding 4 years. The model that emerged identified two key processes: "Loss, determination, and adjustment" and "The unknown." "Re

Foli's Theory of Psychological Trauma as a Framework For Nursing Research: A critique.

Nurses are regularly exposed to workplace traumatic events, including violence, aggression, witnessing patient deaths, and self-harming behavior and suicide attempts. These experiences can adversely affect nurse well-being and can interrelate with personal histories of trauma. Despite this, psychological trauma in nursing remains underexplored. Foli's mid-range theory of psychological trauma (2022) provides a contemporary framework for addressing this gap by identifying 7 types of psychological trauma in nursing practice while incorporating personal experiences beyond the clinical setting. Research and theory related to female reproduction: implications for clinical psychology.

Reproduction has been proposed as a cause of debilitation and psychological disturbance for centuries, recently reified through the three reproductive syndromes, the premenstrual syndrome, postnatal depression and the menopausal syndrome. The evidence for the existence of these syndromes is critically reviewed, and the different aetiological theories examined, with particular reference to biological and psychological theories. It is argued that whilst bio-medical therapies presently dominate the literature, their efficacy is questionable owing to the lack of clear evidence for a hormonal subst

Applying Fairbairn's Object Relations Theory to the Psychological Development of Anders Breivik.

The author summarizes the trauma/dissociation model of W.R.D. Fairbairn and applies it to the psychological development of Anders Breivik, the Norwegian mass murderer. Fairbairn's model focuses on the absolute dependency of the infant on its mother for all of its physical and psychological needs. Maternal indifference, neglect, or outright abuse is so catastrophic to the child's sense of security that he/she has to dissociate intolerable events. When dissociation is repeatedly deployed, the memories of parental failures gradually coalesce and form internal self and object structures that mirro

Application of psychological theories on the role of gender in caregiving to psycho-oncology research.

BackgroundCancer affects both men and women, yet systematic understanding of the role of gender in caregiving and dyadic caregiver-patient interactions is lacking. Thus, it may be useful to review how gender theories apply to cancer caregiving and to evaluate the adequacy of current cancer caregiving studies to the gender theories.MethodsSeveral databases, including MEDLINE (Ovid), PsychINFO, PubMed, and CINAHL, were used for searching articles published in English between 2000 and 2016. The search was restricted by age (≥18) and yielded 602 articles, which were subject to further screen and r

An exploratory assessment of theory of mind and psychological impairment in patients with bulimia nervosa.

This study aimed to investigate psychosocial functioning and different dimensions of theory of mind (ToM) in people with bulimia nervosa (BN) and Eating Disorder Not Otherwise Specified-BN type (EDNOS-BN). Psychosocial functioning and ToM were assessed in a sample of young adult females, 16 BN and 16 EDNOS-BN outpatients and 16 healthy controls (HCs). They were assessed using the Eating Disorder Inventory-Symptom Checklist-2 (EDI-2 SC) for evaluating psychological traits associated with eating disorders; the Symptom Checklist-90-Revised (SCL-90-R) for evaluating psychopathological status; and

Sleep disorders and the interpersonal-psychological theory of suicide: independent pathways to suicidality?

BACKGROUND: Although sleep disorders are a risk factor for suicidal behavior little research has examined why sleep disorders confer suicide risk. The present study examined the relation between two sleep disorders, insomnia symptoms and nightmares, and suicide risk in the context of Joiner's interpersonal-psychological theory of suicide (IPTS). METHODS: The present study utilized two large samples (N=747 and 604) recruited from two large public universities in the Southeast. Both studies included measures of insomnia symptoms, nightmares, depressive symptoms, and prior suicide attempts. In a

Understanding psychological flourishing across the lifespan: an integrative review of theory and evidence.

Psychological flourishing is increasingly recognised as a multidimensional construct within contemporary positive psychology. It extends beyond the mere absence of psychopathology to encompass the active presence of positive functioning across emotional, cognitive, social, and existential dimensions. Despite decades of theoretical development and empirical investigation, a coherent integrative account of how flourishing unfolds, varies, and can be cultivated across the entire human lifespan remains elusive. This integrative review synthesizes theoretical frameworks and empirical evidence perta

Childhood Abuse, the Interpersonal-Psychological Theory of Suicide, and the Mediating Role of Depression.

Although childhood abuse is a well-known risk factor for suicide, no studies have investigated the role of interpersonal-psychological (Joiner, 2005), constructs in this association. This study examined whether childhood physical, sexual, and emotional abuse were associated with IPTS constructs, and whether depressive symptoms mediated these associations. Ninety-one participants completed self-report measures. Emotional abuse predicted perceived burdensomeness and thwarted belongingness, and depressive symptoms mediated these associations. Physical abuse predicted the acquired capability for s

Speeding for fun? Exploring the speeding behavior of riders of heavy motorcycles using the theory of planned behavior and psychological flow theory.

This paper focuses on a special segment of motorcyclists in Taiwan--riders of heavy motorcycles--and investigates their speeding behavior and its affecting factors. It extends the theory of planned behavior (TPB) to explore motorcyclist speeding behavior by including the variables of psychological flow theory. The levels of sensation-seeking and riding experience are also used as grouping variables to investigate group differences from the influences of their affecting factors on speeding behavior. The results reveal that the psychological flow variables have greater predictive power in explai

Psychological traits and their explanation: A 20-year perspective from Reinforcement Sensitivity Theory.

Reinforcement Sensitivity Theory (RST) attributes certain personality traits to sensitivities of neural systems based on a detailed long-lasting neuropsychology of state control. (First book-length edition, 1982, 3rd edition, 2024). However, for trait system sensitivities, within-system details can largely be ignored. Here we provide an overview of the systems for personality researchers. We also extended the underdeveloped personality aspects of the neuropsychology. In the process of producing this extension, we discovered various lacunae in personality theory as a whole (and the role of scie

Value Fulfillment from a Cybernetic Perspective: A New Psychological Theory of Well-Being.

Value Fulfillment Theory (VFT) is a philosophical theory of well-being. Cybernetic Big Five Theory (CB5T) is a psychological theory of personality. Both start with a conception of the person as a goal-seeking (or value-pursuing) organism, and both take goals and the psychological integration of goals to be key to well-being. By joining VFT and CB5T, we produce a cybernetic value fulfillment theory in which we argue that well-being is best conceived as the fulfillment of psychologically integrated values. Well-being is the effective pursuit of a set of nonconflicting values that are emotionally
