Post-traumatic stress disorder should be distinguished from burnout, which often masks other psychological issues. Early detection within the workplace and treatment by occupational health services are essential.

In a sample of 75 women recruited from the community, we measured trauma/maltreatment history and symptoms of schizotypal personality disorder, using both questionnaire and interview measures. As hypothesized, individuals with histories of trauma/maltreatment had elevated levels of schizotypal symptoms. Among types of trauma/maltreatment, reported childhood neglect was especially strongly associated with schizotypal symptoms. Although posttraumatic stress disorder symptom severity, depression, dissociation, and difficulty identifying one's emotions were all associated with schizotypal symptoms

Examination of the mental state of patients suffering from facial trauma is rarely ever recorded, let alone screening them for posttraumatic stress disorders (PTSDs) or generalized anxiety disorder. Providing early support to the patient in light of such psychological conditions can improve the overall quality of life. The aim of this study was to perform a literature review to assess the relation of mental state disorders to facial trauma in terms of their prevalence, assess screening methodology, and also to evaluate the prognosis of individuals subjected to psychological intervention/screen

The emotional consequences of psychological traumatisms are varied: major depression, anxiety disorders, addictive behaviour, adjustement disorders, and functional symptoms. The most severe traumatisms are likely to trigger an acute stress reaction which can lead to a chronic state called post-traumatic stress disorder. A rigorous clinical evaluation will determine not only the nature of the causal events but also the factors involved in the patient's emotional vulnerability elicited through his personal biography. Apart from specific psychiatric syndromes the treatment of adjustment disorders

Fifty-eight female impatients consecutively hospitalized in the University Hospital Department of Psychiatry in Tours were interviewed with a clinician battery of instruments (among them, the SI-PTSD by Davidson). The diagnoses leading to hospitalization were: severe disorders of psychotic type (schizophrenic, schizophreniform, schizo-affective, schizoid and paranoid delusional disorders as well as bipolar disorder), borderline and narcissistic personalities for 7%, and other disorders for 53%. Among the results, we observed that 59% of these patients had experienced at least one major stressf

Head trauma is a significant health care problem. Treatment of the head trauma patient requires assistance from many different disciplines in order to maximize recovery of function. The fact that one fourth or more of head trauma patients are impaired in recovery because of psychological factors suggests that appropriate treatment programs are not being implemented in the United States. Organic factors can produce many of the symptoms reported by head trauma patients. However, these factors are more likely to contribute indirectly to such symptoms, and their influence declines as recovery prog

Musculoskeletal injuries comprise a large percentage of hospital admissions for adults and often contribute to persistent daily pain as an illness; opioid dependence; disability; and complaints of increased depression, anxiety, and symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder. The prevalence of depression and post-traumatic stress disorder after orthopaedic trauma has been found to be considerably greater than the general adult cohort. Soon after sustaining a fracture, psychological factors can predict pain and disability many months after injury, even after controlling for injury severity. Thus

Two studies examined the relation between psychological trauma and schizotypal symptoms. In Study 1, in which 1,510 adults completed telephone interviews, both childhood maltreatment and the experience of an injury or life-threatening event were significantly associated with schizotypal symptoms. In Study 2, in which 303 adults (oversampled for having elevated levels of schizotypal symptoms) completed extensive in-person assessments, both childhood maltreatment and meeting posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) Criterion A were significantly associated with schizotypal symptoms. Research has demonstrated that dementia sufferers may be victims of recent physical assault by family caregivers and other patients and staff in long-term care facilities. Some dementia sufferers have also been victims of violence at other points in their lives from events such as combat, physical and sexual abuse, natural and manmade disasters, and the like. These violent events may result in psychological trauma and the psychological aftermath of these violent incidents may last until death, if it is not treated. The purpose of this paper is to outline some intervention strategies regarding

Reports of not feeling understood are frequent in testimonies of psychological trauma. I argue that these feelings are not a matter of a cognitive failure but rather an expression of the absence of a more pervasive background feeling of belonging. Contemporary accounts of we-intentionality promise but ultimately fall short in explaining this sense of belonging. Gerda Walther offers an alternative account of communal experiences. Her notion of "habitual unification" can explain the background feelings of belonging that are woven through the individual's everyday experience of being in a shared

Extreme psychological and physical traumas cause dramatic symptom patterns which are insufficiently described by the psychiatric diagnostic criteria of post traumatic stress disorders (PTSD). Additionally, due to the neurobiological proximity and similarity of processing mechanisms of physical and psychological pain stimulation and extremely negative emotions, the patients often suffer from persistent pains even after the somatic healing process is completed. Epidemiological studies confirm the joint occurrence of pain and PTSD. The close relationship and the etiological and behavioral similar

This paper explores the separation of children from their parents that took place in British hospitals in the middle years of the 20th century (Bradley 2001). It is widely believed that this child-parent separation was the product of a failure to understand the child's psychological and social needs (Bowlby et al 1939, Brain and Maclay 1968, Branstetter 1966, Editorial 1957). Paediatric nurses have been blamed for this ignorance and the resulting failure of care (Bowlby et al 1939). However, evidence suggests that such accusations are flawed in logic and in fact: paediatric nurses of the time

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association between adult mood disorders and childhood psychological trauma in a developing country.
METHOD: Adults with and without mood disorders were assessed in a case-control study using the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview. Assessment of childhood trauma included physical and sexual abuse, frequent exposure to violence, and parental loss.
RESULTS: In two independent multivariate analyses, after adjusting for potential confounding factors, we found a higher odds ratio for frequent exposure to violence in the community (p = .037) and for physical a

There are various types of traumatic stimuli, such as catastrophic events like wars, natural calamities like earthquakes, and personal trauma from physical and psychological neglect or abuse and sexual abuse. Traumatic events can be divided into type I and type II trauma, and their impacts on individuals depend not only on the severity and duration of the traumas but also on individuals' self-evaluation of the traumatic events. Individual stress reactions to trauma include posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), complex PTSD and trauma-related depression. Trauma-related depression is a reactive

Psychologically traumatic experiences can have long-lasting physical and mental health effects on pregnant people, increasing the risk of adverse pregnancy, childbirth, and neonatal outcomes. The effect of maternal psychological trauma, assessed prenatally, on offspring outcomes throughout development is understudied. This secondary analysis of a systematic review investigated the scope of research examining links between prenatally assessed maternal trauma and offspring outcomes to identify areas of focus and those needing further investigation. Of 576 studies identified in the systematic rev

The documentation of psychological trauma is obviously a challenge to clinicians while they are diving deep into remote events related to their clients or patients. The potential role of psychological trauma in the early developmental stages, and even the existence of adverse childhood experiences, is important to prove, yet it is difficult to do so. A diverse range of methods have been applied, all of which presumably benchmark a big therapeutic step; however, these enthusiastic methods frequently do not last for long. While hypnosis supporters, Freudian and Neo-Freudian disciples can be acut

OBJECTIVE: The etiology of rheumatic diseases is unclear, but it is thought that environmental factors added to immunogenetic mechanisms in chronic inflammatory diseases play a role. Many inflammatory disorders, autoimmune diseases, and painful conditions have been shown to be associated with the psychological trauma of childhood. The aim of the present study was to investigate childhood psychological trauma that is considered to be one of the environmental factors that initiate inflammation on patients with rheumatic diseases.
METHODS: In our study, a total of 440 patients (220 patients who

Neurodevelopment is a highly complex process, influenced by a wide range of interacting genetic and environmental factors. Recent developments in fetal, neonatal and infant behavioural genetics and brain imaging methods have allowed for more detailed investigation of the effects of early adverse environment on the developing brain. This review aims to provide background for neurobiological understanding of how the prolonged exposure to stress or trauma during early childhood affects subsequent cognitive, emotional and social development. Initially, a brief overview of brain development is prov
