The widespread adoption of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in military operations has profoundly transformed modern warfare, introducing new combat paradigms that significantly affect the psychological well-being of service members. This review systematically examines the primary applications of UAVs on the battlefield and explores the complex relationship between UAV warfare and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among military personnel. It analyses the unique psychological stressors associated with UAV operations, such as the moral dilemmas of remote killing, the persistent tension from

The Department of Defense predicts that future conflicts will involve large-scale combat operations (LSCOs) characterized by high-intensity warfare between technologically advanced nations. These conflicts may result in prolonged exposure to violence, increasing the risk of severe mental health consequences for military personnel, veterans, and civilians. Research on past wars and ongoing conflicts, such as the war in Ukraine, demonstrates the heightened risks of post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, moral injury, and compassion fatigue in LSCOs. Unlike previous conflicts in Iraq and Afg

The provision of effective and timely behavioral health care for veterans returning from the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan has become the focus of national attention. In this special issue, attempts to provide psychological care for service members and their families are examined in light of three key constructs. First, it is contended that at no other time in history has more attention been paid to the psychological consequences of engaging in combat. Second, for the first time in recorded warfare, psychological morbidity is likely to far outstrip physical injury associated with combat. F

This article reviews the literature on the phenomenon of suicide bombing. It addresses the question of just how much a psychological understanding of the individuals involved can aid in prevention. The article looks at historical, epidemiological, and cultural perspectives and compares the nonpsychological and psychological approaches to suicide bombing. On the basis of the material available it seems that social processes such as group-dynamic indoctrination and political factors are decisive in analyzing this problem. Cultural, nationalistic, and religious factors are important. The conclusi

Not since the Korean War have the Canadian Forces engaged in combat missions like those in Afghanistan. Combat, asymmetric warfare, violent insurgency and the constant threat of improvised explosive devices all contribute to the psychological stressors experienced by Canadian soldiers. Mental health teams deployed with the soldiers and provided assessment, treatment and education. Lessons learned included refuting the myth that all psychological disorders would be related to trauma; confirming that most patients do well after exposure to trauma; confirming that treating disorders in a war zone

The Armed Forces Radiobiological Research Institute (AFRRI) has developed a research program to determine the major health risks from exposure to ionizing radiation in combination with biological and chemical warfare agents and to assess the extent to which exposure to ionizing radiation compromises the effectiveness of protective drugs, vaccines, and other biological and chemical warfare prophylactic and treatment strategies. AFRRI's Defense Technology Objective MD22 supports the development of treatment modalities and studies to assess the mortality rates for combined injuries from exposure

As the most prominent portion of the human body, the face embraces a multifaceted responsibility for functionality and survival while contributing to identity and self-image. Inopportunely, due to its distinctive anatomical location, the face as a unit is highly suspectable to trauma, particularly in warfare. As a result, facial injury creates a physical and psychological trauma that needs to be addressed immediately. In the following article, a detailed literature review was conducted to examine the interplay between facial injuries throughout multiple wars in Iraq and their management. The a

BACKGROUND: Survivors of the 1988 Halabja chemical attack have experienced severe, chronic trauma, yet limited research has examined the long-term psychological and biological consequences of chemical warfare exposure more than three decades later.
AIMS: To examine long-term post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms, depression/anxiety symptoms, somatic symptoms and perceived stress among survivors of the Halabja chemical attack, and to investigate the associations of trauma exposure, sociodemographic factors and hair cortisol concentrations (HCCs) with psychological symptom severity and

Parkinson's disease (PD), the second most common neurodegenerative disorder, is influenced by genetic susceptibility and environmental exposures. Conditions of war, including traumatic brain injury, chronic stress, toxin exposure, malnutrition, and healthcare disruption, may significantly affect both PD risk and management. Studies have linked traumatic brain injury, post-traumatic stress disorder, and prolonged psychological stress to increased PD risk, while wartime deprivation may serve as a long-latency factor, with disease onset occurring decades later. Management of PD during conflict pr

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Why do some civilians support war despite its moral cost? Although threat perception appears to be a key psychological driver of this support, the underlying neurocognitive mechanisms remain unclear. This narrative review integrates psychological and neuroscientific evidence to delineate plausible neurocognitive pathways through which distinct threat types and temporal profiles may relate to war-supporting attitudes.
METHODS: A two-phase narrative review was conducted. Phase I systematically screened psychological literature on threat perception and war support acro

Flamethrowers are widely considered one of warfare's most controversial weapons and are capable of inflicting gruesome physical injuries and intense psychological trauma. Despite being the last of the major combatants in World War II (WWII) to develop them, the United States military quickly became the most frequent and adept operator of portable flamethrowers. This gave the U.S. military ample opportunity to observe the effects of flamethrowers on enemy soldiers. However, while most people in modern times would consider immolation by flamethrower to be an unnecessarily painful and inhumane wa

BACKGROUND: Public health research suggests that multiple factors contribute to the mental health sequalae of political violence, but the daily experiences and ongoing strategies of psychological survival during active warfare are not clearly understood. We analysed retrospective chronological diaries from Palestinian women in Gaza, occupied Palestinian territory, to explore their lives during Operation Protective Edge in 2014, when a series of aerial bombardments killed over 2000 Palestinians and left around 500 000 displaced from their homes.
METHODS: 20 Palestinian female teachers in Gaza

BACKGROUND: Craniotomies represent one of the oldest surgical procedures in human history and have evolved significantly through centuries of medical innovation and wartime necessity. From prehistoric trepanation practices to modern neurosurgical interventions, military conflicts have repeatedly accelerated advances in cranial surgery.
METHODS: This historical review examines the evolution of craniotomies across major historical periods, including prehistoric civilizations, the Renaissance, and modern warfare. Emphasis was placed on the influence of battlefield medicine, technological innovat

General George S. Patton, Jr. was a highly successful World War II battle commander whose flamboyance and many idiosyncrasies made him a focus of interest for biographers. But he was an enigmatic and complex man whose success came at a high price. Despite his prominence and celebrity, there have been minimal efforts to examine his psychological makeup so crucial to his success on the battlefield. In this essay, Patton's personal story and how it relates to the stresses of war and to his leadership of men in arms is examined. Central to his success was his early triumph over dyslexia, his abili

OBJECTIVE: The mental health consequences of political violence arise within active, dynamic processes of appraisal and coping. Understanding the psychological sequela of war is an urgent task; yet, we have little on the ground exploration of the quotidian events within and the accompanying psychological responses of the totalizing experience of war. Using a transactional-based model of stress and coping, in this study, we use a novel method-retrospective diaries-to explore the shifting, unpredictable, and traumatic nature of life during a major military operation.
METHOD: Our sample consiste

The frequency of thyrotoxicosis in peace and war time periods was compared in the same region with the same population. In one year peace and war time periods 54 and 87 cases of thyrotoxicosis were found, respectively, which indicates the increase for 62%. The results point to the conclusion that psychic trauma increases the number of patients affected by thyrotoxicosis.
