Social justice ideologies, with its emphasis on group or social identity, is permeating psychology. From its major role in the recently proposed code of ethics to its impact on therapy itself, the infusion of social justice ideologies into psychology threatens to change its very nature. This movement has a laudable goal: to combat the injustices that can impact individuals' mental health. But studies show that it also has negative impacts. This article lays out aspects of psychological research that are often ignored by psychologists, showing how the politicization of social identity and the e

INTRODUCTION: Psychologically abusive groups are characterized by systematic influence, relational control, and leadership structures that foster dependency; however, empirical data on how mental health professionals conceptualize these phenomena remain limited. The present study investigated Italian psychologists' knowledge, representations, and professional experiences regarding psychologically abusive groups.
METHODS: An online survey was administered to 232 psychologists across Italy between November 2024 and April 2025. The questionnaire explored self-assessed knowledge, information sour

Clinical evidence has pictured children of alcoholic parents as vulnerable physically, emotionally, socially, academically, and at risk for alcoholism. Review of research indicated that some of these clinical insights have been validated, but much more is needed to fill out an accurate picture for psychologists who will be asked to work with them.

A questionnaire assessing endorsement of the hostility catharsis hypothesis was developed and administered to 102 undergraduate students and 131 American and Canadian psychologists (randomly selected from 4 divisions of APA). Results indicated that students scored higher on endorsement of the catharsis hypothesis than did psychologists; females in general scored higher than males; psychologists not recently involved in research scored higher than psychologists who were so involved; and Freudian and Humanistic theorists scored higher than Behavioral theorists.

Some of the roles of a psychologist on a plastic surgery service, particularly with patients undergoing cleft palate, craniofacial, and breast reconstruction, are explored. Psychological counseling with parents of infants with birth defects is described. For patients with craniofacial anomalies team management, extensive presurgical evaluations, and a psychological support system during hospitalization are required. Patients undergoing breast reconstruction need to work through preexisting feelings and attitudes about mastectomy as well as their anticipation of results of corrective surgery. F

The current study explored whether psychologists are receiving continuing education that may assist them in providing intervention to clients with sexual issues. One hundred and five clinical and counseling psychologists completed an Internet survey. Results suggest that observational opportunities are underutilized and that more training related to sexual problems, as opposed to healthy sexuality, appears to be occurring. Participants with more continuing education were more likely to directly ask about and treat clients' sexual concerns/problems. Nonetheless, in general, participants appeare

Cancer patients face a variety of problems and undergo psychological turbulence during the clinical course of their disease. In particular, problems related to treatment, such as chemotherapy, can pose a great burden and place the patients in an unstable status, involving both anxiety and expectation related to problems faced in daily life and the unreliability of the therapeutic effects. To cope with the various psychological problems experienced by cancer patients, individual counseling, group therapy, and behavioral therapy, including progressive muscle relaxation training and autonomic tra

This article describes the extent of the problem and the medical evaluation of child maltreatment, focusing on the outpatient interdisciplinary assessment of suspected child physical and sexual abuse. Separate from their role as clinicians, the roles of the child psychologist before, during, and after the medical assessment are highlighted. The child psychologist is an important member of the interdisciplinary team who helps the team prepare for the evaluation (before), assists in screening and determining immediate psychological safety during the medical evaluation (during), and communicating

The experience of infertility can be devastating for the couple desiring a child. For women, pregnancy and motherhood are developmental milestones that are highly emphasized by our culture. This paper will explain psychological issues in infertility, including evaluation and intervention. Specific issues such as privacy and disclosure, and deciding when to end infertility treatment, will also be discussed. A psychologist, or other mental health professional on the health care team, is essential to treatment of the biopsychosocial nature of infertility.

The data presented suggest that general practitioners would be likely to refer a large number of patients with diverse problems to clinical psychologists working in health centres. Compared with a centrally organized clinical psychology service, the work of the primary care psychologist is likely to offer the following advantages:1. Access to psychological help for patients with a need for such help, but who could not attend a central clinic owing to problems associated with travel, work, physical disability, or even a presenting problem such as agoraphobia.2. Greater continuity of care of pat

Given the prevalence of burnout among healthcare professionals and the drastic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on mental health services, the primary objective of this study was to examine the characteristics of burnout for pediatric psychologists in clinical practice. Additional objectives included identifying personal and systemic factors associated with burnout and comparing burnout factors between early-career (ECP) and mid-/senior-career pediatric psychologists. Participants included 92 active members of the American Psychological Association (APA) Division 54-Society of Pediatric Psychol

BACKGROUND: The ratio of psychologists to the population is vastly lower in rural communities compared to urban areas, and more clinicians are critically needed in rural Australia. Other health disciplines have implemented generalist frameworks and training to encourage and prepare clinicians to remain in rural practice. Research often references rural psychology practice in conjunction with the broader allied health discipline.
OBJECTIVE: Though prior research has identified skills needed for rural psychology practice, further research is needed to expand and update the current understanding

Previous research has investigated how psychologists identify dyslexia in school-aged children. However, it is presently unclear how psychologists diagnose dyslexia in adults. This study aimed to explore psychologists' understandings and experiences in how they assess adults for dyslexia. Nine psychologists in Australia were recruited from professional associations and interviewed using a semi-structured schedule. After member checks, transcripts were analysed using reflexive thematic analysis. The results suggested that participants' assessment practices with adults were similar to those used

Although ageism is widely cited as a problem in mental health delivery, it is unknown whether practitioner biases are related to factors such as physical health. A randomly drawn national sample of experienced practicing doctoral-level psychologists (N = 371) responded to detailed vignettes of a client presenting with symptoms of depression, in which age (35 years or 70 years) and health (unremarkable or poor) were manipulated. Respondents completed ratings involving professional and interpersonal judgments about the hypothetical client. Results revealed some evidence for age bias, but much st

Clinical psychologists are core members of UK cleft services. This paper outlines the variety of ways in which clinical psychologists work across the lifespan to promote the psychological wellbeing of those born with a cleft and their families. In the context of dental or orthodontic treatment, this involves a combination of early intervention and advice, psychological assessment or specialist psychological therapy for individuals experiencing dental anxiety or anxiety regarding the appearance of their teeth. This paper therefore aims to highlight the varying roles which clinical psychologists

Adolescent Medicine addresses the health care of adolescents, young adults, and their families. Adolescent psychology constitutes an important part. The COVID-19 pandemic has given insight into adolescent needs, bringing the focus on prevention rather than mere correction. One needs to factor in the unique aspects of adolescence, their need to impress peers and gain acceptance, and their unique information processing, not calculating trade-offs between risk and reward the way adults might, in a linear, rational, logical, and verbal manner. The article focuses on the need for collaborative trai

The objective of this study was to compare the perspectives of psychiatrists, psychologists, and theologians on schizophrenia, depression, anxiety, and antisocial personality disorder. A cross-sectional research design was utilized, involving a random sample selected from the official registries of these professionals. The findings revealed significant differences in how these groups conceptualize mental disorders. The preferred concepts varied depending on the specific disorder. For instance, when it came to schizophrenia, psychiatrists showed a greater inclination towards the psychodynamic c

Patients with pelvic floor disorders may experience a wide range of symptoms affecting one or more compartments of the pelvic floor (anterior/urinary, apical/reproductive, and posterior/gastrointestinal). Disorders affecting the pelvic organs (e.g., endometriosis, IBS), nerves, and supportive musculature (e.g., pelvic floor dysfunction, muscle trauma) often co-occur. As a result, individuals with one or more of these conditions may fluctuate between or simultaneously experience symptoms such as pelvic pain, urinary frequency/urgency/incontinence, sexual dysfunction, and gastrointestinal proble
