Developmental approach to the psychology of craniofacial anomalies.

This article outlines a developmental perspective on psychosocial maladjustment and its implications for the psychological study and treatment of individuals with craniofacial anomalies. A developmental theory of attachment is described and used to formulate hypotheses about the developing parent-child relationship during the first 5 years of life and its influence on the child's subsequent social and emotional growth. Preliminary research involving infants with clefts and other craniofacial anomalies is reviewed with respect to hypothesized points of vulnerability in the attachment process. T

The interface between genetics and psychology: lessons from developmental dyslexia.

Developmental dyslexia runs in families, and twin studies have confirmed that there is a substantial genetic contribution to poor reading. The way in which discoveries in molecular genetics are reported can be misleading, encouraging us to think that there are specific genes that might be used to screen for disorder. However, dyslexia is not a classic Mendelian disorder that is caused by a mutation in a single gene. Rather, like many other common disorders, it appears to involve combined effects of many genes and environmental factors, each of which has a small influence, possibly supplemented

Developmental cognitive genetics: how psychology can inform genetics and vice versa.

Developmental neuropsychology is concerned with uncovering the underlying basis of developmental disorders such as specific language impairment (SLI), developmental dyslexia, and autistic disorder. Twin and family studies indicate that genetic influences play an important part in the aetiology of all of these disorders, yet progress in identifying genes has been slow. One way forward is to cut loose from conventional clinical criteria for diagnosing disorders and to focus instead on measures of underlying cognitive mechanisms. Psychology can inform genetics by clarifying what the key dimension

Social learning from media: The need for a culturally diachronic developmental psychology.

Since the proliferation of television sets into households began over half a century ago there has been widespread interest in the impact that viewing has on young children's development. Such interest has grown with the increasing availability of smart phones and tablets. In this review we examine the literature documenting human social learning and how this learning is impacted when the instructing agent appears on a screen instead of face-to-face. We then explore the shifting nature of screen-based media, with a focus on the increasingly socio-normative manner information is portrayed. We d

Psychological resources of adults with developmental dyslexia.

The aim of our study was to describe specific psychological resources of adults with developmental dyslexia and compare them with psychological resources of adults without developmental dyslexia. Potential differences were analyzed in visual-spatial, creative, and motivational abilities. No evidence was found for either creative, or visuospatial superiority in adults with developmental dyslexia. The results suggest, however, that visual-spatial processing of nonverbal material by adults with developmental dyslexia allows them to efficiently execute tasks that are based on sequential material.

Missing developmental and sociocultural perspectives: Comment on the "Psychology of Terrorism" special issue (2017).

Two critical perspectives were missing from the special issue entitled "Psychology of Terrorism": developmental and sociocultural. From a developmental point of view, the fact that most individuals who engage in terrorist groups or terroristic acts are young men is critically important. Perspectives from adolescent development, neuroscience, and social psychology can shed light on why this is the case. In addition, sociocultural perspectives are needed to answer important community-level questions, such as why some communities are more prone to having youth recruited for terrorism than others.

Childhood developmental disorders: an academic and clinical convergence point for psychiatry, neurology, psychology and pediatrics.

BACKGROUND: Significant advances in understanding brain development and behavior have not been accompanied by revisions of traditional academic structure. Disciplinary isolation and a lack of meaningful interdisciplinary opportunities are persistent barriers in academic medicine. To enhance clinical practice, research, and training for the next generation, academic centers will need to take bold steps that challenge traditional departmental boundaries. Such change is not only desirable but, in fact, necessary to bring about a truly innovative and more effective approach to treating disorders o

Developmental psychologies in the Roman world: Change and continuity.

A common view among ancient historians about Roman attentiveness to children's psychological development needs reconsideration. The view holds that Romans ignored children's cognitive ontogeny, perceiving early childhood as a largely undifferentiated life stage. A separate but related issue is the problematic claim that Roman childhood was entirely a matter of social construction. I present evidence from over four hundred years of Roman writing to make three points against Roman neglect of children and radical social construction. First, a consensus (granted our limited number of sources) abou

Children with Apert syndrome: developmental and psychologic considerations.

Innovations in craniofacial surgery have enabled children with Apert syndrome to achieve their full potential by maximizing their opportunities for intellectual growth, physical competence, and social acceptance. However, at each developmental phase they are confronted with different challenges to their emotional and social adaptation that must be overcome. Children with Apert syndrome continue to face erroneous assumptions of mental retardation and social stigmatization because of their appearance. Families and medical care providers play a critical role in fostering their adjustment and supp

Developmental instability, fluctuating asymmetry, and human psychological science.

Developmental instability (DI) is an individual's inability to produce a specific developmental outcome under a given set of conditions, generally thought to result from random perturbations experienced during development. Fluctuating asymmetry (FA) - asymmetry on bilateral features that, on average, are symmetrical (or asymmetry deviating from that arising from design) - has been used to measure DI. Dating to half a century ago, and accelerating in the past three decades, psychological researchers have examined associations between FA (typically measured on bodily or facial features) and a ho

Psychological and Developmental Correlates of Paraphilic and Normophilic Sexual Interests.

The classification of sexual fantasies and behaviors (here referred to as 'sexual interests') has historically been divided into 'paraphilic' and 'normophilic'. However, studies on paraphilic interests are often limited to clinical or forensic samples and normophilic interests are rarely assessed in tandem. Previous research has found mixed results for psychological and other correlates of sexual interests, potentially due to inconsistency in operationalism and measurement of fantasies and behaviors. The aim of the current study was to quantify correlates of sexual interests via the Sexual Fan

The relation of abuse to physical and psychological health in adults with developmental disabilities.

BACKGROUND: People with developmental disabilities are at disproportionately high risk of abuse. Although considerable evidence exists on the health-related consequences of abuse in the general population, little is known about those consequences in people with developmental disabilities. OBJECTIVE: To examine the relation of abuse with psychological and physical health outcomes in adults with developmental disabilities. METHODS: We used an accessible audio computer-assisted self-interview to collect anonymous data on demographic and disability characteristics, childhood and adult abuse expe

Glucose metabolic responses to psychological stress vary across developmental stages in mice.

Cyclic vomiting syndrome (CVS) with acetonemia is a representative psychosomatic disorder triggered by psychological stress. In most cases, patients experience symptoms of ketoacidosis, including vomiting during childhood, which typically resolve by approximately 10 years of age. Although abnormal activation of the glucose metabolic response associated with stress has been suggested to be involved in its onset, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. In this study, we established a mouse model of stress-induced glycogen depletion and ketosis observed in CVS with acetonemia. We compared the g

Developmental process in diffuse psychological/neuropsychiatric manifestations of neuropsychiatric systemic lupus erythematosus.

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) involves excessive autoimmune reactions, with pathogenesis characterized by autoantibody production. Although the specific mechanism underlying the development of neuropsychiatric syndromes in SLE (NPSLE) is still unclear, recent studies indicate the involvement of autoimmune pathophysiology. We previously identified the presence of anti-N-methyl-d-aspartate receptor subunit GluN2 antibody (anti-GluN2) as a functional autoantibody which is able to impair neurons and is essential for the diagnosis of diffuse psychiatric/neuropsychological syndromes in NPSLE (d

Psychological perspective on human developmental stability and fluctuating asymmetry: sources, applications and implications.

In recent years researchers from diverse disciplines in the life sciences have turned their attention to the issue of developmental stability in the organism. Their key measure, fluctuating asymmetry (FA), is defined as the random, stress-induced deviations from perfect symmetry that develop during the development of bilaterally symmetrical traits. This is regarded as a promising measure of the stress experienced by individuals during their development, as well as the interaction between genetic and environmental forces which affect that development. FA also sheds light on several domains with
