Perimetry and visual psychophysics.

Patterns of visual loss are the key to anatomic localization. Strictly monocular defects map to the prechiasmal sensory visual system. Bitemporal hemianopia is the signature of damage to the optic chiasm. Incongruous homonymous hemianopia points to an optic tract lesion. The closer a lesion gets to the occipital cortex, the more congruous or similar are the patterns of homonymous hemianopia. Understanding these patterns will add an important dimension to the clinician's localization arsenal. Perimetry is the quantitation of the visual field. This is done with a perimeter and usually involves e

Odor psychophysics in vertebrates.

The methods used to obtain psychophysical data on the nasal chemosensory systems of all classes of vertebrates are critically reviewed and a summary of the available data on their odor detection and discrimination abilities is provided. Although there are reliable methods for training at least one member of each class to respond differentially to the presence or absence of odor stimuli, very little is known about the limits of the capacity of any of the three major nasal chemosensory systems (olfactory, vomeronasal and trigeminal) to detect pure compounds. Furthermore, studies in which rigorou

[Application of psychophysics to neurology].

Although psychophysics has already been used in many neurological evaluations including the visual and hearing tests, the use of psychophysics has been limited to the evaluation of sensory disorders. In this review paper, however, the author introduced recent attempts to apply psychophysics to the evaluation of higher cognitive functions such as perception of scenes and facial expressions. Psychophysics was also used to measure visual hypersensitivity in a patient with migraine. The benefits of the use of psychophysics in neurological and neuropsychological settings would be as follows. (1) We

Robust and Efficient Online Auditory Psychophysics.

Most human auditory psychophysics research has historically been conducted in carefully controlled environments with calibrated audio equipment, and over potentially hours of repetitive testing with expert listeners. Here, we operationally define such conditions as having high 'auditory hygiene'. From this perspective, conducting auditory psychophysical paradigms online presents a serious challenge, in that results may hinge on absolute sound presentation level, reliably estimated perceptual thresholds, low and controlled background noise levels, and sustained motivation and attention. We intr

The psychophysics of roughness applied to dysphonic voice.

Roughness is a sound quality that has been related to the amplitude modulation characteristics of the acoustic stimulus. Roughness also is considered one of the primary elements of voice quality associated with natural variations across normal voices and is a salient feature of many dysphonic voices. It is known that the roughness of tonal stimuli is dependent on the frequency and depth of amplitude modulation and on the carrier frequency. Here, it is determined if similar dependencies exist for voiced speech stimuli. Knowledge of such dependencies can lead to a better understanding of the aco

The psychophysics of transition to long term care.

More than a decade after the publication of To Err Is Human, cognitive error remains a mystery to physicians. Competent and conscientious physicians rarely recall making a single cognitive error, yet this must be central to the explanation for inappropriate physician nonadherence to evidence-based guidelines. Published information regarding cognitive error in the medical literature is scarce and widely scattered. We do know that cognitive error is induced by complexity, duress, and uncertainty, conditions that regularly confront long term care physicians when they assume care of a new patient

Psychophysics and blindsight: the devil is in the detail.

Understanding how guessing, cueing, and response bias interact with residual sensitivity is key to interpreting correctly the behavioral responses that are taken as measures of visual performance and awareness in blindsight. It is crucial for determining the extent to which post-lesion recovery of function is due to changes in decisional processes, as opposed to improved sensitivity due to reorganization of early visual circuitry.

The psychophysics of glaucoma: improving the structure/function relationship.

Perimetry of some kind remains an important tool in the detection, diagnosis and monitoring of glaucomatous damage to the visual pathway. However, recent studies have served to reinforce the suspicion that conventional perimetry does not possess the sensitivity to detect the earliest signs of functional loss resulting from glaucoma. The relationship between differential light threshold and ganglion cell loss is extremely weak and, in the early stages of glaucoma, non-existent. Alternative, more novel perimetric techniques seem to offer promise of better detectability for early loss by claiming

Olfactory receptors: transduction, diversity, human psychophysics and genome analysis.

The emerging understanding of the molecular basis of olfactory mechanisms allows one to answer some long-standing questions regarding the complex recognition machinery involved. The ability of the olfactory system to detect chemicals at sub-nanomolar concentrations is explained by a plethora of amplification devices, including the coupling of receptors to second messenger generation through GTP-binding proteins. Specificity and selectivity may be understood in terms of a diverse repertoire of olfactory receptors of the seven-transmembrane-domain receptor superfamily, which are probably dispose

Beyond Psychophysics: A Physiological Marker of Proprioceptive Function After Stroke.

Proprioceptive input is essential for motor control, yet clinical assessment of proprioceptive deficits relies largely on psychophysical tests that depend on self-report, are vulnerable to cognitive interference and bias, and probe conscious aspects of sensation. In this proof-of-concept study, we propose the automatic muscular response to passive limb displacement-the placing response-as a complementary, more objective marker of proprioceptive adequacy. Using surface electromyography (EMG) from the anterior and posterior deltoid during shoulder movements, we first confirm that placing is a ge

Unrestrained and hedonically motivated mouse psychophysics compatible with wireless optogenetic modulation.

BACKGROUND: Visual neuroscience research has adopted the mouse as one of its primary animal models. Collection of perceptually driven behavior in these mice often involves head fixation to present the visual stimulus under controlled conditions and water restriction to motivate responses. However, both head fixation and water restriction can induce physiological stress. NEW METHOD: Here, we adapted a popular open-source two-alternative-forced-choice (2AFC) visual psychophysics apparatus to allow unrestrained mice to maintain consistent stimulus viewing position while performing trials for hed

Psychophysical aspects of hidradenitis suppurativa.

Hidradenitis suppurativa is a recurrent, debilitating suppurative skin disease. The symptoms are much more than just physical, but studies of its impact on patients' psychological state and related quality of life are very limited. The current study was conducted with a group of 54 patients, aged 16-65 years, who had an active, but stable, course of hidradenitis suppurativa. The aim of the study was to determine the influence of hidradenitis suppurativa on a broad spectrum of psychophysical factors. Assessment was carried out using several questionnaires, which revealed the following mean scor

Neuropathic pain in ankylosing spondylitis: a psychophysics and brain imaging study.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether there is a neuropathic component in ankylosing spondylitis (AS) back pain and to delineate gray matter brain abnormalities associated with AS. METHODS: Seventeen patients with back pain secondary to AS who were not receiving biologic agents and 17 age- and sex-matched healthy controls consented to participate in the study and were assessed using the painDETECT instrument (scores of ≤12 indicating low probability of neuropathic pain) and the McGill Pain Questionnaire. Mechanical and thermal thresholds were determined in all subjects, and brain gray matter was as

The mechanism of physiological height vertigo. I. Theoretical approach and psychophysics.

A theory is presented supporting a geometrical explanation of physiological height vertigo as a 'distance vertigo' created by visual destabilization of posture when the distance between the observer and visible stationary contrasts becomes critically large. Though height vertigo is generally regarded as a psychopathological process, we hypothesize that it might instead result from an intersensory mismatch when visual information is at variance with vestibular and proprioceptive inputs. Psychophysical experiments confirming the hypothesis revealed that: 1) height vertigo is clearly related to b

[Effect of astemizole on psychophysical performance].

Within four partial clinical trials of Astemizole versus placebo it has been proved, that no differences regarding the driving ability and the safe operation of machinery could be detected. Furthermore it could be observed, that there was no disadvantageous efficacy concerning subjective behaviour and that Astemizole did not potentiate Diazepam and alcohol.

Psychophysics of neon color spreading: Chromatic and temporal factors are not limiting.

Neon color spreading (NCS) is an illusory color phenomenon that provides a dramatic example of surface completion and filling-in. Numerous studies have varied both spatial and temporal aspects of the neon-generating stimulus to explore variations in the strength of the effect. Here, we take a novel, parametric, low-level psychophysical approach to studying NCS in two experiments. In Experiment 1, we test the ability of both cone-isolating and equiluminant stimuli to generate neon color spreading for both increments and decrements in cone modulations. As expected, sensitivity was low to S(hort-

Psychophysics and neurophysiology of repetition noise processing in a vertebrate auditory system.

The psychophysics and neurophysiology of repetition noise (RN) processing was studied in the goldfish. RN is the sum of a noise waveform with its delayed (by T s) repetition, which may be attenuated (by A dB), and inverted relative to the undelayed signal. Such a signal has a periodic spectrum with peaks separated by 1/T Hz, and a prominence in its autocorrelation function at T s. In usual environments, RN contains information about sound-reflecting surfaces. Delays in the range of 0.5-20 ms create pitch sensations in man. Psychophysical experiments using classical respiratory conditioning inv

A mathematical framework for probabilistic choice based on information theory and psychophysics.

Risky decision-making (e.g. reward dependency) has been associated with substance abuse, psychopathy and pathological gambling; conversely, marked sensitivity to risk and uncertainty have been observed in anxiety disorder patients. In economic decision theory, probability and uncertainty have been dissociated. Frank Knight defined uncertainty as loss of information on the probability distribution of outcomes for choices (i.e., unpredictability), which is referred to as Knightian uncertainty (also as ambiguity). However, even when the probability distribution of outcomes is known, there are dif
