Psychosocial perspective on the integration of individuals deprived of liberty: a lexicometric analysis.

OBJECTIVE: While some aspects of the prison system are documented, the psychosocial experiences of individuals during incarceration and their reintegration after release remain relatively underexamined and poorly understood by the broader public. METHODS: This qualitative research explores the perceptions of 16 former people deprived of liberty from Gran Canaria, Spain, focusing on their reintegration process. Semi-structured interviews provided direct and personal insights, analyzed using IRAMuTeQ software to identify key themes. Two main subcorpora emerged: one addressing the experiences wit

Mirror image of environmental deprivation: severe childhood obesity of psychosocial origin.

We report 12 children with severe obesity in very early childhood who had no evidence of organic causes for their obesity and whose families evidenced psychosocial dysfunction comparable to that often seen in growth failure of psychosocial origin. Features seen include family disorganization, separation of mother and child, displacement of child care to others, maternal depression, denial of the growth abnormality, hostility towards health care providers, and inconsistent medical follow-up. In all cases, parental limit setting was impaired. We suggest that this condition should be called "seve

Romania's Abandoned Children: The Effects of Early Profound Psychosocial Deprivation on the Course of Human Development.

Understanding the impact that early psychosocial neglect has on the course of human development has implications for the millions of children around the world who are living in contexts of adversity. In the US, approximately 76% of cases reported to child protective services involve neglect; world-wide, there are more than 150 million orphaned or abandoned children, including 10.5 million orphaned because of COVID-19. In much of the world, children without primary caregivers are reared in institutional settings. We review two decades of research based on the only randomized controlled trial of

Early caregiving quality predicts consistency of competent functioning from middle childhood to adolescence following early psychosocial deprivation.

Adverse developmental outcomes for some children following institutional care are well established. Removal from institutional care and placement into families can promote recovery. However, little is known about how positive outcomes are sustained across adolescence among children with histories of severe deprivation. The present study examined the caregiving conditions that are associated with attaining and maintaining competent functioning (i.e., outcomes within typical levels) from middle childhood to adolescence following exposure to early institutional care. The participants included chi

[Stress-induced hyperalgesia (SIH) as a consequence of emotional deprivation and psychosocial traumatization in childhood : Implications for the treatment of chronic pain].

It is now widely recognized that in many chronic pain syndromes the intensity and severity of individually perceived pain does not correlate consistently with the degree of peripheral nervous system tissue damage or with the intensity of primary afferent or spinal nociceptive neurone activity. In particular, stress and anxiety exert modulatory influences on pain depending on the nature, duration and intensity of the stressor and developmental influences on the maturation of the stress as well as the pain system. In some chronic pain syndromes, e. g. fibromyalgia, TMD or somatoform disorders, n

Sensorimotor gating characteristics of violent men with comorbid psychosis and dissocial personality disorder: Relationship with antisocial traits and psychosocial deprivation.

Evidence suggests violence amongst those with psychosis is not aetiologically homogeneous, and that a large proportion of those who engage in violent behaviour have a comorbid antisocial personality disorder. Initial investigations indicate that this subgroup has distinct historical and neuropsychological characteristics, which may indicate diverse treatment needs. This study investigated sensorimotor gating characteristics of violent men with diagnoses of both psychosis and dissocial personality disorder (DPD) (n=21) relative to violent men with psychosis alone (n=12), DPD alone (n=14) and he

Severe psychosocial deprivation in early childhood is associated with increased DNA methylation across a region spanning the transcription start site of CYP2E1.

Exposure to adverse rearing environments including institutional deprivation and severe childhood abuse is associated with an increased risk for mental and physical health problems across the lifespan. Although the mechanisms mediating these effects are not known, recent work in rodent models suggests that epigenetic processes may be involved. We studied the impact of severe early-life adversity on epigenetic variation in a sample of adolescents adopted from the severely depriving orphanages of the Romanian communist era in the 1980s. We quantified buccal cell DNA methylation at ~400 000 sites

Deprivation and poor psychosocial support are key determinants of late antenatal presentation and poor fetal outcomes--a combined retrospective and prospective study.

BACKGROUND: Published guidelines emphasise the need for early antenatal care to promote maternal and neonatal health. Inadequate engagement with antenatal care is associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes including maternal death. The factors that influence the uptake and utilisation of maternity care services are poorly understood. We retrospectively explore a large maternity database of births in a large referral UK hospital to capture the socio-demographic factors that influence late pregnancy booking, and then prospectively compare the stress and social support status of consenting early

Sociodemographic and psychosocial correlates of smoking-induced deprivation and its effect on quitting: findings from the International Tobacco Control Policy Evaluation Survey.

AIMS: To determine the prevalence and characteristics of smokers who experience smoking-induced deprivation (SID), and to examine its effect on quit attempts, relapse and cessation. METHODS: Waves 2 and 3 (2003-5) of the International Tobacco Control Policy Evaluation Survey were used, which is a prospective study of a cohort of smokers in the US, Canada, UK and Australia. SID was measured with the question "In the last six months, have you spent money on cigarettes that you knew would be better spent on household essentials like food?" A total of 7802 smokers participated in the survey in wa

The effects of severe psychosocial deprivation and foster care intervention on cognitive development at 8 years of age: findings from the Bucharest Early Intervention Project.

BACKGROUND: Previous reports from the Bucharest Early Intervention Project suggested that children removed from institutions and placed into intervention displayed gains in IQ relative to children randomized to remain in institutional care. METHOD: The current report presents data from the 8-year follow-up of these children. One hundred and three of the original 136 children in the study were tested with the WISC IV. RESULTS: Results reveal continued benefit from the intervention even though many of the children in both the intervention and control groups were no longer residing in their ini

Effects on the behavior of infant common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus) of separation from caregivers and of drug-induced reduction in caregiver responsiveness.

The effects of separating 4-week-old twin marmosets for 8 days from their families are compared with the effects of leaving 4-week-old infants with their families, but reducing the responsiveness of their caregivers for 8 days by administration of the tranquilizer fluphenazine decanoate. Both treatments reduce infant mobility, abolish play, and increase the time that infants spend with each other. During the period after the termination of the treatment, both treatment groups continue to play and move less than controls, and try to climb onto the mothers more frequently. These results are cons

Psychosocial implications of nocturnal enuresis.

Primary nocturnal enuresis (PNE), a biobehavioral problem affecting approximately 5,000,000 children in the United States, is among the most bothersome and frustrating disorders of childhood. Negative psychosocial consequences are common, secondary to the impact of enuresis on family members and others. The enuretic child may be at increased risk for emotional or even physical abuse from family members and may experience stress related to fear of detection by peers. These factors contribute to the loss of self-esteem that the enuretic child often experiences. Fortunately, a number of treatment

Lower anterior cingulate volume in seriously violent men with antisocial personality disorder or schizophrenia and a history of childhood abuse.

OBJECTIVE: Antisocial personality disorder (ASPD) and schizophrenia, as well as childhood abuse, are associated with violent behaviour and show marked volumetric reduction in the anterior cingulate (AC), a brain region implicated in regulation of violence through its involvement in decision making, empathy, impulse control, and emotion regulation. The present study examined, for the first time to the authors' knowledge, the grey matter volume of the AC in relation to seriously violent behaviour and childhood psychosocial deprivation (including physical and sexual abuse) in the context of a men
