Psychosocial functioning in personality disorders.

The present paper takes a broad perspective on the psychosocial functioning in adult patients with personality disorders. We start with a working definition, then we report on psychosocial functioning in personality disorders from both categorical and dimensional perspectives of personality disorder. We add a section on assessment tools which may be used in this context. We then address the question of how problematic psychosocial functioning may be addressed in psychotherapy and other treatment contexts, when it comes to supporting the person's move towards sustained recovery. We add a lived

Psychosocial functioning among bipolar youth.

BACKGROUND: Evidence indicates that children and adolescents with bipolar disorder (BP) experience significant functional impairment. However, little is known about the association between psychosocial functioning and episodes of illness, demographic, and clinical variables in this population. METHODS: Subjects included 446 patients aged 7 to 17 diagnosed with DSM-IV bipolar disorder via the K-SADS for the Course and Outcome of Bipolar Youth (COBY) study. The Psychosocial Functioning Schedule of the Adolescent Longitudinal Interval Follow-Up Assessment (A-LIFE) was administered at study intak

Resilience and psychosocial functioning in schizotypy.

Understanding resilience has expanded our knowledge of certain risk and protective factors regarding the development of different forms of psychopathology. Particularly, a focus on resilience can be used to implement interventions and to target specific behaviors in hopes of mitigating the onset of a disorder or to alleviate symptoms. Less research on resilience has been done with individuals with psychosis, particularly schizophrenia spectrum disorders. Only 1 previous study has targeted individuals assessed for schizotypy. The current study examined associations between resilience and schizo

Psychosocial functioning of transsexuals in Belgium.

Male-to-female (M-F) transsexuals differ consistently from female-to-male (F-M) transsexuals in their sociodemographic characteristics, cross-gender and sexual history and the degree to which personality disorder is concomitant to their transsexuality. As a group, female-to-male transsexuals are more homogeneous. Both groups are impaired in their mental functioning, but the male-to-female population is more mentally disordered. In a comparison between Dutch transsexuals and their Belgian counterparts, the latter were shown to have more mental problems.

Evaluating psychosocial functioning in dental patients.

In order to make a reliable diagnosis and offer appropriate treatment, it is important that the dentist is aware of the role played by psychosocial factors in the origin and persistence of dental problems and has the ability to recognise their importance in the patient's overall presentation. This paper is an attempt to improve dentist's awareness of psychosocial issues and recognition of possible psychological problems in general dental practice. It focuses on directions for the gathering of information on patients through careful assessment prior to dental examination, covering patients biol

Psychosocial and family functioning in spina bifida.

A developmentally oriented bio-neuropsychosocial model is introduced to explain the variation in family functioning and psychosocial adjustment in youth and young adults with spina bifida (SB). Research on the family functioning and psychosocial adjustment of individuals with SB is reviewed. The findings of past research on families of youth with SB support a resilience-disruption view of family functioning. That is, the presence of a child with SB disrupts normative family functioning but many families adapt to such disruption and exhibit considerable resilience in the face of adversity. Pare

Impact of trimethylaminuria on daily psychosocial functioning.

BACKGROUND: Trimethylaminuria (TMAU) (OMIM #602079) is a rare inherited metabolic condition. TMAU is associated with decreased hepatic trimethylamine N-oxidation, which leads to an excess of the volatile trimethylamine (TMA) instead of substrate conversion to trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO). TMA is a tertiary amine derived from the enterobacterial metabolism of precursors such as choline and phosphatidylcholine present in the diet, and is also a bacterial metabolite of TMAO, a normal constituent of saltwater fish. When the involved enzyme flavin mono-oxygenase 3 is deficient, TMA builds up and i

Mild mental retardation: psychosocial functioning in adulthood.

BACKGROUND: Evidence on the adult adaptation of individuals with mild mental retardation (MMR) is sparse, and knowledge of the factors associated with more and less successful functioning in MMR samples yet more limited. METHOD: Prospective data from the National Child Development Study were used to examine social circumstances and psychosocial functioning in adulthood in individuals with MMR and in a non-retarded comparison group. RESULTS: For many individuals with MMR, living circumstances and social conditions in adulthood were poor and potential stressors high. Self-reports of psychologi

Psychosocial functioning in schoolchildren with recurrent headaches.

The psychosocial functioning of 113 schoolchildren (8 to 15 years old) reporting headaches at least once a month was compared to a group of headache-free control subjects matched for sex and age. Thirteen percent of the headache sufferers had migraine headaches, 28% had episodic tension-type headaches, 30% had chronic tension-type headaches, and 29% had migraine coexisting with tension-type headaches. Overall, the headache sufferers experienced more somatic complaints, stress, and psychological symptoms, in addition to being absent from school (due to illness), more often and reported fewer ca

Psychosocial functioning in the Ehlers-Danlos syndrome.

Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) is a group of related genetic disorders of connective tissue presenting with joint hypermobility, skin extensibility, and tissue fragility. Although the pathophysiology of EDS is increasingly understood, the psychosocial effects of having EDS have not been examined. We psychologically tested and interviewed 41 adults and 7 children with EDS. Anxiety, depression, anger, and interpersonal concerns were significantly elevated, varying from one-quarter to one-third of patients; over 70% had a history of some mental health care use. Psychological difficulties appear to

Psychosocial functioning of patients after endoscopic thoracic sympathectomy.

OBJECTIVE: Endoscopic thoracic sympathectomy is considered the treatment modality of choice for patients with disabling hyperhidrosis. However, the psychosocial impact of the intervention has not been systematically studied in American samples before and after sympathectomy. It is expected that the reduction of symptoms is associated with improved psychosocial functioning and quality of life. The aim of this study was to examine psychosocial functioning in patients with hyperhidrosis undergoing thoracic sympathectomy. METHODS: Patients with hyperhidrosis undergoing evaluation for sympathectom

Psychosocial functioning needs attention in adolescent eating disorders.

We studied the differences in psychosocial functioning in the early stages of adolescent anorexia nervosa (AN) and bulimia nervosa (BN). The study group comprised 57 adolescent eating disorder (ED) outpatients (girls). Psychosocial functioning was evaluated by GAF (Global Assessment of Functioning), and by Morgan-Russell psychosocial subscales. GAF scores were very low in both AN and BN. On the Morgan-Russell subscales, bulimics reported more unsatisfactory relationships with family and impairment in work/school. Anorectics tended to have more difficulties in emancipation from family and in so

What predicts psychosocial functioning in borderline personality disorder? Investigating the association with reflective functioning.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to investigate factors associated with functioning in participants with and without borderline personality disorder (BPD). In particular, we were interested whether mentalizing and related social cognitive capacities, as factors of internal functioning, are important in predicting psychosocial functioning, in addition to other psychopathological and sociodemographic factors. METHOD: This is a cross-sectional study with N = 53 right-handed females with and without BPD, without significant differences in age, IQ, and socioeconomic status, who completed semi

Psychosocial functioning in adolescent psychiatric patients: a prospective study on changes in psychosocial functioning among severely and moderately impaired adolescent out-patients.

Changes in psychosocial functioning during out-patient treatment among 73 adolescent male and 100 female subjects, aged 12 to 19 years, were studied. The mean number of total treatment sessions was 15 sessions among the severely impaired and 14 sessions among the moderately impaired patients. The level of psychosocial functioning improved among the severely impaired (Global Assessment Scale (GAS) at treatment entry 3.9 vs. 4.7 at the last session, 95% CI, -1.085 to -0.577) and the moderately impaired patients (GAS 5.5 vs. 6.0, 95% CI, -0.682 to -0.355). The improvement was highly dependent on

Competing Models of Personality Disorder: Relations With Psychosocial Functioning.

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th Edition (DSM-5; American Psychiatric Association, 2013), includes 10 categorical personality disorders (PD) in Section II (Section II PD) and a dimensional alternative model of PD (AMPD) in Section III. We compared the two models in explaining concurrent psychosocial functioning levels in psychiatric outpatients and community residents screened as at risk for PD pathology (N = 600). The AMPD's fully dimensional form showed stronger associations with psychosocial difficulties and explained more of their variance compared with the ca

Symptom domains and psychosocial functioning in borderline personality disorder.

BACKGROUND: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is often characterized by severe functional impairment, even after a decrease in symptoms. A comprehensive understanding of psychosocial functioning in BPD is necessary to tailor treatment offer, which should address relevant aspects of daily life. The aims of the present study are to (1) conduct a cross-sectional comparison of functioning of a group with BPD and a non-BPD clinical comparison group at service entry, and to (2) assess the relationship between intensity of BPD symptom domains and psychosocial functioning. METHODS: The sample con
