There are different types of psychotherapy for anxiety, depression, and personality disorders with comparable effect. This review describes the theory, methods, and evidence of psychodynamic short-term therapy. After a description of nuances in the dominant tendencies, the common elements of the therapy are summarised. The therapeutic question is which treatment works best for which patient under which circumstances. In this context, psychodynamic short-term therapy must be part of a continuum of treatment options, adapted to the patients' personal characteristics, needs, and wishes.

This case report details the treatment of a longtime psychodynamic psychotherapy patient, with a particular focus on a ketamine-assisted psychotherapy (KAP) session, and how the progress achieved during this session compares with the literature on KAP. The patient is a 54-year-old woman with a history of multiple traumas, including sexual assault and life-threatening physical injuries, as well as a recent diagnosis of primary lateral sclerosis (PLS). For most of her life, she relied on extreme idealization of important people in her life as her primary defense mechanism, helping her to maintai

In general, psychodynamic psychotherapy is not considered evidence-based treatment. This review includes recent meta-analyses and review papers. We conclude that evidence in favour of psychodynamic psychotherapy exists for unipolar depression, panic anxiety with and without agoraphobia, social phobia, generalised anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder. For complex mental conditions, long-term psychodynamic psychotherapy shows greater effect than no treatment, standard treatment and short-term psychotherapy. Psychodynamic psychotherapy can be recommended for treatment of specific psychiatri

The repetition compulsion-the propensity to repeat formative early life experiences, for good or ill-is one of psychoanalysis's most important contributions to the understanding of human nature. However, its broader applications to psychodynamic psychiatry and psychotherapy have received little attention. In fact, it is a concept widely applicable to the understanding and treatment of psychiatric disorders, since maladaptive or self-defeating repetitions are the stuff of psychopathology. This article will discuss the repetition compulsion as a core concept of psychodynamic psychiatry. Principl

Psychoanalytic approaches, although still extensively used by practitioners, have been marginalized in treatment guidelines partly because of limited efficacy research. In recent years, several manualized psychodynamic approaches have been developed that target specific problems or disorders, which can be referred to generally as problem-focused psychodynamic psychotherapies. These treatments offer modified psychodynamic techniques to address dynamics associated with particular disorders and can be used for systematic outcome studies. For example, one of these, panic-focused psychodynamic psyc

Evidence of the effect of psychodynamic psychotherapy (PDT) has been called into question. Thus, an updated review of the effect of short-term and long-term PDT (STPP and LTPP) for anxiety, depression and personality disorders seems necessary. A systematic search of randomized controlled studies of PDT published from January 2000 to May 2016 was conducted, and we found 57 single studies and 13 meta-analyses fulfilling the criteria for inclusion. The studies show that PDT has therapeutic efficacy and effectiveness matching other forms of psychotherapy. LTPP shows better effect than STPP in the

This paper provides a comprehensive review of outcome studies and meta-analyses of effectiveness studies of psychodynamic therapy (PDT) for the major categories of mental disorders. Comparisons with inactive controls (waitlist, treatment as usual and placebo) generally but by no means invariably show PDT to be effective for depression, some anxiety disorders, eating disorders and somatic disorders. There is little evidence to support its implementation for post-traumatic stress disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, bulimia nervosa, cocaine dependence or psychosis. The strongest current evid

Historical approaches of psychotherapy for depression are contrasted with current psychotherapeutic strategies. Now more strategies are focused, structured, time-limited, observable, testable, researchable and data based. The following depressive syndromes are reviewed in terms of the literature that demonstrates the effectiveness of psychotherapy: major depressive disorder, bipolar depressive disorder, depression associated with medical illness such as cancer, myocardial infarction and stroke, resistant depression post-traumatic stress disorder, grief reactions and depression during adolescen

The clinical efficacy of psychodynamic psychotherapy (PDT) has undergone extensive study and review. Recently, researchers have studied the effects of this treatment on brain metabolic or synaptic activity, but the collective findings have never been reviewed. The objective of this review was to describe the findings of all neuroimaging studies of any form of PDT treatment. An extensive literature search through databases along with surveying of research groups were undertaken to acquire all available published studies. Eleven series were included in the final sample, consisting of 2 randomize

OBJECTIVES: The following paper presents the results of a post-treatment examination on inpatients with personality disorders who received psychodynamic psychotherapy. The examination was carried out approximately 3.3 years after the patients were discharged.
METHODS: Of a group of 110 patients with personality disorders (ICD-10), 72 patients underwent follow-up examination. A comprehensive catamnesis was compiled for 59 former patients; 13 former patients answered by post. Treatment success was evaluated on the basis of the Symptom Checklist 90-R, Inventory of Interpersonal Problems and Ques

Over the last 15 years, there has been a substantial increase in research and clinical implementations of Internet-delivered, cognitive behavioral therapy (ICBT). Several studies on ICBT have been in the format of guided self-help where a therapist guides the patient throughout the whole treatment. ICBT is typically in the form of self-help material (e.g., text or video) which is provided to a client over the Internet with additional therapist contact by e-mail. ICBT has been shown to be effective for various conditions and, in some studies, has shown to be as effective as face-to-face cogniti

OBJECTIVE: The search for empirically based treatments for pathological gambling is in its infancy, with relatively few clinical trials and an absence of naturalistic studies. Treatment retention of gamblers has been a problem; cognitive-behavioral treatment and pharmacotherapy studies report especially high dropout rates. Psychodynamic approaches, with their emphasis on the therapeutic relationship, and the meaning of the patient's self-destructive and seemingly irrational behaviors, and on obstacles to self-forgiveness, might improve outcome.
METHOD: After a description of psychodynamic psy

OBJECTIVE: To determine the effectiveness of manualized panic-focused psychodynamic psychotherapy (PFPP) in routine care in Germany.
METHOD: German psychoanalysts were trained according to the PFPP manual. Fifty-four consecutive outpatients with panic disorder (with or without agoraphobia) were randomly assigned in a 2:1 ratio to PFPP or cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) plus exposure therapy. Subjects (female 57.4%; mean age 36.2 years) had high rates of psychiatric (68.5%) and somatic (64.8%) comorbidity, and previous psychiatric treatments (57.4%). Assessments were performed pre- and pos

OBJECTIVE: Psychodynamically based brief psychotherapy is frequently used in clinical practice for a range of common mental disorders in children and adolescents. To our knowledge, there have been no meta-analyses to evaluate the effectiveness of these therapies.
METHOD: After a broad search, we meta-analyzed controlled outcome studies of short-term psychodynamic psychotherapies (STPP, 40 or fewer sessions). We also performed sensitivity analyses and evaluated the risk of bias in this body of studies.
RESULTS: We found 11 studies with a total of 655 patients covering a broad range of conditi

This article outlines the underpinnings of a psychodynamic approach for the treatment of childhood trauma through strengthening the implicit emotion regulation system. Childhood trauma impairs the functioning of the emotion regulation system, where deficits are common in children with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Difficulties with emotion regulation arise out of disruptions in the development of neurobiological pathways through the interaction of constitutional determinants with environmental factors, including the child's relationships with caregivers and the broader environment. Despite Freud's dictum that dreams are the royal road to the unconscious, the use of dream analysis by therapists working with Borderline Personality Disorder and other severe psychiatric conditions has in the past two decades has fallen into a state of decline, if not outright neglect. The reasons why are not altogether clear, though some have said that the growing popularity of ego psychology and other movements in the domain of psychoanalysis have perhaps pushed dream analysis to one side. To me this marginalization seems unjustified. I hope to demonstrate in this article the enduring utili

OBJECTIVE: The authors compared a combination of clomipramine and psychodynamic psychotherapy with clomipramine alone in a randomized controlled trial among patients with major depression.
METHODS: Seventy-four patients between the ages of 20 and 65 years who were assigned to ten weeks of acute outpatient treatment for major depression were studied. Bipolar disorder, psychotic symptoms, severe substance dependence, organic disorder, past intolerance to clomipramine, and mental retardation were exclusion criteria.
RESULTS: Marked improvement was noted in both treatment groups. Combined treatm
