One of the main difficulties in nanotechnology is the development of an environmentally friendly, successful method of producing nanoparticles from biological sources. Silver-doped zinc oxide nanoparticles (Ag-ZnO NPs), with antibacterial and antioxidant properties, were produced using Adiantum venustum extract as a green technique. Fresh A. venustum plants were gathered, then their bioactive elements were extracted with cold water and processed into nanoparticles. The main goal was to develop Ag-ZnO NPs (nanoparticles) for medical applications, especially with regard to their antifungal and a

INTRODUCTION: Chronic and infected wounds represent a persistent global health burden. Medicinal plants offer a promising source of wound-healing agents due to their multitarget activities, long history of traditional use, and accessibility. Adiantum capillus-veneris L. (ACV), traditionally used to treat a range of ailments, such as respiratory, urinary, and skin disorders, was investigated for its in vitro wound-healing potential following methanol extraction.
METHODS: We evaluated the effects of methanol extracts of ACV (ACVM) on cell proliferation, migration and antioxidative capacity in h

Land plants alternate between asexual sporophytes and sexual gametophytes. Unlike seed plants, ferns develop free-living gametophytes. Gametophytes of the model fern Ceratopteris exhibit two sex types: hermaphrodites with pluripotent meristems and males lacking meristems. In the absence of the pheromone antheridiogen, males convert to hermaphrodites by forming de novo meristems, although the mechanisms remain unclear. Using long-term time-lapse imaging and computational analyses, we captured male-to-hermaphrodite conversion at single-cell resolution and reconstructed the lineage and division a

This study aims to establish quality standards of Aleuritopteris Herba (AH), which could supply scientific evidence for the quality control of AH. The morphological and microscopic identification characters were reformulated. The tests of water content, total ash, acid-insoluble ash and ethanol-soluble extractives of AH were carried out according to the methods recorded in appendix of Chinese Pharmacopeia (2010 edition, volume 1). The TLC method was established by using aleuritopesis A [2,19-diol(2β,4α)-16-enekaureniod] and reference herb as references. With preparation of aleuritopesis A[2,19

Meristems house pluripotent stem cells and sustain continuous growth and organogenesis in land plants. Unlike seed plants, whose gametophytes lack meristems, fern gametophytes initiate and maintain meristems, enabling growth independently from sporophytes. In the model fern Ceratopteris richardii, gametophytes develop into either hermaphrodites or males. Hermaphrodites maintain multicellular meristems and secrete the pheromone antheridiogen, directing undetermined gametophytes to become male. Under constant antheridiogen exposure, males lack meristems and exclusively produce sperm-bearing anth

Acrostichum aureum L. (Pteridaceae) is traditionally used to manage diabetes and murky urine. The study explores the phytoconstituents in A. aureum and evaluates the in vitro and in vivo bioactivity in anti-hyperglycaemic and nephroprotective assays. Targeted UHPLC-QTOF-MS analysis tentatively identified 9 compounds. In vitro enzyme inhibition assays demonstrated inhibition (IC50) of α-glucosidase (40.85 ± 0.6 μg/mL) and α-amylase (45.12 ± 0.28 μg/mL), comparable to acarbose (19.65 ± 0.58 μg/mL and 22.54 ± 0.28 μg/mL, respectively). The extract at 200 mg/kg and 400 mg/kg body weight reduced fa

Most ferns, unlike all seed plants, are homosporous and produce sexually undifferentiated spores. Sex ratio in many homosporous species is environmentally established by the secretion of antheridiogen from female/hermaphrodite gametophytes. Nearby undetermined gametophytes perceive antheridiogen, which induces male development. In the fern Ceratopteris richardii (Ceratopteris), hermaphroditic (her) mutants develop as hermaphrodites even in the presence of antheridiogen. Modern sequencing and genomic tools make the molecular identification of mutants in the 11-Gbp genome of this fern possible.

Most land plants alternate between generations of sexual gametophytes and asexual sporophytes. Unlike seed plants, fern gametophytes are free living and grow independently of their sporophytes. In homosporous ferns such as Ceratopteris, gametophytes derived from genetically identical spores exhibit sexual dimorphism, developing as either males or hermaphrodites. Males lack meristems and promote cell differentiation into sperm-producing antheridia. In contrast, hermaphrodites initiate multicellular meristems that stay undifferentiated, sustain cell division and prothallus expansion, and drive t

Environmental contamination by heavy metals is a global issue, requiring effective and long-lasting remediation techniques. Pteridophytes are vascular plants that show phytoremediation potential in both gametophytic and sporophytic phases. Pityrogramma calomelanos (L.) of the family Pteridaceae is a fast-growing fern that is used to assess physiological and biochemical responses to short-term lead [Pb(II)] exposure. Pb(II) causes severe developmental, metabolic, and physiological damage in humans, animals, and plants. However, few plant systems mitigate heavy metal content using various modifi

Aleuritopteris bicolor (Family: Pteridaceae; Nepalese name: Raani Sinka) is an edible fern native to Nepal, India, China, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Pakistan. Ethnomedicinal practitioners from various ethnic tribes in Nepal have traditionally prescribed it to heal wounds, diarrhea, dysentery, and gastritis. However, scientific evidence supporting these efficacies remains limited until January 2025. In the present study, we aimed to validate these traditional uses through chemical, in vitro, and in silico analyses of the plant's hydroalcoholic extract. The 70% methanolic extract of the plant ex

According to WHO "World health statistics 2018", malaria alongside acute respiratory infections and diarrhoea, is one of the major infectious disease causing children's death in between the age of 1-5 years. Similarly, according to another report (2016) malaria accounts for approximately 3.14% of the total disease burden worldwide. Although malaria has been widely eradicated in many parts of the world, the global number of cases continues to rise due to the rapid spread of malaria parasites that are resistant to antimalarial drugs. Artemisinin (8), a major breakthrough in the antimalarial chem
