We report a case of rhabdomyolysis due to acetaminophen overdose involving the lateral pterygoid muscles bilaterally, in addition to the other muscles of the abdomen and pelvis. To the best of our knowledge, involvement of the head and neck muscles by rhabdomyolysis has not been reported previously. The isolated involvement of the lateral pterygoid muscles may be due to the presence of the surrounding pterygoid venous plexus. It is important to be aware of the imaging characteristics of rhabdomyolysis and to consider the possibility of involvement of head and neck muscles to aid in early diagn

A 6-year-old neutered male feline patient was presented with left sided facial swelling. A diagnosis of benign hypertrophy of the masseter and pterygoid muscles was made based on clinical, imaging, and histopathologic findings. Benign hypertrophy of masticatory muscles is an uncommon condition described in the human literature. Masseter muscle hypertrophy has been diagnosed rarely in humans with few references reporting concurrent hypertrophy of the medial and lateral pterygoid muscles. The primary inciting cause of this condition is unknown. Treatment in humans is primarily sought for cosmeti

Myositis ossificans (MO) is a disease whose main feature is the formation of heterotopic bone involving muscle or any other soft tissue. Pathogenesis is not all clear, but trauma is universally recognized as a trigger event. Myositis ossificans can be divided into 2 classifications: MO progressiva and MO traumatica. The authors present a case of a 64-year-old man who was diagnosed with MOT of the left medial pterygoid muscle. The patient had a long clinical history of signs and symptoms of temporomandibular articulation related to previous conditions, and no major traumatic events were reporte

BACKGROUND: The medial pterygoid muscle (MPM) is frequently implicated in pain and dysfunction in patients with temporomandibular disorders (TMDs), owing to its functional complexity, susceptibility to overload, and rich neuromuscular control. Paradoxically, in patients rehabilitated with tubero-pterygoid implants, whose apices often penetrate or traverse the MPM attachment, no pain, trismus, or TMD-related symptoms are typically observed.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of implant penetration into the medial pterygoid muscle using CBCT and clinical examination aft

Hypertrophy refers to an enlargement caused by an increase in the size but not in the number of cells. Generalised masticatory muscle hypertrophy may affect the temporalis muscle, masseters and medial pterygoids in a variety of combinations. Masseteric hypertrophy may present as either unilateral or bilateral painless swelling of unknown origin in the region of angle of mandible. It is a relatively rare condition and presents a diagnostic dilemma. While the history and clinical examination are important in differentiating this benign condition from parotid or dental pathology, they cannot nece

PURPOSE: Pterygoid process fractures (PPFs) are classically associated with Lefort fractures but can also be encountered in association with other facial fractures such as mandibular fractures. The aim of this study was to estimate the frequency of PPFs associated with mandibular fractures and identify factors associated with PPF.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cross-sectional study using computed tomography scanning of patients having a mandibular fracture between November 2018 and April 2020. PPFs were classified using the classification by An et al. Volume, length, and

The infratemporal fossa (ITF) is a potential space bounded by bony structures that can be occupied by both benign and malignant tumors. It is also a potential area of abscess development, most commonly of dental origin. As with any abscess, the treatment of an ITF abscess is surgical drainage. We present a case of an ITF abscess involving the pterygoid muscles following dental extraction in a poorly controlled diabetic patient. The ITF was accessed with an endoscopic transseptal approach through the maxillary sinus to drain the abscess. This case of successful management supports the feasibili

Soft tissues osteoma is an execeedingly rare tumour. It is a benign often asymptomatic neoplasm. The exact etiology and pathogenesis of osteomas are unclear. This paper report a case of peripheral osteoma located in the middle part of the medial pterygoid muscle of the right infratemporal region in a 60-year-old woman. Clinical examination did not reveal any extraoral swelling, facial asymmetry or difficulty in mouth opening, and the regional lymph nodes were non-palpable. Panoramic radiograph show a round well-circumscribed free/independent radiopaque mass located in the middle part of the ri

BACKGROUND: Trismus is a common problem with various causes. Any abnormal conditions of relevant anatomic structures that disturb the free movement of the jaw might provoke trismus. Trismus has a detrimental effect on the quality of life. The outcome of this abnormality is critically dependent on timely diagnosis and treatment, and it is difficult to identify the true origin in some cases. We present a rare case of trismus due to fungal myositis in the pterygoid muscle, excluding any other possible pathogenesis.
CASE SUMMARY: The patient presented with a 2-mo history of restricted mouth openi

Intramuscular EMG of the lateral pterygoid muscles (LPM), surface EMG of the temporalis and masseter muscles and force measurements of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) were synchronously used to investigate the biomechanical role of the two heads of the LPM in relation to internal derangement (ID) of the TMJ. EMG and kinetic analysis of five static conditions (resting, protraction, opening, molar and incisor clenching) and three maximum isometric masticatory forces (opening, molar and incisor clenching) were done to compare forces and muscular activity between TMJ ID and control subjects. The upper head of the lateral pterygoid muscle (LPM) is known to insert into the capsule of the temporomandibular joint and articular disc, and therefore its relationship with temporomandibular disorders (TMD) has been consistently suggested. The aim of the study was to determine the anatomical features of the LPM using ultrasonographic (US) imaging. Around 120 hemifaces from 60 healthy Korean volunteers were included in this study. US images were taken with the subject's mouth 2 cm open. The transducer was placed at a position where the infratemporal fossa could be observed through the mandib

PURPOSE: The discrepancies in the literature regarding the anatomy of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), particularly at the level of the lateral pterygoid muscle, led us to compare plastinated section techniques and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to enable the better interpretation of both, and to describe the features of the lateral pterygoid muscle and the exact location of its insertions.
METHODS: A total of 24 blocks of human TMJ were used. Seven were studied by MRI, obtaining images of the oblique-sagittal, oblique-coronal, and axial planes. Four of these blocks were then cut and proc

We describe the case of a young boy with severe clinical symptoms which mimicked several findings consistent with a peritonsillar abscess (PTA). After the patient exhibited no improvement with medical management, imaging revealed an intramuscular medial pterygoid abscess secondary to parapharyngeal space lymphadenitis. This is the first reported case of a patient with a medial pterygoid abscess secondary to lymphadenitis. We also describe a minimally invasive surgical approach for incision and drainage of the abscess that has not previously been described in the literature.

Oromandibular dystonia (OMD) is a rare neurological condition infrequently seen by oral and maxillofacial surgeons which may result in inappropriate deviation of the mandible, subluxation and intraoral soft tissue trauma. A case is presented of a patient suffering from spasmodic torticollis and lateral pterygoid dystonia and currently under treatment with botulinum A toxin (Botox) injections. Botox has emerged as the most effective form of symptomatic treatment for abnormabilities in muscle movement, namely dystonia with oromandibular symptoms.

Myositis ossificans is ossification and bone formation within muscle. It is a rare and unusual pathologic entity that has defied most efforts to establish definite etiology, pathogenesis, and satisfactory treatment. Myositis ossificans is mainly of 2 types: myositis ossificans progressiva (MOP) and myositis ossificans traumatica (MOT). Myositis ossificans idiopathic is also reported in the literature. When it affects the muscles of mastication, it causes severe trismus. Computed tomography scans and magnetic resonance imaging can effectively delineate the calcified mass. In this article, we pr
