BACKGROUND: Mayflies are basal winged insects of crucial importance for the understanding of the early evolution of Pterygota. Unlike all other insects, they have two successive winged stages, the subimago and the imago. Their forewings feature so-called bullae, which are desclerotized spots in the anterior main veins. Up to now, they have been considered to play a major role in wing bending during flight.
RESULTS: We investigated bullae by multiple methods to reveal their structure and arrangement and to gain new information on the evolution of insect flight. Bullae are mostly present in the

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Pterygota alata (Roxb.) R.Br. bark extract has been studied to have cytotoxic activity on 4T1 cells. This study was conducted to determine the cytotoxic activity of several fractions of Pterygota alata (Roxb.) R.Br. bark against 4T1 breast cancer cells and to investigate the most active fractions on Bcl-2 and Bax expressions.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The bark of Pterygota alata (Roxb.) R.Br. was extracted using 80% methanol and was fractionated into fractions of n-hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate, n-butanol and insoluble n-butanol with liquid-liquid partition. Cytotox

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Cancer stands as one of the leading causes of death worldwide according to the World Health Organization (WHO), and it has led to approximately 10 million fatalities in 2020. Medicinal plants are still widely used and accepted form of treatment for most diseases including cancer in Ghana. This review presented Cryptolepis nigrescens (Wennberg) L. Joubert. and Bruyns., Prosopsis africana (Guill. and Perr.) Taub. and Pterygota macrocarpa K. Schum. as medicinal plants that are traditionally used to treat tumour growth, amongst other diseases, in the Ashanti region

The origin and early radiation of winged insects (Pterygota) represent one of the most transformative events in terrestrial evolution, yet phylogenetic relationships among their basalmost lineages (Ephemeroptera, Odonata and Neoptera) continue to be a central debate within insect systematics. Here, we present the most taxonomically comprehensive phylogenomic analysis to date, leveraging genomic and transcriptomic data from 101 species, including 16 sequenced ephemeropteran genomes. Employing 1,367 universal single-copy orthologs across two supermatrices, we used concatenation- and coalescent-b

Although most discussions on the origin and evolution of insect wings and metamorphosis have assumed that the ancestors of winged insects were terrestrial, it now seems possible that they were actually aquatic. Changing the basic assumptions affects our interpretations of the origin of metamorphosis and our understanding of insect diversity. It is argued that the ancestors of winged insects were similar to primitive mayflies, developing from aquatic larvae into terrestrial adults, and that metamorphosis originated as an inevitable consequence of an amphibiotic life cycle. It is suggested that

The hexapod thorax represents a specialized tagma for body locomotion, and its formation was one of the crucial steps in arthropod evolutionary history. In insects, the thoracic morphology was crucial for the acquisition of wings, which was closely connected with the reinforcement of the lateral thoracic wall (pleuron). Here, we uncover the structure of the pleuron for the first time in a Carboniferous palaeodictyopteran, Eubleptus danielsi from the Mazon Creek Lagerstätte (Illinois, USA). We reconstructed a 3D model of E. danielsi and compared flight-related traits with a broad range of extan

Zoraptera (also called "angel insects") is one of the most unexplored insect orders. However, it holds promise for understanding the evolution of insect karyotypes and genome organization given its status as an early branching group of Polyneoptera and Pterygota (winged insects) during the Paleozoic. Here, we provide karyotype descriptions of three Zorapteran species: Brazilozoros huxleyi (2n♂; ♀ = 42; 42), B. kukalovae (2n♂; ♀ = 43; 44) and Latinozoros cacaoensis (2n♂; ♀ = 36; 36). These species represent two of the four recently recognized Zorapteran subfamilies. Contrary to an earlier sugge

Whitefly (Bemisia tabaci Gennadius) is a hemipteran phyto polyphagous sucking insect pest which is an important pest of cotton that causes economic losses to the crop by reducing its yield and quality. Ecdysteroids such as 20-hydroxy ecdysone (20-E), play a significant role in larval moulting, development, and reproduction in pterygota insects. Receptor of 20-E, that is Ecdysone Receptor (BtEcR) of Bemisia tabaci has been targeted to prevent fundamental developmental processes. To identify potent inhibitors of BtEcr, 98,072 natural compounds were retrieved from ZINC database. A structure-based

Pterocarpus soyauxii (P. soyauxii) is a Fabaceae family traditionally used to treat menopausal disorders. This study aims to investigate the effect of P. soyauxii on menopause-related non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and to determine its mechanisms of action and signaling pathways. The pharmacokinetic and dynamic properties and the toxicological profile of P. soyauxii compounds were assessed using the SwissADME and Protox III databases. A pharmacology network was constructed to identify active compound targets and corresponding genes. Compound target and protein-protein interaction ne

Dipeptidyl peptidase IV (DPP-IV) is an enzyme responsible for the degradation of the incretin hormone glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1). DPP-IV plays a significant role in regulating blood glucose levels by modulating the activity of GLP-1. In the context of diabetes, DPP-IV inhibitors effectively block the activity of DPP-IV, hence mitigating the degradation of GLP-1. This, in turn, leads to an extension of GLP-1's duration of action, prolongs gastric emptying, enhances insulin sensitivity, and ultimately results in the reduction of blood glucose levels. Nonetheless, reported adverse events of

BACKGROUND: Excessive ultraviolet exposure triggers skin pigment deposition, potentially leading to conditions such as melasma, freckles, and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. The skin of individuals with these dermatological conditions exhibits reduced levels of nicotinamide nucleotide transhydrogenase (NNT). While many seek skin-whitening products to address pigmentation, existing options often fail to achieve optimal efficacy. To accomplish a synergistic whitening effect, we developed PPV, a composite formulation incorporating three depigmenting agents: Pterocarpus marsupium bark extract
