PONS - Mobility Assistance on Footpaths for Public Transportation.

This paper presents an ongoing project targeting mobility support for users of public transportation including people with limited mobility. Existing approaches in this field mostly offer non-continuous guidance during the whole journey including multiple rides with different vehicles and footpaths in between at transfer points. Especially people with limited mobility, like people with disabilities and elderly people, or travelers who are not familiar with the specific route or transfer point, like tourists, often struggle with public transportation. They crave for a seamless approach covering

Public assistance program and food diversity among older people: a cross-sectional study using the Japan Gerontological Evaluation Study data : Public assistance program and food diversity.

BACKGROUND: Food diversity plays an important role in people's healthy and affluent lives. However, poverty and eating alone can create multi-dimensional barriers to food diversity. Although public assistance programs guarantee a minimum income to people in need, financial support alone may not be sufficient to support the health of people in poverty. This study aimed to identify the differences in food diversity intake between older recipients of public assistance and non-recipients. METHODS: This cross-sectional study utilized data from the Japanese Gerontological Evaluation Study (2022), i

Public assistance and survival equality in patients with EGFR mutation-positive lung cancer.

BACKGROUND: Disparities in public assistance or the urbanization level of a residential region can affect cancer treatment outcomes. This study aimed to investigate whether these factors affect the overall survival (OS) of patients with epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) mutation-positive non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) using Tokushukai REAL World Data. METHODS: We analyzed the clinical data of consecutive patients with NSCLC receiving EGFR-tyrosine kinase inhibitors between April 2010 and March 2020 at 46 Tokushukai Medical Group hospitals in Japan. No Cost Sharing for Public Assistance Recipients and Health Service Usage in Japan.

IMPORTANCE: In Japan, the public assistance (PA) system for low-income individuals provides medical aid that covers all health care costs (no cost sharing). However, little is known about how health care service utilization changes after PA certification. OBJECTIVE: To examine the trajectories of outpatient medical and dental care utilization among PA recipients before and after PA certification. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Longitudinal data from a municipality in Japan participating in the Longevity Improvement Fair Evidence Study from 2017 to 2022 were used. Generalized estimating e

Working-age patients with medically unexplained oral symptoms who receive public assistance in Japan.

Medically unexplained oral symptoms (MUOS) are frequently associated with psychosocial factors. Although most affected individuals can maintain their usual daily activities, a small subset experience pronounced socioeconomic hardship, and the prevalence and characteristics remain unclear in working-age Japanese public assistance recipients. This retrospective chart review examined 3685 first-visit patients at a tertiary psychosomatic dentistry clinic between April 2016 and March 2023. Of these, 98 (2.7%) received public assistance, and 55 (1.5% of the total sample) were aged 18-64 years. Demog

[Human immunodeficiency virus infections and hospital structures: trends in the Public Assistance of Paris].

The evolution of the number of patients with the AIDS virus admitted to the Paris hospitals is monitored by two index systems, one based on the discharge diagnosis and the other a transverse inquiry on a given day, updated every three months since its conception at the beginning of 1986. This index also allows an evaluation of the number of patients consulting for this condition. In 1986, AIDS and AIDS related complexes (ARC) represented 1 p. 100 of the activity of the Assistance Publique Paris hospitals including all in- and outpatients. These conditions will probably account for 2 p. 100 of

Development of a health behavior scale for older adults living alone receiving public assistance.

BACKGROUND: To reduce health disparities, prevention of non-communicable diseases (NCD) by performing desirable health behavior in older adults living alone with low socioeconomic status is an essential strategy in public health. Self-perception of personal power and practical skills for daily health are key elements of desirable health behavior. However, methods for measuring these concepts have not been established. This study aimed to develop a health behavior scale for older adults living alone receiving public assistance (HBSO). METHODS: The self-administered mail survey covered 2818 old

Participation Across Public Programs among Children in Low-income Families: Public Preschool, Child Care Subsidies, and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.

Early care and education (ECE) and nutrition assistance programs expand opportunity during early childhood. Although prior research examines participation in individual ECE programs, few investigate how families combine support across programs despite overlap in eligibility, or how nutrition assistance influences these decisions. Using linked administrative data from Virginia (2015-2019), this study examines how low-income families bundle public preschool with child care subsidies, and the extent to which the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) changes that link during the pre-K y

Characteristics and hospitalizations among children on public assistance in Japan: A population-based cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Child poverty is a critical issue in Japan. While public assistance (seikatsu-hogo) alleviates financial barriers to healthcare, the multidimensional nature of poverty, including social and environmental factors, may still affect children's health. Although previous research has explored health disparities among adults receiving public assistance, little is known about the current conditions and healthcare needs of child recipients. This study aimed to describe the characteristics of children on public assistance and identify the incidence and predictors of hospitalization among th

Non-financial social determinants of diabetes among public assistance recipients in Japan: A cohort study.

AIMS/INTRODUCTION: Poverty is an important social determinant of diabetes. Poverty is a multidimensional concept including non-financial difficulties, such as social isolation and exclusion from communities. Many countries provide financial social assistance programs for those in need. This study aimed to explore non-financial social determinants of diabetes among public assistance recipients in Japan, by using linkage data of two municipal public assistance databases and medical assistance claim data. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We carried out a retrospective cohort study. Public assistance is pr

Mother-child separations among homeless and housed families receiving public assistance in New York City.

We examined the incidence, characteristics, and predictors of separations of children from mothers in 543 poor families receiving public assistance, 251 of whom had experienced homelessness during the previous 5 years. Forty-four percent of the homeless mothers and 8% of housed mothers were separated from one or more children. A total of 249 children were separated from 110 homeless families and 34 children from 23 housed families. Children were placed with relatives and in foster care but were rarely returned to their mothers. Maternal drug dependence, domestic violence, and institutionalizat

Single-parenthood and health conditions among children receiving public assistance in Japan: a cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Children's healthy development is important. While governmental public assistance benefits financially troubled families, it cannot compensate for a lack of social support. Single-parenthood is a health risk factor for children owing to low-income-associated food insecurity and stress. No study has investigated the association between single-parenthood and health status in children from families receiving public assistance. This study aimed to examine the association between single-parent households and children's health among public assistance recipients in Japan by using linkage

Impact of Mental Disorders on Employment and Receipt of Public Assistance: An Instrumental Variables Approach.

BACKGROUND: Unlike other disorders, much of the economic burden of mental disorders is not due to direct costs of care, but due to indirect costs such as loss of employment and the receipt of public assistance. AIMS: The goal of this paper is to estimate how having a mental disorder impacts employment outcomes, receipt of public assistance and food assistance. METHODS: We estimate the impact of having a mental disorder on employment and the receipt of public assistance using instrumental variable (IV) methods and a longitudinal dataset: National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Co
