Impact of Evidence-Based Practices and Emerging Paradigms on Oral Health Outcomes in Public Health Dentistry: A Prospective Study.

BACKGROUND: Encouraging fair access to dental treatment and resolving gaps in oral health depend on public health dentistry. The impact of new paradigms and evidence-based practices in public health dentistry on oral health outcomes across a range of communities is examined in this study. METHODS: A number of community health centers participated in this prospective study. Six hundred participants from a range of backgrounds were divided into intervention and control groups for the study. While the control group received normal dental treatment, the intervention group received teledentistry s

Integration of artificial intelligence in public health dentistry: applications, challenges, and future directions - a scoping review.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming healthcare delivery globally, with increasing applications in public health dentistry. This scoping review maps and synthesises the current state of AI integration in public health dentistry practice, education, research, and surveillance. A comprehensive literature search was conducted across PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Embase, and the Cochrane Library (with Google Scholar used as a supplementary source) from database inception to December 31, 2024. Thirteen studies were included to map the range of evidence on AI applications, performance metr

From Clinic to Community: An Interpretable Artificial Intelligence Framework for Enamel Caries Detection to Support Public Health Dentistry.

OBJECTIVES: Dental enamel caries is among the most prevalent oral diseases worldwide. Early detection is essential, as incipient lesions can be managed with noninvasive therapies. Conventional methods, such as visual-tactile inspection and radiography, remain limited by examiner variability and reduced sensitivity for early lesions. This study aimed to develop an efficient and interpretable deep learning framework for automated classification of enamel caries at multiple severity levels, while ensuring clinical applicability and transparency. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A dataset of 2,000 clinical

Policy Agenda Setting in Public Health Dentistry: Implementing North America's First Universal School-Based Dental Program in Saskatchewan.

The Saskatchewan Dental Plan in Canada was the first universal dental care plan for children in North America. Based on a similar New Zealand program, it would take over two decades from the time that the provincial government first considered the New Zealand policy until a final decision was made to implement the program. This article reviews the reasons for the long gestation of the policy, including the hostility of organized dentistry in Saskatchewan and Canada and the caution of the government's bureaucracy. It would take until a social democratic government was elected in 1971 before the

The future of dentistry in England: A vision for 2050 - From access crisis to health creation: Prevention, integration and public value.

By 2050, dentistry could be transformed by regenerative science, artificial intelligence, remote monitoring and more integrated digital records. The central question is whether those advances translate into better oral health for all or widen existing inequalities in access and outcomes. Many of the enabling technologies are already emerging; the more important question is how they are organised, commissioned and distributed. This paper argues for a shift from episodic repair towards health creation: preventing disease, identifying risk earlier, preserving tissue and function, and connecting o

Patients' perceived treatment need owing to temporomandibular disorders and perceptions of related treatment in dentistry-A mixed-method study.

BACKGROUND: To easily identify patients who could benefit from a temporomandibular disorder (TMD) examination, three screening questions (3Q/TMD) have been introduced in large parts of Sweden. The questions are related to a TMD diagnosis. However, how the questions relate to a treatment need is unknown. OBJECTIVES: The first aim of the study was to identify predicting factors for perceived treatment need among adult individuals who screened positive to the 3Q/TMD. The second aim was to explore individuals' thoughts and experiences related to treatment of their TMD complaint. METHODS: This mi

Public health model for Dental Specialty MEDRETE.

OBJECTIVE: Dental readiness training exercises constitute one form of a specialty medical readiness and training exercise (MEDRETE). Traditional dental missions have been a part of general MEDRETEs and have focused care on extractions and the provision of oral hygiene instructions. This article describes the tenets of a prevention-based dental humanitarian mission to Honduras in 2002. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The U.S. Army Southern Command requested a Dental Specialty MEDRETE for fiscal year 2002. A site visit revealed the absence of water fluoridation, high levels of dental disease, and a desi

Dentistry and medicine, then and now.

Two factors have, at times, pushed dentistry and medicine together and pulled them apart. The factor acting to create a symbiosis is the common biomedical or scientific foundation for these fields. The factor causing independence deals with socio-cultural matters impacting on the professions and the public. These two factors will be examined at three points in time when the relationship between the two professions was significantly important for the welfare of the public: the 1920s and '30s, the 1960s and '70s, and our own time. Contemporary major discussion about the alignment of dental educa

[The caries prevention campaign in the Canton of Zürich during 1962-1974 along with a statistical result report from the first 8 years].

In November 1962, a caries prophylactic campaign was inaugurated in the canton of Zurich. At the end of 1965, two thirds of the communities, 115 of 171, had introduced already toothbrushing with fluorine compounds at school, under supervision. The following years though did not bring notable increase in participation of the remaining communities. Here are the main results of the campaign: -reduction of dental caries in the permanent dentition by 45 to 50% (fig. 2) -reduction of dental caries on cuspid and incisor teeth and on the buccal and lingual surfaces of lateral teeth by about 80% -reduc

SNOMED-CT and learning health systems for NHS dentistry - a dream needing to become reality.

There has been discussion and confusion about SNOMED-CT (systematised nomenclature of medicine clinical terminology), learning health systems (LHSs) and their relevance in dentistry. This article aims to provide an overview of SNOMED-CT, LHSs and the all-too-often omitted patient and service benefits from their use. LHSs are delivering impactful benefits to patients and services globally in medicine. There are some examples in dentistry, but these are few and lack the nationalised co-ordinated efforts supporting general medical practice (GP) electronic health record (EHR) databases. These impa
