[Statistical methods for detecting and adjusting for publication bias].

Publication bias in meta-analysis occurs if the probability of publication depends on the estimated treatment effect and the precision/size of a study. In this article we describe the funnel plot as a graphical method to evaluate the presence of publication bias. Furthermore, tests of publication bias based on funnel plots are explained, and methods are presented that estimate treatment effects adjusted for publication bias. The article closes with a critical discussion of the various statistical methods.

Overcoming publication and dissemination bias in infectious diseases clinical trials.

Non-timely reporting, selective reporting, or non-reporting of clinical trial results are prevalent and serious issues. WHO mandates that summary results be available in registries within 12 months of study completion and published in full text within 24 months. However, only a limited number of clinical trials in infectious diseases, including those done during the COVID-19 pandemic, have their results posted on ClinicalTrials.gov. An analysis of 50 trials of eight antiviral drugs tested against COVID-19 with a completion date of at least 2 years ago revealed that only 18% had their results p

Publication bias, with a focus on psychiatry: causes and solutions.

Publication bias undermines the integrity of the evidence base by inflating apparent drug efficacy and minimizing drug harms, thus skewing the risk-benefit ratio. This paper reviews the topic of publication bias with a focus on drugs prescribed for psychiatric conditions, especially depression, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and autism. Publication bias is pervasive; although psychiatry/psychology may be the most seriously afflicted field, it occurs throughout medicine and science. Responsibility lies with various parties (authors as well as journals, academia as well as industry), so the mo

The implications of publication bias for meta-analysis' other parameter.

Perhaps the greatest threat to the validity of a meta-analysis is the possibility of publication bias, where studies that are interesting or statistically significant are more likely to be published than those with less encouraging results. In particular, there is the concern that this bias might be 'one-sided', where studies indicating that the treatment is beneficial have a greater probability of publication. The impact that this type of bias has on the estimate of treatment effect has received a great deal of attention but this also has implications for estimates of between-study variance.

Operating characteristics of a rank correlation test for publication bias.

An adjusted rank correlation test is proposed as a technique for identifying publication bias in a meta-analysis, and its operating characteristics are evaluated via simulations. The test statistic is a direct statistical analogue of the popular "funnel-graph." The number of component studies in the meta-analysis, the nature of the selection mechanism, the range of variances of the effect size estimates, and the true underlying effect size are all observed to be influential in determining the power of the test. The test is fairly powerful for large meta-analyses with 75 component studies, but

Publication probability of a study on odds ratio value circumstantial evidence for publication bias in medical study areas.

A summarized odds ratio, calculated from odds ratios of published studies in a meta-analysis, may be overestimated because of publication bias. A method has been developed estimating indirectly the summarized odds ratio of all studies in a given research area, including not only those published but also unpublished. In the present study, a publication probability according to odds ratio value was obtained from the probability density function of all the studies, and a histogram of those published. A publication probability, according to odds ratio value, enables us to infer the quantitative re

Analysis of publication bias in the literature for distal radius fracture.

PURPOSE: Distal radius fractures are the most commonly treated fracture, and their management remains complex. We aimed to evaluate the presence of publication bias in the literature on distal radius fracture management and to identify specific study variables that may influence the reporting of positive outcomes. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review on all available journal articles to find primary articles reporting on the management of distal radius fractures. Data collected included the direction of study outcome (positive, neutral, and negative) and various study characteristics inc

Evaluation of publication bias in response interruption and redirection: A meta-analysis.

Publication bias is the disproportionate representation of studies with large effects and statistically significant findings in the published research literature. If publication bias occurs in single-case research design studies on applied behavior-analytic (ABA) interventions, it can result in inflated estimates of ABA intervention effects. We conducted an empirical evaluation of publication bias on an evidence-based ABA intervention for children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, response interruption and redirection (RIRD). We determined effect size estimates for published and unpubli

Circulating 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels and hypertension risk after adjusting for publication bias.

BACKGROUND: Previous systematic reviews reported that serum vitamin D deficiency was associated with risk of hypertension. The aim was to conduct a meta-epidemiological analysis for evaluating the potential effects of publication bias. METHODS: The selection criterion was defined as a follow-up study for evaluating the association between circulating 25-hydroxyvitam D level and hypertension risk in adults. A funnel plot and Egger's test were used to detect a publication bias. If a publication bias was identified, trim-and-fill analysis (TFA) with linear estimator was performed to estimate a s

Pharmacologic treatment of repetitive behaviors in autism spectrum disorders: evidence of publication bias.

OBJECTIVE: The goal of this study was to examine the efficacy of serotonin receptor inhibitors (SRIs) for the treatment of repetitive behaviors in autism spectrum disorders (ASD). METHODS: Two reviewers searched PubMed and Clinicaltrials.gov for randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trials evaluating the efficacy of SRIs for repetitive behaviors in ASD. Our primary outcome was mean improvement in ratings scales of repetitive behavior. Publication bias was assessed by using a funnel plot, the Egger's test, and a meta-regression of sample size and effect size. RESULTS: Our search identi

A robust P-value for treatment effect in meta-analysis with publication bias.

Publication bias is a major and intractable problem in meta-analysis. There have been several attempts in the literature to adapt methods to allow for such bias, but these are only possible if we are prepared to make strong assumptions about the underlying selection mechanism. We discuss the assumption that the probability that a paper is published may depend in some unspecified way on the P-value being claimed by that study. We suggest a new robust P-value for the overall treatment effect, which turns out to be closely related to the correlation of the associated radial plot. Properties of th

Publication Bias in Randomized Controlled Trials of Hypospadias Surgical Repair: A Systematic Review.

OBJECTIVES: Hypospadias is a common congenital condition in males that has been subject to extensive research. However, publication bias can distort the scientific literature and impact clinical decision-making. This review evaluates publication bias in hypospadias research and emphasizes the need for balanced reporting to improve clinical practices and enhance patient care. METHODS: A literature search was conducted using four public databases to identify peer-reviewed randomized controlled trials (RCT) of surgical interventions for hypospadias. The primary outcomes were success rate and com

Using journal impact factors to correct for the publication bias of medical studies.

Publication bias of the results of medical studies can invalidate evidence-based medicine. The existing methodology for modeling this essentially relies upon the symmetry of the funnel plot. We present a new method of modeling publication bias that uses this information plus the impact factors of the publishing journals. A simple model of the publication process enables the estimation of bias-corrected intervention effects. The procedure is illustrated using a meta-analysis of the effectiveness of single-dose oral aspirin for acute pain, and results are also obtained for five other meta-analys

Effect of publication bias on the evidence supporting the use of myopia control interventions.

PURPOSE: Publication bias exists when studies with negative results are less likely to be published, resulting in over-estimation of treatment efficacy. This study aimed to assess the impact of publication bias on current evidence supporting myopia control interventions. METHODS: A systematic literature search was conducted to retrieve systematic-reviews (SRs) and meta-analyses (MAs) assessing myopia control interventions. From eligible SRs & MAs randomised controlled trials (RCTs) evaluating myopia control treatments (spectacle-based, contact lenses (CL), pharmacological) were included. Outc

Publication bias in clinical trials in cataract therapies: implications for evidence-based decision-making.

Evidence-based decision-making is generally based on published evidence. Therefore, if the published evidence is biased, so will the decision-making. One possible bias is the "positive-results" publication bias. This study attempts to characterize this phenomenon in cataract therapy trials. Studies were categorized as "positive" if their results were congruent with the hypothesis and "negative" if not. Secondary outcomes included the influence of funding source and differences in publication metrics between "positive" and "negative" publications. The U.S. National Library of Medicine Clinical

No publication bias in industry funded clinical trials of degenerative diseases of the spine.

Industry sponsorship of clinical research of degenerative diseases of the spine has been associated with excessive positive published results as compared to research carried out without industry funding. We sought the rates of publication of clinical trials of degenerative diseases of the spine based on funding source as a possible explanation for this phenomenon. We reviewed all clinical trials registered at clinicaltrials.gov relating to degenerative diseases of the spine as categorized under six medical subject heading terms (spinal stenosis, spondylolisthesis, spondylolysis, spondylosis, f

Times are changing, bias isn't: A meta-meta-analysis on publication bias detection practices, prevalence rates, and predictors in industrial/organizational psychology.

Effect misestimations plague Psychological Science, but advances in the identification of dissemination biases in general and publication bias in particular have helped in dealing with biased effects in the literature. However, the application of publication bias detection methods appears to be not equally prevalent across subdisciplines. It has been suggested that particularly in I/O Psychology, appropriate publication bias detection methods are underused. In this meta-meta-analysis, we present prevalence estimates, predictors, and time trends of publication bias in 128 meta-analyses that wer
