Rust disease on common groundsel was independently collected from two backyard gardens in Alberta, Canada during 2005, the first on September 11 in Sherwood Park (53.542°N, 113.262°W) and the second on September 18 in Edmonton (53.463°N, 113.593°W). Leaves of each specimen had clusters of orange, cup-shaped aecia, bordered by recurved peridia, the principal macroscopic signs of disease. Infected plants had twisted stems and deformed leaves. Spores of isolates from the two locations were (mean diameter [± s.d.; range]) 14.6 (± 1.4; 11.4 to 18.9) × 12.5 (± 1.1; 9.1 to 16.2) μm, orange, oval or a

Wheat stripe rust, caused by Puccinia striiformis f. sp. tritici (Pst), is a crucial disease for wheat worldwide and constantly threatens wheat production in southwestern and northwestern China, where the environment is a good fit for Pst oversummering and overwintering. However, the underlying genetic dynamics of spring epidemic Pst populations across large areas of continuous planting in the southwestern and northwestern regions are poorly understood. A total of 2,103 Pst isolates were sampled in the spring of 2019 from the two agroecosystems and grouped into three horizontal spatial scales

Eggplant (Solanum melongena) and other Solanum spp. are aecial hosts for Puccinia substriata var. indica, the rust pathogen of pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum) (2). Although long suspected to be important in epidemic initiation (1), natural infection of eggplant has never been documented in the United States. All previous observations have been the result of deliberate inoculations. Eggplant (cv. Santana) seedlings with sporulating aecia were identified in the inventory of a vegetable transplant producer near Ty Ty, GA, on 22 April 1997. Flats of seedlings were being grown in a greenhouse wit

BACKGROUND: Recent studies have shown the effects of glyphosate drift on decreasing rust intensity on Eucalyptus grandis plants. However, the effects of the herbicide on Puccinia psidii initial development are unknown. In this study the systemic action of glyphosate on rust severity was evaluated on Eucalyptus plants maintained under greenhouse conditions. Urediniospore germination and apressorium formation on detached leaves and on water agar medium, previously treated with glyphosate, were also evaluated.
RESULTS: Rust severity and the number of urediniospores per leaf area were significant

Stripe rust, caused by Puccinia striiformis f. sp. tritici (Pst), is a major constraint to wheat production in China. Although the disease occurs in Tibet every year under the favorable weather conditions, the virulence diversity and population structure of the Pst population in this region remain poorly understood. In this study, 312 Pst isolates collected in 2025 from five major wheat-growing regions of Tibet (Qamdo, Nyingchi, Lhasa, Shannan, and Shigatse) were characterized using virulence phenotyping and the Pst 5K genotyping-by-target-sequencing (GBTS) platform. Virulence testing on 19 Ch

The aim of this work was to develop a method for the identification of pathogens causing rust diseases of crops using matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) of intact cells or spores (IC/IS). All optimizations were performed with Puccinia triticina, the causal agent of wheat leaf rust. Experiments included selection of washing solvents for spores, finding of an optimal concentration of spores in suspension and the most suitable matrix system as well as an evaluation of different sample preparation techniques. The best results were obtained w

Wheat stripe (or yellow) rust, caused by the Basidiomycota fungus Puccinia striiformis West. f. sp. tritici Eriks. & Henn. (Pst), is one of the most destructive wheat diseases globally. Frequent outbreaks of this disease often lead to substantial crop yield losses. Currently, the primary strategies for controlling wheat stripe rust rely on the cultivation of resistant cultivars and the application of fungicides. However, fungicide use is associated with a range of adverse effects, such as environmental pollution and disruption of ecological balance. As a result, the development of promising bi

Wheat leaf rust, caused by Puccinia triticina Erikss. (Pt), is a major foliar disease that poses a significant threat to wheat production in Henan Province, a major wheat-growing region of China. Elucidating the population genetic structure of Pt is critical for predicting pathogen dispersal trends and guiding disease management. In this study, 384 Pt isolates collected from 13 locations in Henan were genotyped using 11 polymorphic simple sequence repeat (SSR) loci. A total of 204 multilocus genotypes (MLGs) were identified. The Sanmenxia (SMX) population exhibited the highest genetic diversit

Puccinia polysora, the causal agent of southern corn rust (SCR), poses a major threat to maize production, yet comprehensive studies under Indian conditions remain limited. This study provides an integrated analysis of the morphology, infection biology, molecular identity, and associated fungal microbiome of P. polysora. Microscopic investigations using stereoscopic, light, and scanning electron microscopy revealed detailed spore morphology and infection structures, including appressoria formation and intercellular colonization. Notably, hyphal anastomosis was observed, suggesting a potential

The constitutive photomorphogenesis 9 (COP9) signalosome (CSN) is a versatile regulator of plant growth, development, and response to diverse pathogens. However, little research has been done to understand the function of those CSN genes in broad-spectrum resistance to pathogens. In this study, we found that the transcript levels of wheat TaCSN5 were induced in response to inoculation with Puccinia striiformis f. sp. tritici (Pst) and treatment with salicylic acid (SA). Overexpression of TaCSN5 in Arabidopsis resulted in increased susceptibility to Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato DC3000 infect

The pathogenic fungus Puccinia helianthi, which causes rust disease and significant economic loss, poses a serious threat to the Helianthus annuus crop. This study is the first to examine the ultrastructure of the spore stages of this rust, aiming to fill the gap in the understanding of Egyptian rusts. The present study aimed to explore the micromorphology and development of pycniospores and aeciospores of Puccinia helianthi on its host, using LM, SEM, and TEM. The immature pycnium grows subepidermally and is bordered by a peripheral layer of pseudoparenchymatous cells. Within the pycnium, uni

Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) is a staple cereal crop in China, with its yield and quality closely linked to national food security. Wheat stripe rust, caused by Puccinia striiformis f. sp. tritici (Pst), is a devastating airborne disease globally that inflicts severe yield losses due to its sudden outbreaks and rapid spread, highlighting an urgent need to identify wheat resistance genes against Pst. Long-chain acyl-CoA synthetases (LACSs) are key enzymes in lipid metabolism and play critical roles in plant stress tolerance, including defense responses against pathogens, across multiple plant s

Wheat leaf rust, caused by Puccinia triticina, is a widespread economically important wheat disease. During infection, P. triticina secretes effectors proteins to manipulate host immunity. Here we identified and characterized the P. triticina effector Pt3863, which is highly expressed during the early phase of infection and significantly enhances fungal virulence. We also identified the wheat receptor-like cytoplasmic kinase TaRLCK176 as a target of Pt3863. Functional assays demonstrated that TaRLCK176 positively regulates wheat resistance against leaf rust and is required for chitin-induced r

RPM1 is a CC-NBS-LRR protein that was first shown to be required for resistance to Pseudomonas syringae pv. maculicola in Arabidopsis thaliana. Our previous study showed that TaRPM1 gene in wheat was upregulated about six times following infection by Puccinia striiformis f. sp. tritici (Pst) under high temperature, compared with normal temperature. To study the function of TaRPM1 in wheat high-temperature seedling-plant (HTSP) resistance to Pst, the full length of TaRPM1 was cloned, with three copies each located on chromosomes 1A, 1B, and 1D. Transient expression of the TaRPM1-GFP fusion prot

In North America, crown rust has emerged as a disease of Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis) and may cause significant damage. After observing crown rust on Poa spp. in Minnesota and on three East Asian buckthorns (Rhamnus crenata, R. davurica, and R. japonica) in North Dakota, we sequenced one to four loci of nine samples for identification and to determine their placement within Puccinia series Coronata. Earlier studies had shown that the P. coronata var. avenae f. sp. avenae clade caused crown rust of Kentucky bluegrass in North America, but phylogenetic analysis identified our samples as a

Sterol 14α-Demethylase Cytochrome P450 (CYP51) protein involved in ergosterol biosynthesis pathways turn out to be a crucial target for the fungicidal compound. However, the recognition mechanism and dynamic behavior of CYP51 in wheat leaf rust pathogen, Puccinia triticina, is still obscure. Previously, a mutation at position 134 (Y134F) was reported in five European isolates of P. triticina, conversely, structural basis of this mutation remains unclear. To address this problem, three-dimensional structure of CYP51 protein from P. triticina was successfully built using homology modeling approa

Wheat stripe/yellow rust, caused by Puccinia striiformis f. sp. tritici (Pst), remains one of the most significant constraints to global wheat production. Genetic resistance breeding is the most effective, economical, and environmentally sustainable strategy for controlling stripe rust. Over the past two decades, advances in genome sequencing, molecular markers and high-throughput genotyping have led to the reporting of numerous Yr genes and an even greater number of quantitative trait loci (QTL, QYr). Alignment of QYr onto a common refence map is therefore required to consolidate dispersed re

Puccinia triticina (Pt) is a heteroecious fungus needing two different plants as primary and alternate hosts throughout its life cycle. Thalictrum spp. were first identified as alternate hosts of Pt in 1921, and over 100 species have been identified. However, within China, only T. petaloideum L., T. minus L., T. minus var. hypoleucum and T. baicalense have been reported as alternate hosts of Pt. During the six-year (2015-2018, 2023-2024) field surveys in Zhangbei County (41.26°N, 115.14°E), Zhangjiakou City, Hebei Province, our research team found rust disease on T. squarrosum. As an obligate biotrophic pathogen, Puccinia triticina (Pt) subverts wheat immunity via effector delivery. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying Pt effector-mediated wheat susceptibility remain largely unexplored. In this study, an effector Pt_20 that is induced expression at the early stage of Pt infection to wheat was identified. Interestingly, the Pt_20 gene exhibits two distinct transcriptional isoforms (Pt_20636, Pt_20807) among Pt races and both are localized in the nucleus, cytoplasm, and plasma membrane. Pt_20636 was able to suppress BAX-mediated cell death in Nicotiana benthami
