Flow visualization analysis of pulsatile flow in elastic straight tubes.

Effects of wall compliance on the flow characteristics were studied by visualizing pulsatile flow in two straight elastic tubes having different compliance and in a rigid tube. The elastic tubes were made of segmented polyether polyurethane and their compliance was adjusted by varying the wall thickness. Their diameter changes were +/- 3.3 and +/- 4.9% for the pressure pulsation between 20 and 250 mm Hg. An acrylic pipe was used for the rigid model. An air-driven artificial heart was used to generate the pulsatile flow having the mean Reynolds number and frequency parameter of 740 and 11.4, re

Effect of pulsatile swirling flow on stenosed arterial blood flow.

The existence of swirling flow phenomena is frequently observed in arterial vessels, but information on the fluid-dynamic roles of swirling flow is still lacking. In this study, the effects of pulsatile swirling inlet flows with various swirling intensities on the flow field in a stenosis model are experimentally investigated using a particle image velocimetry velocity field measurement technique. A pulsatile pump provides cyclic pulsating inlet flow and spiral inserts with two different helical pitches (10D and 10/3D) induce swirling flow in the stenosed channel. Results show that the pulsati

Vascular pulsatility in patients with a pulsatile- or continuous-flow ventricular assist device.

OBJECTIVE: We sought to investigate differences in indices of pulsatility between patients with normal ventricular function and patients with heart failure studied at the time of implantation with continuous-flow or pulsatile-flow left ventricular assist devices. METHODS: Eight patients with normal ventricular function and 22 patients with heart failure were studied. A high-fidelity aortic and left ventricular pressure catheter was inserted retrograde through the aortic valve into the left ventricle, and transit-time flow probes were placed on the aorta and device outflow graft. Hemodynamic w

Pulsatile flow dynamics determine pulmonary arterial architecture.

BACKGROUND: Single ventricle congenital heart disease (SV-CHD) is a uniformly lethal condition. Survival depends upon the Glenn surgery, which shunts venous blood directly to the pulmonary arteries without the support of a pumping ventricle. In the context of this altered circulation (loss of cardiac-driven pulsatility), diverse pulmonary vascular complications develop, severely limiting survival. To date, the relationship between loss of arterial pulsatility and pulmonary vascular changes has not yet been investigated at the cellular level. METHODS: Using combined cardiac catheterization and

Large-Eddy simulation of pulsatile blood flow.

Large-Eddy simulation (LES) is performed to study pulsatile blood flow through a 3D model of arterial stenosis. The model is chosen as a simple channel with a biological type stenosis formed on the top wall. A sinusoidal non-additive type pulsation is assumed at the inlet of the model to generate time dependent oscillating flow in the channel and the Reynolds number of 1200, based on the channel height and the bulk velocity, is chosen in the simulations. We investigate in detail the transition-to-turbulent phenomena of the non-additive pulsatile blood flow downstream of the stenosis. Results s

Pulsatile flow dynamics maintain pulmonary artery architecture.

Single-ventricle congenital heart disease (SV-CHD) is a uniformly lethal condition requiring the Glenn surgery, which as a side effect eliminates arterial pulsatility and contributes to pulmonary vascular complications. In Glenn patients, we quantified pulsatility loss in each dimension of force (flow, pressure, and stretch) using cardiac catheterization and MRI. To model and investigate the individual impact of each dimension of pulsatility loss on the pulmonary vasculature, we applied isolated pulsatile and non-pulsatile mechanical stimuli to pulmonary artery endothelial cells (ECs) in vitro

Pulsatile spiral blood flow through arterial stenosis.

Pulsatile spiral blood flow in a modelled three-dimensional arterial stenosis, with a 75% cross-sectional area reduction, is investigated by using numerical fluid dynamics. Two-equation k-ω model is used for the simulation of the transitional flow with Reynolds numbers 500 and 1000. It is found that the spiral component increases the static pressure in the vessel during the deceleration phase of the flow pulse. In addition, the spiral component reduces the turbulence intensity and wall shear stress found in the post-stenosis region of the vessel in the early stages of the flow pulse. Hence, th

Mechanics of pulsatile transpyloric flow in the pig.

1. In eight conscious pigs equipped with gastric and duodenal cannulae, the relationship of transpyloric flow to gastro-duodenal motor events was evaluated during gastric emptying of 1000 ml of saline. Rates of liquid gastric emptying were correlated with pressures at the antrum, pylorus and duodenum, recorded by a sleeve sensor and multiple perfused side-holes. Transpyloric flow was recorded concurrently by continuous collection and weighing of the duodenal effluent. 2. In three pigs the above measurements were repeated during concurrent videofluoroscopy of gastric emptying after adding 100 m

Medical compression: effects on pulsatile leg blood flow.

AIM: Leg compression bandaging is the mainstay of venous ulcer treatment, yet little is known about the impact of therapeutic compression levels on arterial haemodynamics. In this study, the effect of foot-to-knee, four-layer compression bandaging on below-knee arterial pulsatile blood flow was assessed by nuclear magnetic resonance flowmetry. METHODS: In 14 healthy supine subjects, bilateral pulsatile blood flow measured at five below-knee sites without compression; and during compression of one leg to an average malleolar sub-bandage pressure of 40.7±4.0 mmHg. RESULTS: The forefoot-to-knee

Pulsatile blood flow asymmetry in paired human legs.

Average leg blood flow has been extensively measured using non-invasive methods, but knowledge concerning pulsatile flow at specific leg cross-sections in normal or vascularly impaired limbs is quite limited. The present study used nuclear magnetic resonance flowmetry to address two fundamental questions; (1) to what extent are pulsatile flow differences present between paired-legs? and (2) is paired-leg flow symmetry affected by the presence of lower extremity arterial disease (LEAD)? Comparisons of left-right leg pulsatile blood flow (ml/min), perfusion (ml/min/100cc), and arterial status in

Waveform dependence of pulsatile flow in a stenosed channel.

Bloodflow in arteries often shows a rich variety of vortical flows, which are dominated by the complex geometry of blood vessels, the dynamic pulsation of blood flow, and the complicated boundary conditions. With a two-dimensional model of unsteady flow in a stenosed channel, the pulsatile influence on such vortical fluid dynamics has been numerically studied in terms of waveform dependence on physiological pulsation. Results are presented for unsteady flows downstream of the stenosed portion with variation in the wavefiorms of systole and diastole. Overall, a train of propagating vortex waves

Transitional turbulent flow in a stenosed coronary artery with a physiological pulsatile flow.

The turbulence in the blood flow, caused by plaque deposition on the arterial wall, increases by the combined effect of the complex plaque geometries and the pulsatile blood flow. The correlation between the plaque geometry, the pulsatile inlet flow and the induced turbulence in a constricted artery is investigated in this study. Pressure drop, flow velocity and wall shear stress are determined for stenosed coronary artery models with three different degrees of asymmetric stenosis and for different heart working conditions. A Computational Fluid Dynamics model, validated against experimental d

Effects of the pulsatile flow settings on pulsatile waveforms and hemodynamic energy in a PediVAS centrifugal pump.

The objective of this study was to test different pulsatile flow settings of the PediVAS centrifugal pump to seek an optimum setting for pulsatile flow to achieve better pulsatile energy and minimal backflow. The PediVAS centrifugal pump and the conventional pediatric clinical circuit, including a pediatric membrane oxygenator, arterial filter, arterial cannula, and 1/4 in circuit tubing were used. The circuit was primed with 40% glycerin water mixture. Postcannula pressure was maintained at 40 mm Hg by a Hoffman clamp. The experiment was conducted at 800 ml/min of pump flow with a modified pu

Arterial wall histology in chronic pulsatile-flow and continuous-flow device circulatory support.

BACKGROUND: Continuous-flow (CF) ventricular assist devices (VAD) are an established option for treatment of end-stage heart failure. However, the effect of long-term CF with lack of peripheral arterial wall motions on blood pressure regulation and end-organ arterial wall sclerosis, especially in the case of long-term support (> 3 years), remains unclear. METHODS: Tissue samples obtained at autopsy from liver, kidney, coronary arteries, and brain from 27 VAD recipients supported for > 180 days between 2000 and 2010 were histologically examined to assess vascular alterations, including perivas

Infectious complications after pulsatile-flow and continuous-flow left ventricular assist device implantation.

BACKGROUND: Infection is a significant source of morbidity and mortality after left ventricular assist device (LVAD) implantation. Newer generation continuous-flow (CF) LVADs are smaller, requiring smaller pump pockets and drive-line exit sites as compared with pulsatile-flow (PF) devices. With their recent adoption, CF device patients benefit from improved provider experience in the detection and treatment of infectious complications. Given these advances in design and experience, we examined the incidence of infectious complications in patients receiving CF and PF devices. METHODS: We revie

Neonatal cavopulmonary assist: pulsatile versus steady-flow pulmonary perfusion.

BACKGROUND: Morbidity and mortality associated with single-ventricle physiology decrease substantially once a systemic venous, rather than systemic arterial, source of pulmonary blood flow is established. Cavopulmonary assist has potential to eliminate critical dependence on the problematic systemic-to-pulmonary shunt as a source of pulmonary blood flow in neonates. We have previously demonstrated feasibility of neonatal cavopulmonary assist under steady-flow conditions. We hypothesized that pulsatile pulmonary perfusion would further improve pulmonary hemodynamics. METHODS: Lambs (weight 7.2

Numerical modeling of pulsatile turbulent flow in stenotic vessels.

Pulsatile turbulent flow in stenotic vessels has been numerically modeled using the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equation approach. The commercially available computational fluid dynamics code (CFD), FLUENT, has been used for these studies. Two different experiments were modeled involving pulsatile flow through axisymmetric stenoses. Four different turbulence models were employed to study their influence on the results. It was found that the low Reynolds number k-omega turbulence model was in much better agreement with previous experimental measurements than both the low and high Reynolds n

Compression-induced pulsatile blood flow changes in human legs.

Initial and sustained (7-h) impacts of foot-to-knee compression bandaging on leg arterial pulsatile blood flow were assessed by nuclear magnetic resonance flowmetry in eight healthy supine subjects. A widely used bandaging method (zinc impregnated gauze + Coban) and a slight variant (Coban only) were applied one week apart to one leg. Blood flow was measured on each day of bandage application before and after bandaging and after 7 h of normal activity. Initial mean sub-bandage pressures (lateral gaiter) were between 28.4 and 28.9 mmHg but were significantly reduced after 7 h to 16.3-19.4 mmHg.
