Inhibitory effect of Pulsatilla chinensis polysaccharides on glioma.

Malignant glioma is a very devastating disease. Conventional surgery, radio-and chemotherapy are of limited benefit to improve the cure of patients with malignant astrocytomas. In this research, we evaluated the inhibitory effect of Pulsatilla chinensis polysaccharides (PCPS) on glioma in vivo and in vitro. PCPS had a significant anti-proliferative effect on C6 glioma in vitro assay. Meanwhile a remarkable inhibitory effect PCPS on the growth of C6 glioma and prolongation of life survival could be observed in vivo, comparable to carmustine (BCNU) administration. Moreover PCPS treatment to tumo

Antischistosomal Properties of Hederacolchiside A1 Isolated from Pulsatilla chinensis.

Background: Schistosomiasis is a major neglected disease for which the current control strategy involves mass treatment with praziquantel, the only available drug. Hence, there is an urgent need to develop new antischistosomal compounds. Methods: The antischistosomal activity of hederacolchiside A1 (HSA) were determined by total or female worm burden reductions in mice harboring Schistosoma japonicum or S. mansoni. Pathology parameters were detected on HSA against 1-day-old S. japonicum-harboring mice. Moreover, we confirmed the antischistosomal effect of HSA on newly transformed schistosomula

Qualitative and quantitative analysis of triterpenoids in different tissues of Pulsatilla chinensis.

Pulsatilla chinensis (P.chinensis) is a traditional Chinese medicine used for the treatment of intestinal amebiasis diseases, vaginal trichomoniasis and bacterial infections. Tritepenoid saponins were important components of P.chinensis. Therefore, we asssessmented expression profiling of triterpenoids in different fresh tissues of P.chinensis by ultra high performance liquid chromatography coupled to quadrupole-time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UHPLC-Q-TOF-MS) and ultra high performance liquid chromatography coupled to triple quadrupole mass spectrometry (UHPLC-QQQ-MS). Firstly, we identified

Polydopamine-encapsulated modified Pulsatilla decoction: a strategy to enhance ulcerative colitis therapy.

BACKGROUND: In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), ulcerative colitis (UC) is often categorized as "protracted dysentery." Pulsatilla Decoction has been reported to exert therapeutic benefits in patients with protracted dysentery. To potentially improve therapeutic outcomes in ulcerative colitis, we prepared a modified Pulsatilla Decoction (MPD). Preliminary clinical observations have suggested that MPD may alleviate symptoms in UC patients. However, rectal enema of MPD is often limited by suboptimal patient compliance and relatively short colonic retention. These limitations underscore the ne

Sustainable antibiotic reduction in poultry production with Pulsatilla saponins and herbal supplementation.

The prolonged use of antibiotics in poultry production promotes the accumulation and spread of antibiotic resistance genes (ARG), raising concerns for animal health and public safety. Developing effective antibiotic alternatives that support performance while limiting resistance risk is therefore a priority. Using broiler chickens as a model, this study evaluated the effects of Pulsatilla saponins, alone or combined with a compound herbal formulation, on growth performance, immune responses, cecal microbiota, and the intestinal resistome, with an antibiotic-treated group as reference. Growth a

Quinone reductase inducing activity of the dichloromethane /ethanol extract of the roots of Pulsatilla chinensis.

Agents with phase II enzyme inducing activities play important roles in intervening in the carcinogenic process. In the present study, the quinone reductase (QR) inducing activities of nine known triterpene saponins from the dichloromethane/ethanol extract of the roots of Pulsatilla chinensis were tested. The oleanane saponins exhibited more potent QR inducing activities than the lupane saponins, and the CD value of the compound with the most potent QR inducing activity was 1.1 microM. The chemopreventive activity of the dichloromethane/ethanol extract was also evaluated using the DMBA-induced

Isolation and characterisation of Pulsatilla Radix-utilising bacteria Pediococcus pentosaceus PR-1 from human faeces.

Although probiotics have been isolated from different sources, few were isolated from traditional Chinese medicine. The current study firstly isolates Pulsatilla Radix-utilising Pediococcus pentosaceus PR-1 from human faeces. Subsequently, the tolerance of PR-1 to low pH, bile salts, simulated gastric juice and succus entericus, antioxidant activity, antimicrobial activity, cholesterol assimilation and antibiotics susceptibility were investigated. After 2 h of incubation at pH 2.0, over 80% of PR-1 survived. The cell viability of PR-1 at 2 h under 0.1% bile salt condition was 99.2%. The surviv

New insights into the mechanisms of modified Pulsatilla decoction in alleviating chemotherapy-induced intestinal mucositis.

Chemotherapy-induced intestinal mucositis (IM) is a prevalent complication affecting up to 80% of cancer patients undergoing treatment. Current therapies focus on symptomatic relief rather than addressing the underlying mechanism. Recent advances in integrative medicine highlight the potential of traditional Chinese medicine formulations as alternatives or adjuncts to existing therapies. In this context, this editorial discusses the recent results of a study published by Qiu et al, which investigates the multifaceted potential of modified Pulsatilla decoction (PD), a formulation of PD with lic

Water Extract of Pulsatilla koreana Nakai Inhibits Osteoclast Differentiation and Alleviates Ovariectomy-Induced Bone Loss.

Pulsatilla koreana Nakai (P. koreana) is a perennial herb traditionally used to treat malaria and fever. Although the pharmacological properties of P. koreana have been explored in various contexts, its effects on bone diseases, such as osteoporosis, remain poorly studied. In this study, we investigated the effects of water extracts of P. koreana (WEPK) on osteoclasts, which play a crucial role in bone remodeling, and an ovariectomized (OVX) mouse model, which mimics osteoporosis. Phytochemical profiling of WEPK revealed several compounds that regulate bone or fat metabolism. WEPK suppressed o

Pulsatilla decoction alleviates DSS-induced UC by activating FXR-ASBT pathways to ameliorate disordered bile acids homeostasis.

Ethnopharmacological relevance: Pulsatilla decoction (PD) is a classical prescription for the treatment of ulcerative colitis. Previous studies have demonstrated that the therapeutic efficacy of PD is closely associated with the activation of Farnesoid X receptor (FXR). The activity of FXR is regulated by apical sodium-dependent bile acid transporter (ASBT), and the FXR-ASBT cascade reaction, centered around bile acid receptor FXR, plays a pivotal role in maintaining bile acid metabolic homeostasis to prevent the occurrence and progression of ulcerative colitis (UC). Aim of the study: To eluci

Pulsatilla decoction suppresses matrix metalloproteinase-7-mediated leukocyte recruitment in dextran sulfate sodium-induced colitis mouse model.

BACKGROUND: Intestinal inflammation is considered to be an important characteristic of ulcerative colitis (UC) and the current medical treatments for UC are usually proposed to suppress abnormal intestinal immune responses. Pulsatilla decoction (PD), a traditional Chinese medicine, is frequently used in UC treatments in Asian countries; however, the mechanism of the action of PD remains unclear. In the present study, the mechanism of the action of PD was elucidated in the dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced colitis mouse model, a model to mimic UC. METHODS: Murine colitis was evaluated by co
