BACKGROUND: Pulsed radiofrequency (PRF) treatment is defined as the delivery of short pulses of radiofrequency via a needle tip, which does not result in an actual thermal lesions. There are mixed views regarding the use of PRF for trigeminal neuralgia (TN). In our opinion, one of the main reasons for the contrasting views is the insufficient PRF dose employed in previous studies. In a recent study on the effects of PRF on resiniferatoxin-induced neuropathic pain in an animal model, the anti-allodynic effects of PRF were significantly greater when the PRF exposure duration was increased from 2

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Trigeminal neuralgia is a sudden, unilateral, stabbing pain in the distribution of one or more branches of the fifth cranial nerve, with an overall prevalence ranging between 0.03 and 0.3%. While conservative treatments may offer temporary relief, many patients experience chronic headaches associated with their neuralgia. Invasive treatments are available for patients with intractable neuralgia; however, they may cause permanent tissue damage and often do not provide relief. This article examines pulsed radiofrequency (PRF) ablation (RFA) of the trigeminal nerve as a minimal

Eagle's syndrome is a rare cause of craniofacial pain caused by impingement of adjacent neurovascular elements by an elongated styloid process or by a calcified stylohyoid ligament. There is a wide spectrum of clinical presentations, which encompasses craniofacial pain, oropharyngeal pain, otalgia, headache, and vertigo. Typically, the glossopharyngeal nerve gets entrapped, giving rise to characteristic orofacial pain. The diagnosis of Eagle's syndrome is confirmed radiologically, and the management includes pharmacotherapy and surgical removal of the styloid process. Moreover, minimally invas

There are currently 6 reviews on (pulsed) radiofrequency (RF) for the management of spinal pain. Two reviews on interventional pain management techniques in general also discuss RF. The outcomes of those reviews depend on the type of studies included and the opinion of the reviewers, which may result in different evidence levels. Radiofrequency denervation at the cervical and lumbar level has produced the most solid evidence. The differences in treatment outcome registered in the 5 randomized controlled trials (RCTs) regarding lumbar facet denervation can be attributed to differences in patien

Meralgia paresthetica (MP) is one of the most common mononeuropathies of the lower limb, characterized by injury or compression of the lateral cutaneous femoral nerve at the level of the anterior superior iliac spine and inguinal ligament. Many predisposing factors, such as weight gain, obesity, and restrictive clothing, contribute to the injury of the lateral cutaneous femoral nerve along its course from the pelvis towards the thigh. Although a great number of cases are successfully treated with conservative measures, a subgroup of patients suffer chronic dysesthetic pain with intermittent fl

BACKGROUND: Phantom limb pain can be challenging to treat. We present a patient who developed severe phantom limb pain after revision of her lower extremity amputation due to the continued progression of peripheral vascular disease. Multiple treatment modalities had been tried without success. Pulsed radiofrequency has been successfully used to manage a number of pain syndromes.
OBJECTIVE: The present case report describes the use of pulsed radiofrequency treatment for phantom limb pain.
METHODS: The authors initially preformed regional blocks of femoral and sciatic nerve with 0.375% bupivic

BACKGROUND: Ilioinguinal neuropathy is a rare but disabling condition. The condition may arise spontaneously or in the setting of pelvic surgery. To date, most therapeutic options have been limited to neuropathic pain medications, anti-inflammatory medications, nerve blocks with local anesthetics, or neurectomy. Long-term results of non-surgical interventions are fair at best. We present a case of chronic ilioinguinal neuropathy treated with pulsed radiofrequency.
OBJECTIVE: To examine the efficacy of pulsed radiofrequency (PRF) lesioning on pain in ilioinguinal neuropathy.
METHOD: A 58-year

The efficacy of pulsed radiofrequency (PRF) in the treatment of painful lumbosacral spondylosis has been reported. This case series reviews 22 consecutive patients presenting to clinic who had been previously treated with PRF with good results. Patients being prescribed opioids were excluded. During the PRF application, tissue temperature was limited to 43 degrees C. A minimum of 200 mA of current was delivered in each case. The minimum current (at 50 Hz) necessary to stimulate the involved nerve was recorded. The duration of time from PRF treatment until the patient requested a subsequent app

The aim of this prospective, randomized, double-blinded study was to evaluate the effect of pulsed radiofrequency (PRF) in comparison with conventional radiofrequency (CRF) in the treatment of idiopathic trigeminal neuralgia. A total of 40 patients with idiopathic trigeminal neuralgia were included. The 20 patients in each group were randomly assigned to one of the two treatment groups. Each patient in the Group 1 was treated with CRF, whereas each patient in the Group 2 was treated by PRF. Evaluation parameters were: pain intensity using a Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), patient satisfaction usi

Trigeminal neuralgia (TN) is a pain syndrome characterized by pain in the trigeminal area often accompanied by a brief facial spasm or tic. The purpose of our study was to investigate the efficacy and clinical utility of CT-guided pulsed radiofrequency (PRF) for treatment of TN. Patients who were diagnosed with severe TN between September 2010 and October 2010 at Beijing Tiantan Hospital were included. Pulsed radiofrequency treatment (PRFT) was employed to treat TN. To verify the accurate needle position, a thin-section cranial CT scan was performed by using a multidetector CT scanner. Three-d

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic inflammatory disease involving multiple joints. The cervical spine is often affected, and cases involving atlantoaxial joint can lead to instability. Anterior atlantoaxial subluxation in RA patients can lead to posterior neck pain or occipital headache because of compression of the C2 ganglion or nerve. Here, we report the successful treatment of a RA patient with occipital radiating headache using pulsed radiofrequency therapy at the C2 dorsal root ganglion.

OBJECTIVE: Current therapies for sacroiliac joint (SIJ) dysfunction offer discouraging results in alleviating low back pain. The innervation and target nerves for radiofrequency denervation (RFD) of the SIJ remain unclear. We present a prospective case series on the treatment of intractable SIJ dysfunction with pulsed radiofrequency denervation (PRFD) of lateral branches from L4-S3.
INTERVENTIONS: A total of 126 patients with presumptive SIJ dysfunction based on history and physical examination underwent arthrographically confirmed steroid/local anesthetic SIJ injection. Fifty-two patients (4

BACKGROUND: Pulsed radiofrequency (PRF) is a neuromodulatory technique that has been widely used for pain management and has recently gained attention as a nondestructive alternative to conventional radiofrequency ablation (RFA), particularly for peripheral neuropathic pain. Over the past decade, PRF has been increasingly investigated for its potential benefits in various chronic pain conditions.
OBJECTIVE: This review aims to summarize the fundamental principles, mechanisms of action, available evidence, and clinical applications of PRF in chronic pain management.

INTRODUCTION: Many laser and light devices have reported to be successful in the treatment of the flushing, background erythema, and telangiectasias that characterize erythematotelangiectatic rosacea including pulsed dye laser, potassium titanyl phosphate, intense pulsed light, and dual-wavelength lasers. A technology called ELOS (electro-optical synergy) combines pulsed light or laser with bipolar radiofrequency. This combination, developed in 2000, was based on the premise that these two forms of energy could be synergistic. One such device (Aurora SRA-skin-rejuvenation advanced handpiece, S

ObjectiveCervical radicular pain is defined as pain arising in the arm caused by irritation of a cervical spinal nerve or its roots. Although many treatment modalities are described in the literature, the available evidence for efficacy is not sufficient to allow definitive conclusions. The goal of this study was to establish the benefits and prognostic factors of pulsed radiofrequency (PRF) on the adjacent cervical dorsal root ganglia (DRG) of cervical radicular pain patients.MethodsA retrospective study of PRF treatment of patients with cervical radicular pain was carried out. BACKGROUND: Chronic postsurgical thoracic pain (CPTP) represents a major therapeutic challenge characterized by an absence of clinical studies to guide treatment. Recently, the implementation of pulsed radiofrequency (RF) has generated intense interest in the medical community as a safe and potentially effective treatment for neuropathic pain. To date, there are no studies comparing pulsed RF to more conventional therapeutic modalities for any pain condition.
OBJECTIVES: To compare treatment outcomes between pharmacotherapy, pulsed RF of the intercostal nerves (ICN) and pulsed RF of the dorsa

OBJECTIVES: Percutaneous radiofrequency denervation of the medial dorsal branch is often used for treatment of chronic low back pain originating from intervertebral facets, which is sometimes associated with a low success rate and a higher incidence of recurrence of pain. We theorized that implementing pulsed radiofrequency treatment to dorsal root ganglion would increase the probability of successful pain relief.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: 150 patients diagnosed with CLBP of a confirmed facet origin were included in a prospective randomized controlled trial and were randomly divided into three eq
