Human pythiosis.

Pythiosis is a cosmopolitan granulomatous disease caused by an aquatic fungus Pythium insidiosum which usually occurs in horses, cattle, dogs, cats or fishes. There have been 28 cases of human pythiosis published in the literature. Twenty three patients have been reported from all over Thailand. Human pythiosis presents in one of three clinical forms: cutaneous or subcutaneous, systemic or vascular and ophthalmic (e.g., corneal ulcer or keratitis). Systemic antibiotics or antimycotics are not effective in the treatment of this infection. A saturated solution of KI gives a beneficial result onl

Pythiosis in Africa.

We report the first case of pythiosis from Africa in an 8-month-old dog with a chronic and ulcerative cutaneous lesion. The etiologic agent belonged to the genus Pythium. Phylogenetic analysis placed the isolate in a sister group to the other P. insidiosum strains. However, the isolate may belong to a new Pythium species.

Experimental pythiosis in rabbits.

Rabbits were injected by subcutaneous, intraperitoneal and intravenous routes with suspensions of motile zoospores of a Pythium sp. isolated from a subcutaneous lesion of a horse in north Queensland. Some animals injected by the subcutaneous route were also treated by cortisone injections. Animals in each group were found to be highly susceptible to infection. Injection by the subcutaneous route resulted in progressive granulomatous eosinophilic abscesses in all normal and cortisone-treated animals. Preferential hepatic invasion developing into severe necrotizing hepatitis was the most common

Gastrointestinal pythiosis in two cats.

Two young adult male Domestic Shorthair cats living in the southeastern United States were evaluated for signs attributable to partial intestinal obstruction. Physical examination indicated a palpable abdominal mass in each animal. Exploratory laparotomy revealed a large extraluminal mass involving the ileum and mesentery with adjacent mesenteric lymphadenopathy in cat No. 1 and an abscessed mass in the distal duodenum in cat No. 2. Mass resection and intestinal anastomosis were performed in both cats. Histologic evaluation indicated that the intestinal lesions involved primarily the outer smo

Pythiosis of the digestive tract in sheep.

Cutaneous and rhinofacial infections by Pythium insidiosum have previously been reported in sheep in Brazil. In the current study, a new form of pythiosis involving the alimentary tract of 2 nursing lambs from 2 different farms in the semiarid region of Brazil is described. The first lamb showed food regurgitation, lethargy, and anorexia, and died 5 days after the presentation of clinical signs. The second lamb had no history of gastrointestinal disease before death. Necropsy findings were similar in both lambs. The mucosa of the esophagus, reticulum, rumen, omasum, and abomasum showed ulcerat

Human cutaneous pythiosis: A case report.

Human pythiosis is a rarely encountered yet potentially harmful infectious disease. It is mostly caused by Pythium insidiosum, an aquatic fungal-like organism, and primarily manifests in tropical locales such as India and Thailand. Cutaneous/subcutaneous pythiosis accounts for a small proportion of all clinical forms. The relationship between cutaneous pythiosis and hemoglobinopathy remains uncertain, unlike the vascular form. The histopathology of the disease demonstrates eosinophilic granulomatous inflammation and dense eosinophilic material enveloping the organism, known as the Splendore-Ho

Pythiosis, lagenidiosis, and zygomycosis in small animals.

Pythiosis, lagenidiosis, and zygomycosis affect animals living in temperate, tropical, and subtropical climates, and these diseases are often fatal. Although Pythium insidiosum, Conidiobolus species, and Basidiobolus species have been recognized as pathogens for several years, members of the genus Lagenidium have been identified as a cause of oomycosis in dogs only recently. Pythiosis, lagenidiosis, and zygomycosis share similar clinical and histologic characteristics, making them difficult to distinguish from one another; however, distinguishing between these pathogens is important because of

GASTRIC PYTHIOSIS IN A BACTRIAN CAMEL ( BACTRIANUS CAMELUS).

Pythium insidiosum, an aquatic oomycete, causes chronic lesions in the skin and digestive tract of multiple species. A captive-bred Bactrian camel ( Camelus bactrianus) showed clinical signs of lethargy and weight loss in a clinical course of 30 days, with no response to treatment. At necropsy, the abdominal cavity had approximately 32 L of a yellow, turbid fluid with fibrin. The third compartment of the stomach (C-3) showed a focal area of rupture covered with fibrin. Close to this area, the C-3 wall was thickened and firm, demonstrating irregular, yellow, and friable areas on cut surface (ku

Vulvar pythiosis in two captive camels (Camelus dromedarius).

Two camels (Camelus dromedarius), 3- and 4-years-old, respectively, from an eastern Tennessee wildlife farm presented with persistent weight loss and large vulvar masses. An initial biopsy of the vulvar mass of one of the camels performed by a local veterinarian showed eosinophilic dermatitis. An allergic or parasitic dermatitis was suspected. The two camels were treated with one dose of sodium iodide (66 mg/kg, in 1.0 L of normosolR, IV) and ivermectin 1% (200 ug/kg PO). Upon presentation at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital, University of Tennessee, additional biopsies of the masses again rev
