Quantum Cluster Equilibrium Theory for Multicomponent Liquids.

In this work, we present a new theory to treat multicomponent liquids based on quantum-chemically calculated clusters. The starting point is the binary quantum cluster equilibrium theory, which is able to treat binary systems. The theory provides one equation with two unknowns. In order to obtain another linearly independent equation, the conservation of mass is used. However, increasing the number of components leads to more unknowns, and this requires linearly independent equations. We address this challenge by introducing a generalization of the conservation of arbitrary quantities accompan

Quantum Information Theory on Sparse Wave Functions and Applications for Quantum Chemistry.

In recent years Quantum Computing prominently entered in the field of Computational Chemistry, importing and transforming computational methods and ideas originally developed within other disciplines, such as Physics, Mathematics and Computer Science into algorithms able to estimate quantum properties of atoms and molecules on present and future quantum devices. An important role in this contamination process is attributed to Quantum Information techniques, having the 2-fold role of contributing to the analysis of electron correlation and entanglements and guiding the construction of wave func

Mixed Quantum/Classical Theory Approach to Rotationally Inelastic Molecular Collisions Implemented on a Quantum Computer.

All elements of a quantum algorithm for calculations of rotationally inelastic molecule + atom scattering within the framework of a mixed quantum/classical theory are outlined. In this approach, the rotational motion of the molecule is described quantum mechanically using the time-dependent Schrödinger equation, while the scattering process of two collision partners is treated classically. The matrix of potential coupling is precomputed on a classical processor, whereas the quantum hardware is used to propagate the system of coupled equations for the rotational state-to-state transitions. Electron Density Geometry and the Quantum Theory of Atoms in Molecules.

A novel form of charge density analysis, that of isosurface curvature redistribution, is formulated and applied to the toy problem of carbonyl oxygen activation in formaldehyde. The isosurface representation of the electron charge density allows us to incorporate the rigorous geometric constraints of closed surfaces toward the analysis and chemical interpretation of the charge density response to perturbations. Visual inspection of 2D isosurface motion resulting from applied external electric fields reveals how the isosurface curvature flows within and between atoms and that a molecule can be

Quantum Statistics of Vortices from a Dual Theory of the XY Ferromagnet.

We extend the well-known mapping between the easy-plane ferromagnet and electrostatics in d=2 spatial dimensions to dynamical and quantum phenomena in a d=2+1 spacetime. Ferromagnetic vortices behave like quantum particles with an electric charge equal to the vortex number and a magnetic flux equal to the transverse spin of the vortex core. Vortices with half-integer core spin exhibit fermionic statistics.

Quantum-electrodynamical time-dependent density functional theory within Gaussian atomic basis.

Inspired by the formulation of quantum-electrodynamical time-dependent density functional theory (QED-TDDFT) by Rubio and co-workers [Flick et al., ACS Photonics 6, 2757-2778 (2019)], we propose an implementation that uses dimensionless amplitudes for describing the photonic contributions to QED-TDDFT electron-photon eigenstates. This leads to a Hermitian QED-TDDFT coupling matrix that is expected to facilitate the future development of analytic derivatives. Through a Gaussian atomic basis implementation of the QED-TDDFT method, we examined the effect of dipole self-energy, rotating-wave appro

Penicillin's catalytic mechanism revealed by inelastic neutrons and quantum chemical theory.

Penicillin, travels through bodily fluids, targeting and acylatively inactivating enzymes responsible for cell-wall synthesis in gram-positive bacteria. Somehow, it avoids metabolic degradation remaining inactive en route. To resolve this ability to switch from a non-active, to a highly reactive form, we investigated the dynamic structure-activity relationship of penicillin by inelastic neutron spectroscopy, reaction kinetics, NMR and multi-scale theoretical modelling (QM/MM and post-HF ab initio). Results show that by a self-activating physiological pH-dependent two-step proton-mediated proce

Time-dependent quantum dynamics of NO(X) + Ar: Rotational excitation pathways and comparison with mixed quantum/classical theory.

We present time-dependent quantum wavepacket simulations of inelastic NO(X) + Ar collisions using the Multi-Configurational Time-Dependent Hartree (MCTDH) method. The computed state-to-state cross sections and opacity functions agree well with time-independent close-coupled calculations. The time-dependent populations and rotational couplings provide a dynamical perspective on the well-known propensity behavior of this near-homonuclear system. In particular, they reveal how the established interplay between parity-conserving Δj = 2 and parity-breaking Δj = 1 coupling pathways develops during t

Boundary memory in ultrafast field emission: a two-time quantum statistical theory.

Ultrafast field emission is usually modelled by evaluating the stationary tunnelling current at the instantaneous driving field. We show that this fails whenever the emitting surface has electronic structure near the Fermi level: the vacuum escape channel reacts back on the occupied boundary spectrum that feeds it, and because that spectrum relaxes on a finite timescale the emitted current carries memory of the field's recent history. Formulating the driven emission problem on the Keldysh contour and propagating the boundary Green functions with a material specific surface spectrum, we find tw

Unified theory of internal conversion and fluorescence under macroscopic quantum electrodynamics framework.

We develop a unified first-principles formulation of fluorescence and internal conversion (IC) within the framework of macroscopic quantum electrodynamics (QED). For molecules with negligible spin-orbit coupling, the approach accounts for both radiative and non-radiative processes in complex photonic environments. Our theory reveals that the IC, fluorescence, and two quantum electrodynamic non-adiabatic emission (QED-NAE) channels can all be regarded as non-adiabatic processes. First-principles simulations not only recover the established Chance-Prock-Silbey description of emitter-surface inte

Coupled-Cluster Theory for Water Empowered by Quantum Fragmentation and Deep Learning.

Water exhibits many anomalous properties, which have given rise to uninterrupted interest in it. A large number of theoretical models have been proposed to elucidate the unique behavior of water, yet the long-sought-after "universal water model" capable of describing the properties of water across diverse thermodynamic conditions remains elusive. Herein, combining advanced fragment-based quantum mechanical calculation and deep learning approach, we present a Deep neural network Potential at the Coupled Cluster considering single, double, and perturbative triple excitations (CCSD(T)) level of t

Theory of Magnetic Properties in Quantum Electrodynamics Environments: Application to Molecular Aromaticity.

In this work, we present ab initio cavity quantum electrodynamics (QED) methods which include interactions with a static magnetic field and nuclear spin degrees of freedom using different treatments of the quantum electromagnetic field. We derive explicit expressions for QED-HF magnetizability, nuclear shielding, and spin-spin coupling tensors. We apply this theory to explore the influence of the cavity field on the magnetizability of saturated, unsaturated, and aromatic hydrocarbons, showing the effects of different polarization orientations and coupling strengths. We also examine how the cav

Quantum-Electrodynamical Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory Description of Molecules in Optical Cavities.

We introduce a quantum-electrodynamical time-dependent density functional theory with a tensor-product representation (QED-TDDFT-TP) to model molecules strongly coupled to quantized cavity fields. By combining real-space electronic wave functions with truncated Fock-space photon states, the method captures light-matter correlations at a computational cost close to standard DFT. Benchmark calculations show good agreement with QED-FCI and QED-CASCI for ground-state energies and polaritonic spectra. Applications to weakly bound dimers─including (H2)2, Ar2, (H2O)2, and HF─demonstrate that cavity c

Theory of multichromophoric coherent resonance energy transfer: a polaronic quantum master equation approach.

The approach of second order time local quantum master equation in the polaron picture, which has been employed for a theory of coherent resonance energy transfer, is extended for general multichromophore systems. Explicit expressions for all the kernel and inhomogeneous terms are derived, which can be calculated by any standard numerical procedure. The theory is then applied to a model of donor-bridge-acceptor system moderately coupled to bosonic bath. The results are compared with those based on the theory of Förster's resonance energy transfer. It is shown that coherently coupled multichrom

Detection of a Planar Tetracoordinate Hydrogen within the Indium Framework by Quantum Dynamics Theory.

In this work, we consider the question how to detect the planar tetracoordination hydrogen geometry which was recently proposed by electronic structure calculations on the In4H+ system (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2024, 63, e202317312; e202400927; e202403214). Keeping the C4v symmetry, a two-dimensional model of In4H+ is designed to build the nonadiabatic Hamiltonian operator with the lowest-lying singlet and triplet states coupled with spin-orbit coupling. The electronic energies in fitting the potential energy matrix are computed at either the MRCI or CCSD (T) level. Having constructed Hamiltonian

Non-Hermitian symmetry breaking and Lee-Yang theory for quantum XYZ and clock models.

Lee-Yang theory offers a unifying framework for understanding classical phase transitions and dynamical quantum phase transitions through the analysis of partition functions and Loschmidt echoes. Recently, this framework was extended to characterize quantum phase transitions of quantum Ising models by introducing the concepts of non-Hermitian parity-symmetry breaking and fidelity zeros. Here, we generalize the theory by studying a broad class of quantum models, including the XY, the XXZ, the XYZ, and the Z_{p} clock models in one dimension, subject to a complex magnetic field. For the XY, XXZ,

Density Matrix Embedding Theory-Based Multiconfigurational Quantum Chemistry Approach to Lanthanide Single-Ion Magnets.

Accurate and efficient theoretical descriptions of lanthanide systems based on ab initio electronic structure theory remain highly challenging due to the complex interplay of strong electronic correlation and significant relativistic effects in 4f electrons. The composite multiconfigurational quantum chemistry method that combines the state-averaged complete active space self-consistent field (SA-CASSCF) approach with subsequent state interaction (SI) treatment of spin-orbit coupling (SOC), abbreviated as CASSCF-SO, has emerged as the preferred method for ab initio studies of lanthanide system

Polaronic quantum master equation theory of inelastic and coherent resonance energy transfer for soft systems.

This work extends the theory of coherent resonance energy transfer [S. Jang, J. Chem. Phys. 131, 164101 (2009)] by including quantum mechanical inelastic effects due to modulation of donor-acceptor electronic coupling. Within the approach of the second order time local quantum master equation (QME) in the polaron picture and under the assumption that the bath degrees of freedom modulating the electronic coupling are independent of other modes, a general time evolution equation for the reduced system density operator is derived.
