Quercetin and isorhamnetin aglycones are the main metabolites of dietary quercetin in cerebrospinal fluid.

SCOPE: Reports on the protective effect of certain foods on brain functions are numerous; however, the permeability of the brain barriers by food components is still hardly recognised. There have been in vitro studies aimed at demonstrating this possibility, but not much is known about this phenomenon in in vivo systems. The objective of the study was to determine the metabolites of dietary quercetin (Q) in urine, blood plasma and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) after intra-rumen administration of Q rich onion dry skin in an animal model. METHODS AND RESULTS: Eleven sheep had permanently implanted

Bioavailability of the flavonol quercetin in neonatal calves after oral administration of quercetin aglycone or rutin.

Polyphenols, such as flavonoids, are secondary plant metabolites with potentially health-promoting properties. In newborn calves flavonoids may improve health status, but little is known about the systemically availability of flavonoids in calves to exert biological effects. The aim of this study was to investigate the oral bioavailability of the flavonol quercetin, applied either as quercetin aglycone (QA) or as its glucorhamnoside rutin (RU), in newborn dairy calves. Twenty-one male newborn German Holstein calves were fed equal amounts of colostrum and milk replacer according to body weight.

Quercetin modulates keratoconus metabolism in vitro.

Corneal scarring is the result of a disease, infection or injury. The resulting scars cause significant loss of vision or even blindness. To-date, the most successful treatment is corneal transplantation, but it does not come without side effects. One of the corneal dystrophies that are correlated with corneal scarring is keratoconus (KC). The onset of the disease is still unknown; however, altered cellular metabolism has been linked to promoting the fibrotic phenotype and therefore scarring. We have previously shown that human keratoconus cells (HKCs) have altered metabolic activity when comp

Protective effects of quercetin and quercetin-5',8-disulfonate against carbon tetrachloride-caused oxidative liver injury in mice.

Oxidative stress is one of the major factors in the pathogenesis of liver disease. Quercetin is a plant-based antioxidant traditionally used as a treatment for hepatic injury, but its poor solubility affects its bioavailability. We here report the regulative effects on hepatoprotection and absorption in mice of quercetin sulfation to form quercetin-5',8-disulfonate (QS), a novel synthetic compound. Oral administration of both QS and the parent quercetin at 100, 200 and 500 mg/kg·bw prior to acute CCl4 oxidative damage in mice, effectively attenuated serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspart

The role of quercetin in NLRP3-associated inflammation.

Quercetin is a natural flavonoid that is widely found in fruits and vegetables. As an important flavonoid, it exhibits a wide range of biological activities, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antiviral, immunomodulatory, and analgesic activities. Quercetin exerts powerful antioxidant activity by regulating glutathione, enzyme activity, and the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Quercetin exerts powerful anti-inflammatory effects by acting on the Nod-like receptor protein 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome. In diabetes, quercetin has been shown to improve insulin sensitivity and reduce hi

Immunoregulatory role of quercetin in lung cancer.

Long-term nourishment with quercetin, a naturally occurring plant flavonoid abundant in citrus fruits, buckwheat, and onions, has been associated with reduced risks of chronic diseases, including cancer. In this study, we evaluated the therapeutic potential and the anti-cancer properties of quercetin in lung cancer using in vitro, in vivo, and ex vivo models. Quercetin induced tumor cell cycle arrest via the p53-p21 axis and suppressed tumor cell migration in both the A549 and H520 human lung cancer cell lines. Moreover, it reduced oxidative stress and downregulated the protein expression of o

Pharmacological and mechanistic aspects of quercetin in osteoporosis.

Osteoporosis (OP) is a bone disease associated with increasing age. Currently, the most common medications used to treat OP are anabolic agents, anti-resorptive agents, and medications with other mechanisms of action. However, many of these medications have unfavorable adverse effects or are not intended for long-term use, potentially exerting a severe negative impact on a patient's life and career and placing a heavy burden on families and society. There is an urgent need to find new drugs that can replace these and have fewer adverse effects. Quercetin (Que) is a common flavonol in nature. N

Research progress of quercetin in cardiovascular disease.

Quercetin is one of the most common flavonoids. More and more studies have found that quercetin has great potential utilization value in cardiovascular diseases (CVD), such as antioxidant, antiplatelet aggregation, antibacterial, cholesterol lowering, endothelial cell protection, etc. However, the medicinal value of quercetin is mostly limited to animal models and preclinical studies. Due to the complexity of the human body and functional structure compared to animals, more research is needed to explore whether quercetin has the same mechanism of action and pharmacological value as animal expe
