Effect of tannins from Quercus suber and Quercus coccifera leaves on ethanol-induced gastric lesions in mice.

The gastroprotective effects of 70% acetone extracts of Quercus suber and Quercus coccifera leaves and of tannins (pedunculagin, castalagin, phillyraeoidin A, and acutissimin B) purified from these extracts were examined in the mouse using the ethanol-induced gastric ulcer model. Both extracts (25, 50, and 100 mg/kg), given orally, prevented the formation of ethanol-induced lesions in the stomach. The percent protection varied between 68 and 91%. Purified tannins (50 mg/kg) were also effective in protecting the stomach against ethanol, and the percent protection varied from 66 to 83%. Castalag

Oak (Quercus rubor)poisoning in cattle.

Two outbreaks of oak poisoning in cattle in the Republic of South Africa are described. In the first outbreak 22 out of 80 head of cattle were severely affected while 40 out of a herd of 135 cattle were affected in the second outbreak. Of these 40, only one survived after 9 months despite vigorous treatment. Only young cattle under 2 years were affected during both outbreaks in spite of an average herd age of approximately 6 years in the second group of cattle. Clinical signs included severe weakness with a swaying gait, diarrhoea and dehydration. Some were pot bellied while others were emacia

Epigenomic Landscape of Oak (Quercus robur) across Season and Generation.

Seasonal fluctuations strongly shape the physiology of long-lived trees by coordinating growth, dormancy, and stress responses. Increasing evidence points to epigenetic mechanisms, particularly DNA methylation, as regulators of these processes, yet their role in long-lived trees across seasons, developmental stages and generations remains poorly understood. We generated single-base resolution maps of cytosine methylation exploring the epigenetic landscape of 180 year-old mature oak (Quercus robur) trees (genetically homogeneous) along spring, summer and autumn, and in their progeny. Genome-wid

The genome sequence of Quercus petraea Liebl., 1784 (Fagales: Fagaceae).

We present a genome assembly of Quercus petraea (sessile oak; Streptophyta; Magnoliopsida; Fagales; Fagaceae). The assembly consists of two haplotypes with total lengths of 823.57 megabases and 815.09 megabases. Most of haplotype 1 (99.41%) is scaffolded into 12 chromosomal pseudomolecules. Haplotype 2 was assembled to scaffold level. The mitochondrial sequence has a length of 349.29 kilobases and the plastid genome assembly has a length of 161.18 kilobases. Gene annotation of this assembly on Ensembl identified 32 253 protein-coding genes. This assembly was generated as part of the Darwin Tre

Transcriptome profiles of Quercus rubra responding to increased O3 stress.

BACKGROUND: Climate plays an essential role in forest health, and climate change may increase forest productivity losses due to abiotic and biotic stress. Increased temperature leads to the increased formation of ozone (O3). Ozone is formed by the interaction of sunlight, molecular oxygen and by the reactions of chemicals commonly found in industrial and automobile emissions such as nitrogen oxides and volatile organic compounds. Although it is well known that productivity of Northern red oak (Quercus rubra) (NRO), an ecologically and economically important species in the forests of eastern No

Somatic Embryogenesis of Quercus suber L. From Immature Zygotic Embryos.

Quercus suber L., cork oak, is a forest tree of high social and economic value. The cork is traditionally used in the wine industry to produce bottle stoppers, but it is also a very good material for both thermal and acoustic insulation in construction. Since its harvest does not harm the tree, the use of cork in the industry has a positive impact on the environment.Somatic embryogenesis is considered a feasible system for in vitro regeneration procedures, with many advantages in woody species. Classical genetic breeding programs have important limitations in forest trees, like cork oak, due t

Transcriptome analysis of bud burst in sessile oak (Quercus petraea).

Expression patterns of hundreds of transcripts in apical buds were monitored during bud flushing in sessile oak (Quercus petraea), in order to identify genes differentially expressed between the quiescent and active stage of bud development. Different transcriptomic techniques combining the construction of suppression subtractive hybridization (SSH) libraries and the monitoring of gene expression using macroarray and real-time reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) were performed to dissect bud burst, with a special emphasis on the onset of the process. We generated 801 expre

Probable toxicosis in cattle in Israel caused by the oak Quercus calliprinos.

A probable outbreak of oak (Quercus calliprinos) toxicosis in a herd of beef cattle--heifers and first-calving cows--grazing in the Judean foothills of Israel is described. Toxicosis probably occurred because of the consumption of oak leaves and buds during a period of pasture scarcity without any feed supplementation. A progressive syndrome of wasting, dullness, anorexia, polyuria, nephrosis, constipation and recumbency, culminating in death, was seen. A high mortality rate of 83% (38/46 animals) was noted. The clinical-pathological findings revealed increases in blood urea, creatinine, aspar

Phenological responses of Quercus serrata under the elevated CO2 and temperature.

This study experimentally investigates the effects of global warming on the phenology of Quercus serrata under elevated temperatures and CO2 conditions. The experiment was conducted for two years under five treatments: ambient temperature and CO2 (control), + 2 ℃ (T2) and + 4 ℃ (T4) with ambient CO2, and + 2 ℃ (CT2) and + 4℃ (CT4) warming combined with 1.8-fold elevated CO2. Seeds of Q. serrata were sown under each condition, and primary shoot emergence (PSE), first budbreak (FBB), growing-season budbreak (GSB), and leaf abscission (LA) were recorded as day of year (DOY). Warming advanced spri

[Effects of altitude on soil microbial community in Quercus liaotungensis forest].

Taking the Quercus liaotungensis forest soil in Dongling Mountain of Beijing as the object, and by using chloroform fumigation-extraction and phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA) analysis methods, this paper studied the variation characteristics of soil microbial community along an altitudinal gradient in the tree growth season. With increasing altitude, the soil microbial biomass carbon and nitrogen and the quantities of various soil microbial groups in the forest had definite differences but not significant. The ratio of soil bacteria to fungi increased, but the ratio of G(+)- to G- bacteria decre

Physiological response and molecular mechanism of Quercus variabilis under cadmium stress.

Heavy metal pollution is a global environmental problem, and Quercus variabilis has a stronger tolerance to Cd stress than do other species. We aimed to explore the physiological response and molecular mechanisms of Q. variabilis to Cd stress. In this study, the antioxidant enzyme activities of leaves were determined, while the photosynthetic parameters of leaves were measured using Handy PEA, and ion fluxes and DEGs in the roots were investigated using noninvasive microtest technology (NMT) and RNA sequencing techniques, respectively. Cd stress at different concentrations and for different du

Gallic acid as main product in the water extractives of Quercus frainetto ten.

The autoclave extraction of Hungarian oak (Quercus frainetto Ten.) wood gave 5.3% extractives. The chloroform soluble fraction obtained from the extracts of Q. frainetto allows to identify sesamin. The insoluble fraction contains mainly ribose and mannose. Water extraction in autoclave of thermo-treated Q. frainetto wood gave a lower amount of extractives (3.31%). The main product of the insoluble fraction was, on the basis of its mass spectrum, the monoacetyl derivative of gallic acid.
