Regression models for convex ROC curves.

The performance of a diagnostic test is summarized by its receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve. Under quite natural assumptions about the latent variable underlying the test, the ROC curve is convex. Empirical data on a test's performance often comes in the form of observed true positive and false positive relative frequencies under varying conditions. This paper describes a family of regression models for analyzing such data. The underlying ROC curves are specified by a quality parameter delta and a shape parameter mu and are guaranteed to be convex provided delta > 1. Both the posit

Receiver operator characteristic (ROC) curves.

Receiver operator characteristic curves describe the trade-off between appropriate diagnoses of true disease and inappropriate positive diagnoses in healthy persons. ROC curves may be used to compare the accuracy of two or more tests, diagnostic algorithms, or the performance of diagnosticians.

Survival model predictive accuracy and ROC curves.

The predictive accuracy of a survival model can be summarized using extensions of the proportion of variation explained by the model, or R2, commonly used for continuous response models, or using extensions of sensitivity and specificity, which are commonly used for binary response models. In this article we propose new time-dependent accuracy summaries based on time-specific versions of sensitivity and specificity calculated over risk sets. We connect the accuracy summaries to a previously proposed global concordance measure, which is a variant of Kendall's tau. In addition, we show how stand

Structural Neuroimaging Markers of Dementia: Insights from ROC Curve Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD) are growing public health concerns. Early and accurate differentiation between cognitively normal (NL), mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and dementia is essential for timely intervention. Structural MRI biomarkers-such as grey matter volume (GMV), white matter volume (WMV), white matter hyperintensity volume (WMH), AD signature (a meta-region of interest), and hippocampal occupancy score (HOC)-offer promise for objectively staging cognitive decline. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic utility of MRI-derived neuroi

Sample size calculation for comparing two ROC curves.

Biomarkers are key components of personalized medicine. In this paper, we consider biomarkers taking continuous values that are associated with disease status, called case and control. The performance of such a biomarker is evaluated by the area under the curve (AUC) of its receiver operating characteristic curve. Oftentimes, two biomarkers are collected from each subject to test if one has a larger AUC than the other. We propose a simple non-parametric statistical test for comparing the performance of two biomarkers. We also present a simple sample size calculation method for this test statis

A test for comparing conditional ROC curves with multidimensional covariates.

The comparison of Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curves is frequently used in the literature to compare the discriminatory capability of different classification procedures based on diagnostic variables. The performance of these variables can be sometimes influenced by the presence of other covariates, and thus they should be taken into account when making the comparison. A new non-parametric test is proposed here for testing the equality of two or more dependent ROC curves conditioned to the value of a multidimensional covariate. Projections are used for transforming the problem into

[ROC curves: general characteristics and their usefulness in clinical practice].

The use of diagnostic tests to determine the presence or absence of a disease is essential in clinical practice. The results of a diagnostic test may correspond to numerical estimates that require quantitative reference parameters to be transferred to a dichotomous interpretation as normal or abnormal and thus implement actions for the care of a condition or disease. For example, in the diagnosis of anemia it is necessary to define a cut-off point for the hemoglobin variable and create two categories that distinguish the presence or absence of anemia. The method used for this process is the pr

Estimating the Area Under ROC Curve When the Fitted Binormal Curves Demonstrate Improper Shape.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: The "binormal" model is the most frequently used tool for parametric receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis. The binormal ROC curves can have "improper" (non-concave) shapes that are unrealistic in many practical applications, and several tools (eg, PROPROC) have been developed to address this problem. However, due to the general robustness of binormal ROCs, the improperness of the fitted curves might carry little consequence for inferences about global summary indices, such as the area under the ROC curve (AUC). In this work, we investigate the effect of se

Estimation of multiple ordered ROC curves using placement values.

In many diagnostic accuracy studies, a priori orders may be available on multiple receiver operating characteristic curves. For example, being closer to delivery, fetal ultrasound measures in the third trimester should be no less accurate than those in the second trimester in predicting small-for-gestational-age births. Such an a priori order should be incorporated in estimating receiver operating characteristic curves and associated summary accuracy statistics, as it can potentially improve statistical efficiency of these estimates. Early work in the literature has mainly taken an indirect ap

When are summary ROC curves appropriate for diagnostic meta-analyses?

Diagnostic tests are increasingly evaluated with systematic reviews and this has lead to the recent developments of statistical methods to analyse such data. The most commonly used method is the summary receiver operating characteristic (SROC) curve, which can be fitted with a non-linear bivariate random-effects model. This paper focuses on the practical problems of interpreting and presenting data from such analyses. First, many meta-analyses may be underpowered to obtain reliable estimates of the SROC parameters. Second, the SROC model may be inappropriate. In these situations, a summary wit

Time-dependent ROC curve analysis in medical research: current methods and applications.

BACKGROUND: ROC (receiver operating characteristic) curve analysis is well established for assessing how well a marker is capable of discriminating between individuals who experience disease onset and individuals who do not. The classical (standard) approach of ROC curve analysis considers event (disease) status and marker value for an individual as fixed over time, however in practice, both the disease status and marker value change over time. Individuals who are disease-free earlier may develop the disease later due to longer study follow-up, and also their marker value may change from basel

Optimization of Area Under ROC Curve (AUC) via Ensemble Mini-Batch Approach.

Optimizing the area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve (AUC) has garnered increasing attention in modern signal processing and machine learning applications due to the recent proliferation of high-volume and highly skewed datasets. Existing scalable approaches utilize linear models with limited modeling ability, kernel methods with high computational cost, or neural network models, which may be inadequate for the problem at hand. In this correspondence, we extend the mini-batch AUC optimization (MBA) algorithm called MBA to nonlinear settings and propose a new approach nam

Comparing Estimation Methods for the Area Under the Bi-Weibull ROC Curve.

In this paper, we carried out extensive simulation studies to compare the performances of partial and maximum likelihood based methods for estimating the area under the bi-Weibull ROC curve. Further, real data sets from HIV/AIDS research were analyzed for illustrative purposes. Simulation results suggest that both methods perform well and yield similar results for Weibull data. However, for non-Weibull data, both methods perform poorly. The bi-Weibull model yields smooth estimates of ROC curves and a closed-form expression for the area under the ROC curve. Moreover, by adjusting its shape para

A bivariate contaminated binormal model for robust fitting of proper ROC curves to a pair of correlated, possibly degenerate, ROC datasets.

PURPOSE: The objective was to design and implement a bivariate extension to the contaminated binormal model (CBM) to fit paired receiver operating characteristic (ROC) datasets-possibly degenerate-with proper ROC curves. Paired datasets yield two correlated ratings per case. Degenerate datasets have no interior operating points and proper ROC curves do not inappropriately cross the chance diagonal. The existing method, developed more than three decades ago utilizes a bivariate extension to the binormal model, implemented in CORROC2 software, which yields improper ROC curves and cannot fit dege

Penalised Spline Estimation of Covariate-Specific Time-Dependent ROC Curves.

The identification of biomarkers with high predictive accuracy is a crucial task in medical research, as it can aid clinicians in making early decisions, thereby reducing morbidity and mortality in high-risk populations. Time-dependent receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves are the main tool used to assess the accuracy of prognostic biomarkers for outcomes that evolve over time. Recognising the need to account for patient heterogeneity when evaluating the accuracy of a prognostic biomarker, we introduce a novel penalised-spline-based estimator of the time-dependent ROC curve that accom

ROC Curve for Extremely Subtle Lung Nodules on Chest Radiographs Confirmed by CT Scan.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: The aim of the present study was to test the hypothesis that when a radiologist does not perceive an abnormality in images that contain either extremely subtle abnormalities or no abnormalities, the radiologist cannot distinguish these two types of images and the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve reflects that performance. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective study was conducted with approval of our institutional review board. Four general radiologists participated in an observer performance study of 100 chest images, each of which had a 5 × 5 cm reg

Semiparametric estimation of the covariate-specific ROC curve in presence of ignorable verification bias.

Covariate-specific receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves are often used to evaluate the classification accuracy of a medical diagnostic test or a biomarker, when the accuracy of the test is associated with certain covariates. In many large-scale screening tests, the gold standard is subject to missingness due to high cost or harmfulness to the patient. In this article, we propose a semiparametric estimation of the covariate-specific ROC curves with a partial missing gold standard. A location-scale model is constructed for the test result to model the covariates' effect, but the residu

Evaluation of screening methods for Down's syndrome using bootstrap comparison of ROC curves.

This paper concerns the prediction of fetal Down's syndrome in pregnant women. Down's syndrome is the most common congenital cause of severe mental retardation. We elaborate two predictive functions of trisomy 21, combining maternal age and a maternal serum marker. We evaluated them by means of receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves which give a representation of sensitivity and specificity of a prediction model when varying the cutoff of the predictor on the whole spectrum. Since normal statistical methods for comparison of ROC curves rely on distributional assumptions which were not

PSA and ROC curve: Validation and cutoff for forensic sexual assault cases through sequential testing.

Sex crime investigations often rely on evidence involving minimal amounts of seminal material, making it necessary to use sensitive biomarkers to detect semen. Thanks to its high concentration, prostate-specific antigen (PSA) has been extensively utilized as a forensic marker, but there remains a lack of consensus regarding its diagnostic cut-off value. The technique proposed in this study applies a tiered diagnostic algorithm that combines a highly sensitive screening assay with a highly specific assay. The objective was to validate PSA quantification as a screening tool and establish an opti
