Relations Between Adolescent Sensation Seeking and Risky Sexual Behaviors Across Sex, Race, and Age: A Meta-Analysis.

Sensation seeking (SS)-the seeking of novel and intense sensations or experiences and the willingness to take risks for the sake of such experiences-has been shown to be related to various risky sexual behaviors (RSBs) in areas such as multiple sexual partners, condom use, and sexual initiation. The aims of the current meta-analysis were to examine (1) how SS relates to specific RSBs in adolescents and (2) how the overall relationship between SS and RSB differs across sex, race, and age. Overall, a total of 40 studies met the inclusion criteria for our meta-analysis examining the relationship

Association of Race With Cancer-Related Financial Toxicity.

PURPOSE: We investigated the association between race and FT among previous patients with cancer. Studies show that patients with cancer experience financial toxicity (FT) because of their cancer treatment. METHODS: Data on individuals with a cancer history were collected in this cross-sectional study during 2012, 2014, and 2017, from the US Health Information National Trends Survey. This survey is conducted by mail with monetary compensation as an incentive. We specifically assessed responses to two questions: Has cancer hurt you financially? Have you been denied health insurance because of

Gender and race-related disparities in the management of ventricular arrhythmias.

Modern studies have revealed gender and race-related disparities in the management and outcomes of cardiac arrhythmias, but few studies have focused on outcomes for ventricular arrhythmias (VAs) such as ventricular tachycardia (VT) or ventricular fibrillation (VF). The aim of this article is to review relevant studies and identify outcome differences in the management of VA among Black and female patients. We found that female patients typically present younger for VA, are more likely to have recurrent VA after catheter ablation, are less likely to be prescribed antiarrhythmic medication, and

Race-related fatalities in U.S. jump racing, 2023-2025: incidence and documentation across public reporting sources.

BACKGROUND: Fatality reporting in National Steeplechase Association (NSA)-sanctioned U.S. jump racing is distributed across several public sources, and no single source consistently links the race incident with the final clinical outcome. AIMS/OBJECTIVES: To identify and verify race-related fatalities associated with NSA-sanctioned jump-racing starts, compare documentation across public sources, and estimate minimum confirmed fatality incidence. METHODS: The study population included official starters in completed NSA-sanctioned hurdle/fence and timber races during 2023-2025. Potential fatal

Association of race and ethnicity with the development of cystic fibrosis-related diabetes.

BACKGROUND: CF-related diabetes (CFRD) is a common, life-expectancy limiting complication of CF. While Black race and Hispanic ethnicity in youth-onset type 1 and type 2 diabetes are well-recognized risk factors for worse diabetes complications, the potential for racial/ethnic disparities in CFRD has received limited attention. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study utilizing the CF Foundation Patient Registry from 2010 to 2019 to determine the prevalence and incidence of CFRD by race/ethnicity. Three age cohorts were identified at baseline in 2010 (11-20y, 21-30y, and 31-40y). Lo

Sex and Race-Related DNA Methylation Changes in Hepatocellular Carcinoma.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the sixth most common cancer and fourth leading cause of cancer-related death worldwide. The number of HCC cases continues to rise despite advances in screening and therapeutic inventions. More importantly, HCC poses two major health disparity issues. First, HCC occurs more commonly in men than women. Second, with the global increase in non-alcoholic fatty liver diseases (NAFLD), it has also become evident that HCC is more prevalent in some races and/or ethnic groups compared to others, depending on its predisposing etiology. Most studies on HCC in the past ha

Injury related infant death: the impact of race and birth weight.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the effect of race and birth weight independent of other sociodemographic factors on injury related infant death using national data. SETTING: Infants born in the United States to mothers who were white (non-Hispanic), African American, Mexican American, and Native American. METHODS: Linked infant birth and death data from the National Center for Health Statistics for 1989-91 were analyzed to calculate unadjusted and adjusted odds ratios for death due to homicide or unintentional injury within the first year of life. In addition to maternal race and birth weight, the ri

The relation of age, race, and gender to the subsite location of colorectal carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: Characteristics that determine the anatomic site within the colorectum where carcinoma is most likely to occur would be useful in choosing optimal modalities for cancer screening and in the study of etiology. The aim of this study was to identify any association of gender, race, or age with colorectal carcinoma in the proximal or distal colorectum. METHODS: A descriptive, population-based epidemiologic study was conducted on colorectal carcinoma (CRC) cases identified through the Illinois Tumor Registry. Among CRC patients diagnosed between 1986 and 1991, age at diagnosis (40-90 y

Intestinal disaccharidase activities in relation to age, race, and mucosal damage.

Studies were undertaken to determine the relationship of intestinal disaccharidase activity to age and race, and the relationship of mucosal damage to a primary low lactase activity. The first study consisted of data on 399 persons (339 whites, 53 blacks, and 7 American Indians) ages 1 month to 93 years, with normal intestinal histology. Among whites, all 117 children 5 years old or under had high lactase levels, whereas low levels were found only in subjects over 5 years of age. No low lactase levels were identified among the 11 black children 3 years old or under, but in comparison to coetan

Race May Not Impact Endocrine Therapy-Related Changes in Breast Density.

BACKGROUND: Reduction in breast density may be a biomarker of endocrine therapy (ET) efficacy. Our objective was to assess the impact of race on ET-related changes in volumetric breast density (VBD). METHODS: This retrospective cohort study assessed longitudinal changes in VBD measures in women with estrogen receptor-positive invasive breast cancer treated with ET. VBD, the ratio of fibroglandular volume (FGV) to breast volume (BV), was measured using Volpara software. Changes in measurements were evaluated using a multivariable linear mixed effects model. RESULTS: Compared with white women

18F-Flortaucipir Binding in Choroid Plexus: Related to Race and Hippocampus Signal.

BACKGROUND: On target 18F-Flortaucipir (FTP) binding of Alzheimer's disease tau aggregates and off-target binding of melanocytes have been demonstrated with autoradiography. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to investigate the hypothesis that if binding in choroid plexus (CP) is due to melanocytes, the signal would be elevated in Black/African American (B/AA) compared to White (W) participants. In addition, we examined whether CP signal affects measurements in adjacent regions, and whether correcting for spill-in effects has an influence on associations between hippocampus (HC) FTP and amyloid or cognition

Is race/ethnicity related to the presence or severity of pain in colorectal and lung cancer?

CONTEXT: Developing interventions to address racial/ethnic cancer pain disparities requires exploration of the role of socioeconomic status, health status, and pain severity from the time of diagnosis. OBJECTIVES: To examine patterns of disparities in cancer pain by evaluating differences by race/ethnicity in the odds of reporting pain and in pain severity, controlling for key patient-level covariates. METHODS: This study used data from a nationally representative cohort of colorectal and lung cancer patients. Multivariable logistic regression was conducted to examine the relationship betwee

Alpha-fetoprotein concentrations in maternal serum: relation to race and body weight.

We confirmed the relation between maternal weight and serum alpha-fetoprotein concentration and have shown a further relation--to ethnic origin. Of these two, maternal weight is the more closely related. Oriental, white, and Hispanic women showed no significant differences in serum AFP concentrations when corrections for maternal weight were applied. Black women showed consistently higher values, by an average of 10% at each week of gestation. These corrections only affected values falling just above or below the 95th centile cutoff. We conclude that corrections for maternal weight and race sh

Age, race and ethnicity, and sex of participants in clinical trials related to obesity.

OBJECTIVE: Federal policies mandate the inclusion of historically marginalized groups in clinical trials and sociodemographic reporting on ClinicalTrials.gov. This study used ClinicalTrials.gov to comprehensively assess sociodemographic reporting and representation in obesity-related trials. METHODS: Age, race and ethnicity, and sex data were extracted for interventional studies completed in the United States with results from January 1, 2012, to October 13, 2023. We assessed the frequency of sociodemographic reporting and sample representation (equitable, over, or under), as determined by co
