Radial neuropathy is the third most common upper limb mononeuropathy after median and ulnar neuropathies. Muscle weakness, particularly wrist drop, is the main clinical feature of most cases of radial neuropathy, and an understanding of the radial nerve's anatomy generally makes localizing the lesion straightforward. Electrodiagnosis can help confirm a diagnosis of radial neuropathy and may help with more precise localization of the lesion. Nerve imaging with ultrasound or magnetic resonance neurography is increasingly used in diagnosis and is important in patients lacking a history of major a

Isolated neuropathy of the cutaneous branch of the radial nerve is a rarely recognised condition. Five cases were described in 1932 by Wartenberg, who suggested the name cheiralgia paraesthetica. The condition has also been described as Wartenberg's disease. Twelve cases of isolated neuropathy of the cutaneous branch of the radial nerve are described, the literature is reviewed and the clinical picture outlined. In six of the cases the condition subsided without treatment, in two there was a good response to local injection of hydrocortisone, and in four cases a satisfactory result followed re

A 23-year-old woman presented to her physician for left forearm pain of insidious onset, inability to extend the wrist, and numbness in the dorsal hand. An electromyogram (EMG) and nerve conduction study (NCS) demonstrated radial neuropathy, while magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the left elbow/forearm, performed 2 months later, revealed edema and atrophy of the wrist extensor muscles, but no compressive lesion. Following a lack of improvement and consultation with an orthopaedic surgeon, a second, more detailed EMG/NCS was performed, revealing a severe radial motor and sensory neuropathy,

A 42-year-old female suffered excruciating pain and paraesthesia on venepuncture of the cephalic vein in her left wrist. The left superficial radial nerve was injured. A flexed wrist during venepuncture renders the superficial radial nerve immobile and vulnerable to being punctured by the needle. To reduce the risk of nerve injury during venepuncture, the phlebotomist should choose a large and visible vein and insert the needle at a 5-15 degrees angle with the skin. The wrist should be selected only if the veins in the antecubital area are deemed unsuitable. The feeling of an electric shock al

The posterior interosseous nerve is the terminal motor branch of the radial nerve that innervates the extensor carpi ulnaris and the extensors of the thumb and fingers. We describe a case of a posterior interosseous neuropathy presenting with the typical 'finger drop' and partial 'wrist drop'. We focus on the clinical signs that distinguish it from a more proximal radial neuropathy, clarified by nerve conduction studies and needle electromyography. Multimodal imaging of the forearm did not identify a compressive lesion. Persistent symptoms prompted surgical exploration 5 years after initial on

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the spatial pattern of lesion dispersion in posterior interosseous neuropathy syndrome (PINS) by high-resolution magnetic resonance neurography.
METHODS: This prospective study was approved by the local ethics committee and written informed consent was obtained from all patients. In 19 patients with PINS and 20 healthy controls, a standardized magnetic resonance neurography protocol at 3-tesla was performed with coverage of the upper arm and elbow (T2-weighted fat-saturated: echo time/repetition time 52/7,020 milliseconds, in-plane resolution 0.27 × 0.27 mm2). Lesion

INTRODUCTION: Small published case series suggest that compressive radial neuropathy is often a self-limited phenomenon with a favorable prognosis. Due to paucity of data, we sought to clearly define prognosis.
METHODS: To define clinical and electrodiagnostic features in this condition, we retrospectively reviewed consecutive cases of compressive radial neuropathy confirmed using electrodiagnostic studies at a large tertiary center over a 10-year period.
RESULTS: A total of 51 patients (26 men, 25 women, mean age 46 years ± 15; range, 19-83 years) with compressive radial neuropathy were ide

Radial compression neuropathy developed in four patients with advanced Parkinson's disease. Electrodiagnostic studies in two patients documented the upper middle part of the arm as the site of nerve injury. The conditions of three patients improved over four months. One markedly disabled, bradykinetic patient had a permanent flexion deformity of the wrist and hand. Radial compression neuropathy may be an initiating factor in the development of hand deformities in patients with late-stage parkinsonism.

OBJECTIVE: We report a case of isolated triceps weakness resulting from radial neuropathy.
PATIENT: A middle-aged healthy man, a keen athlete, developed acute weakness of the triceps brachii muscle due to radial neuropathy. No other radial nerve innervated muscles were involved. Triceps function completely recovered in six weeks clinically and electrophysiologically suggesting focal conduction block secondary to demyelination.
DISCUSSION: Acute radial neuropathy after strenuous arm exercise resulting from a compression lesion with acute conduction block, has been previously described. Howeve

The radial nerve is a continuation of the posterior cord of the brachial plexus and one of the major nerves that provide motor and sensory innervations to the forearm. MR imaging evaluation of the radial nerve pathology has been described in scattered case reports. Current high-field MR scanners enable high resolution and high contrast imaging of the peripheral nerves. This article reviews the 3 Tesla magnetic resonance neurography imaging of radial nerve anatomy and various pathologies affecting it with relevant case examples.

BACKGROUND: We analyzed the clinical and electrophysiologic patterns of nerve injury in pediatric patients with radial neuropathy.
METHODS: This is a retrospective analysis of 19 children and adolescents with radial neuropathy.
RESULTS: The mean subject age was 12 years (range one month to 19 years), 56% were female, and 53% had traumatic etiologies. Weakness in the finger and wrist extensors was the prevailing complaint (82%). Predominant localization was at the posterior interosseous nerve (37%), followed by the radial nerve below the spiral groove (32%), the radial nerve at the spiral gro

The radial nerve is the major nerve serving the extensor compartment of the arm. This article describes the anatomic features, clinical features based on lesion location, electrodiagnostic assessment, prognosis, and treatment of radial neuropathies. Numerous traumatic causes have been reported to result in radial neuropathies, including compression or stretch injury, surgical insult, or trauma. Entrapment is a rare cause of radial neuropathy. Electrodiagnostic testing has been used to distinguish radial neuropathy from other disorders presenting with wrist or finger drops. In addition, its use

Symptoms of tunnel pathologies of the radial nerve in the ulnar region were analyzed in 39 patients (48 arms). Of importance in the tunnel neuropathy development is an overstrain of the short radial extensor of the wrist and the supinator which are in a close anatomical contact with the radial nerve branches. The affection of the radial nerve manifests in a sharp painfulness on the lateral surface of the ulnar region. The pains irradiate in the distal direction. Sensitivity disturbances within the autonomous zone innervated by the radial nerve were revealed in 17, and a moderate paresis of the

INTRODUCTION: Leiomyoma of peripheral nerve is a rare condition characterized by neuropathy of affected nerve. We herein report a rare presentation of leiomyoma of radial nerve which presented with wrist drop.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 37-year-old man visited our clinic with a history of sudden onset weakness of the wrist dorsiflexion/finger extension of the right side.
DIAGNOSIS: T2-weighted with fat saturation image of MRI demonstrated a well-defined, intra-neural, round mass of about 0.8 cm × 0.5 cm within the radial nerve. Excision of mass established the pathological diagnosis of intra-neural

It is important to have strong predictors of outcome in traumatic neuropathies so that appropriate management can be instituted early. Our objective in this study was to evaluate the prognostic value of electrodiagnostic studies in traumatic radial neuropathy. In this retrospective study, 33 of 67 subjects with traumatic radial neuropathy met the inclusion criteria. Good outcome was defined as grade 3 or higher strength on the Medical Research Council scale in wrist extensors. Compound muscle action potential (CMAP) responses from extensor indicis proprius (EIP) predicted prognosis: 92% of sub
