The molten salt waste from a pyroprocess to recover uranium and transuranic elements is one of the problematic radioactive wastes to be solidified into a durable wasteform for its final disposal. By using a novel method, named as the GRSS (gel-route stabilization/solidification) method, a molten salt waste was treated to produce a unique wasteform. A borosilicate glass as a chemical binder dissolves the silicate compounds in the gel products to produce one amorphous phase while most of the phosphates are encapsulated by the vitrified phase. Also, Cs in the gel product is preferentially situate

ABSTRACT A significant portion of the cost for D&D is related to low-level waste disposal, decontamination, and final radiological survey. For that reason, a careful cost-benefit analysis must be performed weighing the cost of decontaminating and radiologically surveying the building media for release against the cost of disposing of the material as radioactive waste. This cost-benefit analysis visibly came into play at the Rocky Flats Environmental Technology Site during the recent D&D of two facilities.

The 43 nuclear tests conducted at Enewetak Atoll by the United States between 1948 and 1958 produced close-in fallout that contaminated the islands and lagoon of the atoll with radioactive fission and activation products, and unfissioned nuclear fuel. In 1972, the U.S. government announced that it would conduct a cleanup and restoration operation to return the atoll to the Enewetak people. The radiological cleanup began in 1977 and lasted to 1980 and focused on reducing the concentration of the transuranium elements (238,239,240Pu and 241Am = TRU) in soils on some of the islands that might eve

This paper presents the results of microbial corrosion tests on M0-grade copper under conditions simulating a geological repository for radioactive waste at the Yeniseisky site (Krasnoyarsk Krai, Russia). The work used a microbial community sampled from a depth of 450 m and stimulated with glucose, hydrogen and sulfate under anaerobic conditions. It was shown that the maximum corrosion rate, reaching 9.8 µm/y, was achieved with the addition of sulfate (1 g/L) with the participation of microorganisms from the families Desulfomicrobiaceae, Desulfovibrionaceae and Desulfuromonadaceae. It was note

The presence of phosphorus in borosilicate glass (at 0.1 - 1.3 mol% P2O5) and in iron-phosphate glass (at 53 mol% P2O5) stimulated the growth and metabolic activity of anaerobic bacteria in model systems. Dissolution of these phosphorus containing glasses was either inhibited or accelerated by microbial metabolic activity, depending on the solution chemistry and the glass composition. The breakdown of organic carbon to volatile fatty acids increased glass dissolution. The interaction of microbially reduced Fe(II) with phosphorus-containing glass under anoxic conditions decreased dissolution ra

A method has been developed for removing chromium from alkaline high-level radioactive tank waste. Removing chromium from these wastes is critical in reducing the volume of waste requiring expensive immobilization and deep geologic disposition. The method developed is based on the oxidation of insoluble chromium(III) compounds to soluble chromate using ferrate. This method could be generally applicable to removing chromium from chromium-contaminated solids, when coupled with a subsequent reduction of the separated chromate back to chromium(III). The tests conducted with a simulated Hanford tan

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are often comingled with low-level radioactive wastes (LLRW), but little is known about subsurface VOC emanations from LLRW landfills. The current study systematically quantified VOCs associated with LLRW over an 11-yr period at the USGS Amargosa Desert Research Site (ADRS) in southwestern Nevada. Unsaturated-zone gas samples of VOCs were collected by adsorption on resin cartridges and analyzed by thermal desorption and GC/MS. Sixty of 87 VOC method analytes were detected in the 110-m-thick unsaturated zone surrounding a LLRW disposal facility. Chlorofluorocar

This paper reviews progresses on the use of alkali-activated cements for stabilization/solidification of hazardous and radioactive wastes. Alkali-activated cements consist of an alkaline activator and cementing components, such as blast furnace slag, coal fly ash, phosphorus slag, steel slag, metakaolin, etc., or a combination of two or more of them. Properly designed alkali-activated cements can exhibit both higher early and later strengths than conventional portland cement. The main hydration product of alkali-activated cements is calcium silicate hydrate (CSH) with low Ca/Si ratios or alumi

Radiation portal monitors are large-volume radiation detectors typically positioned along roadways, railways, and pedestrian portals. They are typically used for the detection of radioactive material where no such material is expected. Applications include monitoring vehicles and personnel exiting nuclear facilities, at the entrance to steel and scrap metal facilities, and at international borders. As part of the Port Hope Area Initiative, the Port Granby Project involves the relocation of approximately 450,000 m of historic low-level radioactive waste, located at an existing site on the shore

In the radioactive waste management, metal chloride wastes from a pyrochemical process is one of problematic wastes not directly applicable to a conventional solidification process. Different from a use of minerals or a specific phosphate glass for immobilizing radioactive waste salts, our research group applied an inorganic composite, SAP (SiO(2)-Al(2)O(3)-P(2)O(5)), to stabilize them by dechlorination. From this method, a unique wasteform composing of phosphate and silicate could be fabricated. This study described the characteristic of the wasteform on the morphology, chemical durability, a

BACKGROUND: Radionuclide therapy, such as with iodine-131 or lutetium-177-labeled substances, is used to treat thyroid cancer and neuroendocrine tumors. Due to the incorporated radioactivity, patients must remain hospitalized until radiation levels are deemed safe, according to national regulations. This is particularly problematic for patients who require hemodialysis (HD). While contamination of dialysis waste after radionuclide therapy is generally well recognized, a critical gap remains regarding its duration and extent. This poses risks for patient management and outpatient staff.

Thousands of waste sites around the world contain mixtures of toxic chlorinated solvents, hydrocarbon solvents, and radionuclides. Because of the inherent danger and expense of cleaning up such wastes by physicochemical methods, other methods are being pursued for cleanup of those sites. One alternative is to engineer radiation-resistant microbes that degrade or transform such wastes to less hazardous mixtures. We describe the construction and characterization of recombinant Deinococcus radiodurans, the most radiation-resistant organism known, expressing toluene dioxygenase (TDO). Cloning of t

This paper investigates the possibility of pressure-assisted thermomechanical consolidation and thermal treatment without applied pressure during the low-temperature consolidation of oil-saturated aluminosilicate sorbents for their subsequent application in the conditioning of liquid oil-containing radioactive waste (RAW). The Premium and Absorbent sorbents saturated with transformer oil not containing radionuclides were used as model RAW systems. It was established that pressure-assisted thermomechanical consolidation leads to the formation of a denser structure and a reduction in hydrocarbon

Removing phosphate from alkaline high-level waste sludges at the Department of Energy's Hanford Site in Washington State is necessary to increase the waste loading in the borosilicate glass waste form that will be used to immobilize the highly radioactive fraction of these wastes. We are developing a process which first leaches phosphate from the high-level waste solids with aqueous sodium hydroxide, and then isolates the phosphate by precipitation with calcium oxide. Tests with actual tank waste confirmed that this process is an effective method of phosphate removal from the sludge and offers

Water samples have been extracted from inside (from standpipes) and from outside (from boreholes) of the trenches at the low level radioactive waste disposal site at Drigg in Cumbria, UK. The samples were taken anaerobically from between 8.5 and 10.0 m below the surface using a submersible pump at low flow rates to ensure that the waters in the standpipes and boreholes were maintained at constant levels. To ensure representative samples, the Eh, pH. conductivity, temperature, iron and dissolved oxygen concentrations of the waters were taken during initial purging and during sampling. The gross

Immobilization of radioactive borate waste (RBW) using a geopolymer with a high Si/Al ratio has been challenging because boron-silicon networks lower the compressive strength and delay the setting time. In this study, metakaolin-based geopolymer waste form to immobilize simulant RBW was fabricated using different Si/Al ratios (1.0-1.4) and curing temperatures (26 and 60 ℃). The 7-day compressive strength results revealed that a certain amount of silicon and an elevated curing temperature are required to achieve high compressive strength and waste loading. Following waste acceptance criteria te

Transport containers for radioactive materials should withstand drop tests according to the regulations. In order to prevent a loss or dispersal of the internal radioactive materials in the drop tests, a tightening of the lid of the transport container should be maintained. The opening of the lid, due to the drop impact, might cause the dispersion of internal contents or a loss of shielding performance. Thus, it is crucial to predict damage to the fastening bolt and its fracture. In this study, the damage parameters of the fastening bolt were acquired, and its fracture was predicted using the

Carbon-14 is a key radionuclide in the safety assessment of deep geological repositories (DGR) for low- and intermediate-level radioactive waste (L/ILW). Irradiated metallic wastes generated during the decommissioning of nuclear power plants are an important source of 14C after their disposal in a DGR. The chemical form of 14C released from the irradiated metallic wastes determines the pathway of migration from the DGR into the environment. In a long-term corrosion experiment with irradiated steel simulating the hyper-alkaline, anoxic conditions of a cement-based DGR, total inorganic (TI14C2)
