New understandings of the biology of radiosurgery are considered. Differences from the radiobiology of fractionated radiotherapy are outlined. It is noted DNA damage alone is insufficient to account for the tissue changes which occur. Changes in blood vessels and immunological mechanisms are also involved. Tissue repair is more rapid than previously thought so that dose rate (the rate of delivery of radiation to the tissues) has been seen to be more important. The value of fractionation is examined. The effect of radiosurgery on normal brain (so called functional radiosurgery) is considered. T

The first bone marrow transplants (BMTs) in human patients were performed after conditioning with total body irradiation (TBI). TBI remains an important part of BMT protocols. The morbidity and mortality of BMT remains significant, but can be decreased by the introduction of optimized TBI regimens. This requires dosimetric control and a detailed analysis and description of the physics of the TBI procedure in every BMT center that utilizes TBI. Recommendations for such procedures are given. Radiobiological models are of help in developing less toxic TBI procedures, but can only be effective aft

A meeting on the contribution of epidemiological studies to the better understanding of the effects of radiation on human health was held in Washington, D.C., from 13 to 17 December 1965. This meeting was organized and sponsored by the World Health Organization, with the co-operation of the Division of Radiological Health, Public Health Service, United States Department of Health, Education, and Welfare. The main emphasis of the meeting was on obtaining representative views on the epidemiological studies now in progress and on the possibilities for further studies, but past work was also briefl

Stereotactic radiosurgery involves the use of precisely directed closed skull single-session radiation to create a desired radiobiologic response within the intracranial target with minimal effects to surrounding structures or tissues. It provided a way for physicians to administer high single doses of radiation to intracranial targets in patients with relative safety. Rapid advances in imaging and computer technologies in the last decade have resulted in development of a variety of different radiosurgery techniques and their wider applications. The Gamma Knife-, proton beam- and LINAC-based r

To effectively practice radiation protection, radiographers must understand the potential biologic effects of radiation. This article reviews the importance of a knowledge of radiobiology to the work of radiologic technologists. The author describes four specific biologic effects from radiation exposure--leukemia, thyroid cancer, breast cancer and fetal effects--and presents clinical examples that relate to current radiation protection practices and concerns.

This article reviews the evolving field of radiobiology, emphasizing the need for advanced multiscale, mechanistic models to optimize radiopharmaceutical therapies (RPTs). While the traditional linear-quadratic model underpins external beam radiation therapy, RPT's unique biological and spatial complexities demand new approaches. First-principles simulations of DNA damage, repair, and multicellular responses are crucial for understanding therapeutic efficacy and toxicity. The integration of these models into personalized, digital twin frameworks promises transformative clinical applications, b

Small high-activity radioactive particles of nominal diameter ranging from approximately 1 mm down to several microm have been a radiological concern over the last 30 years in and around European and American nuclear reactor facilities. These particles have often been referred to as 'hot particles'. The 'hot particle problem' came into prominent concern in the late 1960s. The potential carcinogenic effects in lungs as the result of irradiation by discrete small particles containing alpha-emitting radionuclides, particularly (239)Pu, were claimed by some to be several orders of magnitude greate

About a century ago, Conrad Röentgen discovered X-rays, and Henri Becquerel discovered a new phenomenon, which Marie and Pierre Curie later coined as radio-activity. Since their seminal work, we have learned much about the physical properties of radiation and its effects on living matter. Alas, the more we discover, the more we appreciate the complexity of the biological processes that are triggered by radiation exposure and eventually lead (or do not lead) to disease. Equipped with modern biological methods of high-throughput experimentation, imaging, and vastly increased computational prowes

PURPOSE: Radiation therapy is the treatment of choice for early glottic squamous cell cancer in many institutions over the world. Despite a relatively homogenous clinical model of T1 glottic tumors for the fractionation studies, the relationships between dose-time parameters remain unclear. To analyze the influence of fractionation parameters and hemoglobin level on tumor cure, this study has been performed.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a retrospective review of 235 patients with T1N0M0 glottic cancer treated by radiation therapy alone given in a conventional schedule with 5 fractions each

Radiobiological studies using heavy charged particles followed closely the development of accelerators to produce beams of ever-increasing energy, driven primarily by the aspirations of physicists and chemists interested in the structure of matter. An impressive share of this development took place at Berkeley, beginning with the invention of the cyclotron by Ernest Lawrence in 1930. There followed a series of cyclotrons, synchrotrons and linear accelerators, culminating in the BEVALAC, which provided the first source of very heavy ions (helium to argon) to be used clinically, beginning in 197

From simple viruses to complex multicellular animals, ionizing radiation can have deleterious effects on all organisms. For humans, exposure to radiation can come from a wide range of sources such as environmental contamination, occupational hazards, radiotherapy and space flight. In the next few decades, radiation toxicity will become an increasing healthcare concern as nuclear power usage, risk of nuclear war, space-based industry and cancer incidence are all projected to increase. While the biology of acute radiation sickness is relatively well understood, ionizing radiation can also cause

This manuscript is in four parts, presenting the four talks given in a symposium on normal tissue radiobiology. The first part addresses the general concept of the role of parenchymal cell radiosensitivity vs. other factors, highlighting research over the last decade that has altered our understanding of factors underlying normal tissue response. The other three parts expand on specific themes raised in the first part dealing in particular with (1) modifications of fibroblast response to irradiation in relation to the induction of tissue fibrosis, (2) the use of the linear-quadratic equation t

Cytokines function in many roles that are highly relevant to radiation research. This review focuses on how cytokines are structurally organized, how they are induced by radiation, and how they orchestrate mesenchymal, epithelial and immune cell interactions in irradiated tissues. Pro-inflammatory cytokines are the major components of immediate early gene programs and as such can be rapidly activated after tissue irradiation. They converge with the effects of ionizing radiation in that both generate free radicals including reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (ROS/RNS). "Self" molecules secret

Radiation therapy is a well-established approach for safely and non-invasively treating solid tumours and benign diseases with high precision and accuracy. Cardiac radiation therapy has recently emerged as a non-invasive treatment option for the management of refractory ventricular tachycardia. Here we summarise existing clinical and preclinical literature surrounding cardiac radiobiology and discuss how these studies may inform basic and translational research, as well as clinical treatment paradigms in the management of arrhythmias.

Neutron therapy was developed from neutron radiobiology experiments, and had identified a higher cell kill per unit dose and an accompanying reduction in oxygen dependency. But experts such as Hal Gray were sceptical about clinical applications, for good reasons. Gray knew that the increase in relative biological effectiveness (RBE) with dose fall-off could produce marked clinical limitations. After many years of research, this treatment did not produce the expected gains in tumour control relative to normal tissue toxicity, as predicted by Gray. More detailed reasons for this are discussed in

Mathematical models of chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) cell population dynamics are being developed to improve CML understanding and treatment. We review such models in light of relevant findings from radiobiology, emphasizing 3 points. First, the CML models almost all assert that the latency time, from CML initiation to diagnosis, is at most ∼10 years. Meanwhile, current radiobiologic estimates, based on Japanese atomic bomb survivor data, indicate a substantially higher maximum, suggesting longer-term relapses and extra resistance mutations. Second, different CML models assume different numbe

BACKGROUND: Meningioma are the second most common brain tumors in adults and can cause significant morbidity and mortality. The scarcity of in vitro and in vivo models represents the major obstacle to understand the molecular basis of meningioma tumorigenesis. The main aim of this study was to assess a method for radiobiology of meningioma cells colture by means of well-known meningioma lines.
NEW METHOD: We carried out a protocol of cells culture for irradiation of meningioma cells. We used the immortalized cell lines IOMM-Lee and CH-157 to study their radiation-reponse by means of clonogeni
