Hepatic radiofrequency ablation.

HYPOTHESIS: Hepatic radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is effective in treating patients with unresectable hepatic malignancies. DESIGN: Case series of 123 patients with unresectable hepatic tumors or tumors with histological findings not traditionally treated by means of hepatic resection were considered for hepatic RFA. Median follow-up was 20 months. SETTING: Tertiary referral center. PATIENTS: The 123 patents underwent 168 RFA sessions from January 1, 1998, through September 30, 2001. Sixty-nine patients were male and 54, female; average age was 65 years (range, 1-89 years). Fifty-two patien

Laparoscopic radiofrequency ablation versus percutaneous radiofrequency ablation for subphrenic hepatocellular carcinoma.

PURPOSE: Radiofrequency ablation is a curative treatment option for very early-stage or earlystage hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, percutaneous radiofrequency ablation (PRFA) for subphrenic tumors is technically challenging. Laparoscopic radiofrequency ablation (LRFA) has been used to overcome this disadvantage. This study compared the treatment outcomes between LRFA and PRFA for subphrenic HCC. METHODS: This retrospective study screened patients who underwent PRFA or LRFA for subphrenic HCC between 2013 and 2018. Therapeutic outcomes, including local tumor progression (LTP), intrahe

Radiofrequency ablation of lymphoma.

Percutaneous minimally invasive radiofrequency (RF) ablation has not been described for lymphoma. This image-guided modality is presented in 3 different settings for the treatment of refractory lymphoma. The first patient received RF ablation for the curative treatment of a solitary residual hepatic mass following rituximab-based chemotherapy for a posttransplantation lymphoproliferative disorder (PTLD) and is disease-free 4 years later. The second patient received RF ablation for successful palliation of progressive follicular lymphoma adjacent to the bladder wall following chemotherapy and m

Radiofrequency ablation in children.

Radiofrequency (RF) catheter ablation has ushered in a new era in the management of patients with symptomatic tachyarrhythmias. By providing the ability to cure the underlying arrhythmic substrate, RF catheter ablation obviates the need for life-long antiarrhythmic drugs. In the reported series, the success has been high and the complications have been infrequent and relatively minor. Not unexpectedly, RF catheter ablation has become the treatment of choice for patients with symptomatic paroxysmal tachyarrhythmias. The role of radiofrequency catheter ablation in infants and small children rema

Radiofrequency induced endometrial ablation.

Radiofrequency endometrial ablation is an experimental technique which requires a minimum of training and appears to be safe so long as a strict protocol is maintained. The success rate in over 1000 patients in multiple centes gives an incidence of amenorrhoea or oligomenorrhoea in excess of 80%. Therefore, as long as patients are strictly selected more than eight out of 10 hysterectomies for dysfunctional uterine bleeding can be avoided. The technique is particularly suitable for women with severe cardiopulmonary disease because there is no risk of pulmonary or cerebral oedema due to fluid in

Radiofrequency Ablation of Leiomyomas.

Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) of leiomyomas represents a significant advancement in the treatment of this common uterine condition. In the appropriately selected patient, both laparoscopic and transcervical options provide effective treatment for bleeding and bulk symptoms in a uterine-sparing manner. Compared with other minimally invasive leiomyoma treatment options, RFA procedures have comparable or favorable safety profiles, recovery timelines, and reintervention rates. Data on future fertility and pregnancy are limited, although early reports are promising.

Radiofrequency Ablation for Adenomyosis.

Adenomyosis is a common benign gynecologic condition characterized by ectopic endometrial glands and stroma in the myometrium causing pain (dysmenorrhea) and abnormal uterine bleeding. New interventional techniques have been introduced over recent years. This study evaluates the treatment success and side effects of radiofrequency ablation. An electronic literature search in the PubMed, Scopus, and ScienceDirect databases was carried out on the outcomes of pain reduction and, secondarily, on abnormal uterine bleeding, reintervention, reproductive outcome, imaging outcome, and complications. Transthoracic hepatic radiofrequency ablation.

BACKGROUND: Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is an alternative for the treatment of unresectable hepatic tumors. Tumors beneath the diaphragmatic dome may be difficult to access by laparoscopy. In these cases, a transthoracic transdiaphragmatic approach for delivering RFA can be used. METHODS: Three patients with hepatic metastatic disease were treated using a transthoracic transdiaphragmatic approach to deliver RFA therapy for tumors in liver segments 7 and 8. The patients underwent thoracoscopy. The tumors were identified using transdiaphragmatic ultrasound, and transthoracic transdiaphragmati

Thermoregulated radiofrequency endometrial ablation.

OBJECTIVE: To test the hypothesis that treating dysfunctional uterine bleeding by automated application of electrothermal energy to the uterine cavity, with precise regional control, might yield results equivalent to those reported for hysteroscopically directed laser and electrosurgical endometrial ablations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients with life style compromising menorrhagia, referred to six gynecologic surgical centers for hysterectomy or endometrial ablation, were admitted to the study if they had normal cervical cytology, a benign endometrial biopsy, no defined cause for their bleed

Comparison between radiofrequency ablation combined with mifepristone and radiofrequency ablation for large uterine fibroids.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the clinical outcomes of transvaginal ultrasound-guided (US-guided) radiofrequency ablation (RFA) combined with mifepristone for the treatment of large uterine fibroids. METHODS: Between June 2016 and December 2018, a total of 30 patients with symptomatic uterine fibroids (≥5cm) who underwent transvaginal US-guided RFA combined with mifepristone were included in this retrospective study. A matching cohort of 30 patients underwent transvaginal US-guided RFA without mifepristone as controls. The technical efficacy, complications and mid-term treatment effectiveness were a

Diaphragmatic Hernia after Radiofrequency Ablation.

Diaphragmatic hernia (DH) is a defect, which can be congenital or can develop later in life. Moreover, chromosomal and genetic abnormalities, environmental exposures, and nutritional deficiencies may be related to the development of congenital DH. In contrast, the risk factors of acquired DH include traumas, such as blunt injuries due to traffic accidents and surgical procedures. We report the case of a 71-year-old man admitted to our gastroenterology department for the treatment of esophageal varices. Four days after the endoscopic treatment, the patient vomited severely and reported severe r

Radiofrequency ablation of metastatic pheochromocytoma.

In the present report on the preliminary safety and effectiveness of radiofrequency (RF) ablation for pheochromocytoma metastases, seven metastases were treated in six patients (mean size, 3.4 cm; range, 2.2-6 cm). alpha- and beta-adrenergic and catecholamine synthesis inhibition and intraprocedural anesthesia monitoring were used. Safety was assessed by recording ablation-related complications. Complete ablation was defined as a lack of enhancement within the ablation zone on follow-up computed tomography. No serious adverse sequelae were observed. Complete ablation was achieved in six of sev

Radiofrequency ablation of adenoma sebaceum.

Adenoma sebaceum is one of the diagnostic features of tuberous sclerosis. Histologically, they are angiofibromas that occur over the central part of the face and hence, cause a major cosmetic disfigurement. Different forms of ablative treatments including laser ablation have been used for the treatment of this condition. Laser treatment is expensive and any form of treatment for adenoma sebaceum is not a one-time procedure but is a recurring process as the condition is genetic in aetiology. It is therefore appropriate to use a cheap and easily available modality, particularly in the Indian sce

Radiofrequency ablation of atrial fibrillation.

UNLABELLED: Twenty-five patients (16 males, mean age 46 years) underwent radiofrequency ablation because of either paroxysmal (13 patients) or persistent atrial fibrillation (12 patients). Ablation aimed at earliest activation of spontaneous and catheter-induced repetitive ectopy in left and right atria and appendages, and pulmonary veins. Catheter-induced repetitive ectopy was defined as acute onset of a burst of rapid atrial premature beats on touching the wall, sustained irritability while at the spot and acute termination of rapid activity upon release of the catheter. Post-ablation patien

[Radiofrequency ablation of atrial fibrillation].

The possibility of curing patients suffering from paroxysmal atrial fibrillation using a radiofrequency ablation treatment is a major change in the management of this arrhythmia. Pulmonary vein disconnection is efficient and safe after a learning curve of the operator. This pulmonary vein isolation is the first and mandatory step allowing disappearance of atrial fibrillation in 70% of the patients. Modification in fibrillatory substrate using linear lesions increases the rate success to 75% in chronic atrial fibrillation and to 82% in paroxysmal atrial fibrillation. The radiofrequency ablation

Radiofrequency Ablation for Atrial Fibrillation.

Catheter ablation has emerged as an excellent treatment option for atrial fibrillation. In appropriate patients, particularly those with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation in the absence of structural heart disease, catheter-based pulmonary vein isolation can eliminate or dramatically reduce the arrhythmia burden. However, with currently available tools, the procedure is complex and labor intensive. Simpler ablation procedures may emerge as newer ablation systems are developed.
