A paper radioimmunosorbent test (PRIST) was shown to be sensitive and reproducible when used with excretory/secretory antigen of Toxocara canis second stage larvae. Whatman No. 50 filter paper (5 mm discs) gave the most consistent and clear results with antigen at a concentration of 100 micrograms/ml, and could be stored for up to 3 weeks in vacuo at -70 degrees C. Radioimmunosorbent techniques using antisera to human immunoglobulin E (IgE) showed the presence of high levels (up to 15,840 U/ml) of IgE in serum and plasma from fowls immunised by repeated intraperitoneal injections of horse serum. These results were confirmed by passive cutaneous anaphylaxis and heat lability tests.

Total IgE serum levels were determined by the radioimmunosorbent method (RIST) in 18 patients with strongyloidiasis presenting mild or asymptomatic disease. Results showed elevated IgE serum levels in 7 out of 18 patients (38.8%), ranging from 150 to 3600 ng/ml with a mean concentration of 973 ng/ml.

The total IgE level was measured by radioimmunosorbent test (Phadebas RIST, Pharmacia) in blood samples of 454 dermatological patients and 26 blood donors aged 14-70 years. The results showed different IgE values in the same groups of diseases. Total immunoglobulin E (IgE) and specific IgE were assayed by a radioimmunosorbent test and a reverse enzyme immunoassay in patients with hookworm infections before and after treatment. A total of 77 subjects (30 patients with hookworm infections and 47 subjects as controls) were studied. Both specific and total IgE levels in serum and jejunal juice were raised in hookworm patients. The levels of immunoglobulin E (IgE) in aqueous humor (AH) and serum were determined in 74 uveitis patients and 13 control patients with senile cataract. Cerebral cysticercosis (CC) is a common cause of seizures and other central nervous system disorders in the Mexican-American population. The elevation of serum IgE in many parasitic diseases led us to study CSF and serum IgE in patients with CC diagnosed by pathologic, radiologic or clinical criteria. A paper disc radioimmunoassay, sensitive to 0.01 IU/ml, was used to measure CSF and serum IgE in 69 patients. The mean CSF IgE level in Mexicans with CC was 0.44 IU/ml compared to 0.28 IU/ml in Mexicans without CC and 0.07 IU/ml in non-Mexicans without CC.

Rush immunotherapy (RIT) with house dust extract was given to 15 patients with mild extrinsic or mixed asthma. A radioimmunoassay for the determination of thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3) in urine was developed. Total serum IgE levels were determined in 136 newborns and their mothers and in 54 of their fathers, using the paper radioimmunosorbent test (PRIST) technique. A total of 116 sera of patients suffering from South American mucocutaneous leishmaniasis were analysed using the RAST (L. braziliensis-specific) and RIST techniques. Results of total and specific IgE levels were correlated with different clinical stages of the disease. The level of total and specific IgE appeared to be higher among patients with cutaneous ulcers than among those presenting mucocutaneous lesions, i.e. espundia. Various methods of diagnosing allergic factors in chronic rhinitis are discussed. Different ways of collecting relatively large volumes of nasal secretion with as physiological a composition as possible were studied.
