Passive microwave radiometry (MWR) measures natural emissions in the range 1-10GHz from proteins, cells, organs and the whole human body. The intensity of intrinsic emission is determined by biochemical and biophysical processes. The nature of this process is still not very well known. Infrared thermography (IRT) can detect emission several microns deep (skin temperature), whereas MWR allows detection of thermal abnormalities down to several centimeters (internal or deep temperature). MWR is noninvasive and inexpensive. It requires neither fluorescent nor radioactive labels, nor ionizing or ot

OBJECTIVES: Increased in-depth joint temperature measured by the rapid, easy-to-perform microwave radiometry (MWR) method may reflect inflammation, even in the absence of clinical signs. We hypothesized that MWR is useful for RA and spondyloarthritis patients' assessment.
METHODS: Clinical examination, joint ultrasound and/or MRI and MWR were performed in two independent patient-control cohorts (n = 243).
RESULTS: Among single RA joints MWR performed best in the knee using ultrasound as reference, with 75% sensitivity-73% specificity for grey-scale synovitis score ⩾2, and 80% sensitivity-82%

OBJECTIVE: Microwave Radiometry is a non-invasive method which determines within seconds the in vivo temperature of internal tissues at a depth of 3-7 cm with an accuracy of ±0.2°C. In this proof-of-concept study, we tested the hypothesis that, in absence of relevant clinical signs, increased local temperature detected by microwave radiometry reflects subclinical synovial inflammation, using ultrasound as reference method.
METHODS: Knees of healthy controls, subjects with recent knee trauma and symptom-free patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) or osteoarthritis were examined by placing the

Applying infrared thermometry for temperature measurement is recommended for Charcot neuro-osteoarthropathy (CNO) diagnosis and monitoring of its course. Microwave radiometry (MWR) is used for the detection of temperature changes in human tissues. This study evaluates the agreement between these two methods in CNO assessment. Individuals with diabetes mellitus (DM) with and without active CNO were included. MWR measurements were performed by a microwave computer-based system that detects microwave radiation from the area under investigation and temperatures of the internal tissues. Sensors wit

The ability of microwave radiometry (MWR) to detect with high accuracy in-depth temperature changes in human tissues is under investigation in various medical fields. The need for non-invasive, easily accessible imaging biomarkers for the diagnosis and monitoring of inflammatory arthritis provides the background for this application in order to detect the local temperature increase due to the inflammatory process by placing the appropriate MWR sensor on the skin over the joint. Indeed, a number of studies reviewed herein have reported interesting results, suggesting that MWR is useful for the

While tattooable nanotechnology for in-skin sensing and communication has been a popular concept in science fiction since the 1990s, the first tattooable intradermal nanosensors have only emerged in the past few years, and none have been demonstrated in human skin. We developed a photochromic tattoo that serves as an intradermal ultraviolet (UV) radiometer that provides naked-eye feedback about UV exposure in real time. These small tattoos, or "solar freckles", comprise dermally implanted colorimetric UV sensors in the form of nanoencapsulated leuco dyes that become more blue in color with inc

Video imaging spectro-radiometry (VISR) has been proposed as a means to quantify the combustion efficiency (CE) of flares. This work presents a numerical assessment of VISR using computational fluid dynamics simulations of a steam-assisted industrial flare, with a focus on three aspects: how approximations in the spectroscopic model impact the local "pixel-wise" CE, the validity of the approach for computing flare global CE using inferred local CE values, and the ability and limitations of VISR instrument to capture fuel that may be aerodynamically stripped from the combustion zone under cross

We studied the possibility of using artificial intelligence (AI) passive microwave radiometry (MWR) for the diagnostics of venous diseases. MWR measures non-invasive microwave emission (internal temperature) from human body 4 cm deep. The method has been used for early diagnostics in cancer, back pain, brain, COVID-19 pneumonia, and other diseases. In this paper, an AI model based on MWR data is proposed. The model was used to predict the disease state of phlebology patients. We have used MWR and infrared (skin temperature) data of the lower extremities to design a feature space and construct

A retrospective study of 731 patients with carcinoma of the cervix in various stages showed that recurrences were most common in patients treated with combined local radium application and irradiation of the parametrium. The basis for radiation treatment planning had been radiometry after the radium application. A comparison of the position of the uterus as shown by this method with computer tomography carried out in 40 patients in the position used for irradiation showed that in more than half these patients there was a significant difference in the results. It therefore appears that it is ne

A method of total body radiometry was used to study iodine metabolism in 47 patients with lepromatous leprosy. Disorders were found in 1/3 of the cases. The level of organic iodine in the body was the most informative of all iodine metabolism indices. In the active stage of leprosy it was twice as low, on an average, as the normal one, in the stage of incomplete and stable regression it rose not reaching, however, the values of healthy persons. The lowest mean value of an organic iodine level in the body was observed in patients with noticeable specific polyneuritis. The content of iodine in t

The possibility of non-invasive determination of the depth of the location and temperature of a cancer tumor in the human body by multi-frequency three-dimensional (3D) radiothermography is considered. The models describing the receiving of the human body's own radiothermal field processes are presented. The analysis of the possibility of calculating the desired parameters based on the results of measuring antenna temperatures simultaneously in two different frequency ranges is performed. Methods of displaying on the monitor screen the three-dimensional temperature distribution of the subcutan

The authors present the principal concepts necessary for the use of the method of radiometry of the whole body in studying the iodine metabolism in vivo in the intact and thyroidectomized rats and also in experimental hyperthyroidism resulting from TTH or thyroidin administration. The iodine metabolism indices in euthyroidism and athyroidism in rats proved to be adequate to the corresponding curves of the iodine metabolism indices in healthy persons and those suffering from myxedema. Experimental hyperthyroidism in rats, similarly to hyperthyroidism in man, was characterized by an increase in

Background/Objectives: Biological ageing is accompanied by progressive alterations in mitochondrial metabolism, microvascular function, and thermoregulation. These processes collectively influence tissue heat production and dissipation, reflecting integrated metabolic, vascular, and thermoregulatory activity measurable at the physiological level. Passive microwave radiometry (MWR) provides a non-invasive, radiation-free method for detecting deep-tissue bioenergy emissions, complementing surface infrared thermography. To evaluate a thermophysiological Bioenergetic Index (BEI), derived from deep

A study was conducted to determine the age dependence of the temperature of the low back in the region of the five lumbar vertebrae by using passive microwave radiometry (MWR). The rationale for the study is that the infrared brightness on which the temperature measurement is based will be dependent upon blood circulation and thus on metabolic, vascular, and other regulatory factors. The brightness and infrared temperatures were determined in five zones above each of the medial, left, and right lateral projections of the vertebrae. A total of 115 healthy subjects were recruited, aged between 1

CT scans are proposed for the measurement of tibial, femoral and humeral torsion. The value of computerised tomography in the evaluation of slipped capital epiphysis is yet not discussed. Conventional roentgenographic studies have shown that the capital femoral epiphysis slips by rotating backwards. In a study of 5 cases with a right site slip of the capital femoral epiphysis of different extent a comparison of conventional radiography with CT-scan was undertaken. True lateral films of both hips were obtained at the same time when CT scan of the femoral head and the condylar region of the femu

We present a circular complementary split ring resonator (CCSRR) flexible antenna operating in the 1.4 GHz radio-astronomy quiet frequency band. The antenna is designed for microwave non-invasive brain temperature sensing of an infant's head to aid in the therapeutic hypothermia treatment of hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) and traumatic brain injury (TBI). The proposed metamaterial-inspired antenna is designed on a flexible Kapton substrate with a biocompatible Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) protective superstrate layer. For brain temperature measurement, the flexible antenna is placed dire

Human molars were subjected to demineralization in acid gel followed by incubation in remineralization solutions without or with fluoride (1 or 1000 ppm). Photothermal radiometry (PTR) and modulated luminescence (LUM) frequency scans were performed prior to and during de/remineralization treatments. Transverse Micro-Radiography (TMR) analysis followed at treatment conclusion to determine mineral loss and lesion depth. The remineralization process illustrated a complex interplay between surface and subsurface mineral deposition, confining the thermal-wave centroid toward the dominating layer. E
