Treatment of the wrong body part due to incorrect setup is among the leading types of errors in radiotherapy. The purpose of this paper is to report an efficient automatic patient safety system (PSS) to prevent gross setup errors. The system consists of a pair of charge-coupled device (CCD) cameras mounted in treatment room, a single infrared reflective marker (IRRM) affixed on patient or immobilization device, and a set of in-house developed software. Patients are CT scanned with a CT BB placed over their surface close to intended treatment site. Coordinates of the CT BB relative to treatment

BACKGROUND: Styrofoam is a patient-specific immobilization device in radiotherapy; most previous studies about the impact of styrofoam on setup errors have only analyzed a single tumor type, and have not considered the influence of patient's physical condition on the setup errors of styrofoam.
PURPOSE: This study aims to evaluate the impact of styrofoam device on setup errors in radiotherapy and explore which patient population is more suitable for styrofoam immobilization.
METHODS: Univariate and multivariate analyses were conducted to compare the setup errors between the experimental group

AIM: The aim of this study is to evaluate differences in terms of the setup errors observed using kV planar image compared to CBCT for oesophageal cancer patients.
BACKGROUND: Planar kV images are quick to acquire but only allow the observation of bony structures. CBCT allows the evaluation of soft tissues, which includes the oesophagus (and tumour) and OAR, giving a more accurate verification of the positioning.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: All patients were imaged with both techniques between January 2012 and March 2014 were included in the study (16 patients, 212 kV images and 116 CBCT images).

BACKGROUND: Carbon-ion rotating gantries use is limited by its large size, weight, and high cost. Gantry-free modality enables the reduction of the overall size, weight, and cost. Among them, upright treatment, which utilizes fixed ion beamlines, in combination with a treatment chair capable of 360° rotation and adjustable pitch angle (enabling non-coplanar beam delivery), provides a wider range of beam entry angles compared to conventional couch-based setups and has already been applied in particle radiotherapy for head and neck cancer patients.
PURPOSE: In this study, we analyzed clinical d

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the dosimetric effects of roll-rotational setup errors of stereotactic ablative radiotherapy (SABR) for lung cancer using volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT).
METHODS: A total of 23 lung SABR cases were evaluated retrospectively. Each of the planning CT images was intentionally rotated by ±1°, ±2° and ±3°. After that, to simulate the translational couch correction, rotated CT images were moved along the x, y and z axis to match the centroid of the target volume in the rotated CT images with that in the original CT images. The differences in D95% and V100% of the tar

Objective.Traditional radiotherapy dosimetric analyses are often limited by cone-beam CT artifacts and correlated longitudinal data mismanagement. This study uses artifact-free fan-beam CT (FBCT) and a generalized linear mixed Lasso (glmmLasso) model to decouple interfraction setup errors and anatomical deformations within a simulated image-guided radiotherapy workflow, providing quantitative support for future site-specific ART research.Approach.We retrospectively analyzed 84 patients (head and neck [H&N], thorax, pelvis; n = 28 each). Weekly diagnostic-quality FBCTs served as ground truth. T

We evaluated the tumor residual volumes considering six degrees-of-freedom (6DoF) patient setup errors in stereotactic radiotherapy (SRT) with multicomponent mathematical model using single-isocenter irradiation for brain metastases. Simulated spherical gross tumor volumes (GTVs) with 1.0 (GTV 1), 2.0 (GTV 2), and 3.0 (GTV 3)-cm diameters were used. The distance between the GTV center and isocenter (d) was set at 0-10 cm. The GTV was simultaneously translated within 0-1.0 mm (T) and rotated within 0°-1.0° (R) in the three axis directions using affine transformation. We optimized the tumor grow

BACKGROUND: Postoperative radiotherapy is standard for high-risk cervical cancer, but acute toxicities-particularly gastrointestinal and hematologic-remain clinically relevant. Patient positioning may influence organ dose exposure and setup accuracy, yet its multidimensional clinical impact is poorly characterized.
METHODS: This retrospective cohort study evaluated patients with cervical cancer treated with postoperative volumetric modulated arc therapy between 2019 and 2022. Propensity score matching (2:1) produced a balanced matched cohort of prone and supine treatments for comparative anal
