Ralstonia pickettii in environmental biotechnology: potential and applications.

Xenobiotic pollutants such as toluene and trichloroethylene are released into the environment by various industrial processes. Ralstonia pickettii possess significant biotechnological potential in the field of bioremediation and has demonstrated the ability to breakdown many of these toxic substances. Here, we provide a description of the major compounds that various strains of R. pickettii are capable of degrading and a brief review of their breakdown pathways and an argument for its use in bioremediation.

Ralstonia pickettii bacteraemia in a cord blood transplant recipient.

A seven-year old boy with acute lymphoblastic leukemia underwent an HLA mismatched cord blood transplant. He developed grade 2 mucositis requiring morphine infusion and grade 3-4 hyperacute graft-versus-host disease affecting the skin, gastrointestinal tract, and liver requiring pulse methylprednisolone. On days 21, 23, and 24 post-transplant, blood culture obtained through the central line and periphery were positive for Ralstonia pickettii. The same strain (with the same biochemical profile and antibiotic susceptibility pattern) was also recovered from surveillance throat swab cultures from

Streptococcus australis and Ralstonia pickettii as Major Microbiota in Mesotheliomas.

The microbiota has been reported to be correlated with carcinogenesis and cancer progression. However, its involvement in the pathology of mesothelioma remains unknown. In this study, we aimed to identify mesothelioma-specific microbiota using resected or biopsied mesothelioma samples. Eight mesothelioma tissue samples were analyzed via polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification and 16S rRNA gene sequencing. The operational taxonomic units (OTUs) of the effective tags were analyzed in order to determine the taxon composition of each sample. For the three patients who underwent extra pleural

Persistent bacteremia caused by Ralstonia pickettii and Microbacterium: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Ralstonia pickettii is a low virulent, gram-negative bacillus that is rarely associated with human infections and may cause bacteremia. Microbacterium species are gram-positive coryneforms that are generally considered as a contaminant in Gram staining of blood cultures, especially when the time to positivity is longer than 48 h. Both these bacterial species are emerging opportunistic pathogens that may occasionally cause serious infections and even life-threatening health conditions. CASE PRESENTATION: Here, we report the case of a patient with bacteremia caused by both R. picket

Ralstonia pickettii bacteremia in a cardiac surgery patient in Belgrade, Serbia.

Ralstonia pickettii is an opportunistic bacterium found in the water environment with an increasing incidence as a nosocomial pathogen. The objectives of this study were to describe R. pickettii bacteremia in a cardiac surgery patient and to evaluate its ability to grow in a saline solution and to form biofilm. The patient in this study underwent mitral and aortic valve replacement surgery with two aortocoronary bypasses. She developed signs of respiratory and renal failure, therefore hemodialysis was started. After 25 days in an intensive care unit, the patient had recurrent episodes of fever

A rare culprit: Ralstonia pickettii in a deep neck space infection.

Ralstonia pickettii is a rare, emerging opportunistic pathogen that has been previously limited to nosocomial infections, often associated with contaminated sterile solutions. Here, we present the case of a neck abscess caused by R. pickettii, the first documented case of a deep neck space infection caused by this bacterium. The patient in this case had no risk factors for R. pickettii infection. By highlighting the atypical presentation and microbiology in this case, we aim to highlight the emergence of a wide spectrum of disease caused by R. pickettii.

Ralstonia pickettii Bacteremia: An Emerging Infection in a Tertiary Care Hospital Setting.

Ralstonia species are Gram-negative bacilli that have increasingly been recognized as emerging nosocomial pathogens, particularly in immunocompromised hosts. Ralstonia pickettii is the most clinically important pathogen from the Ralstonia genus. Nosocomial outbreaks of Ralstonia pickettii infections brought about by the use of contaminated medical solutions, including saline, sterile water, as well as disinfectants, have been reported. There have been case reports of invasive infections with variable presentations. Here, we describe three cases of Ralstonia pickettii bacteremia during a period

Characterization of the adaptive response to trichloroethylene-mediated stresses in Ralstonia pickettii PKO1.

In Ralstonia pickettii PKO1, a denitrifying toluene oxidizer that carries a toluene-3-monooxygenase (T3MO) pathway, the biodegradation of toluene and trichloroethylene (TCE) by the organism is induced by TCE at high concentrations. In this study, the effect of TCE preexposure was studied in the context of bacterial protective response to TCE-mediated toxicity in this organism. The results of TCE degradation experiments showed that cells induced by TCE at 110 mg/liter were more tolerant to TCE-mediated stress than were those induced by TCE at lower concentrations, indicating an ability of PKO1

Ralstonia pickettii: Two Cases of Bacteremia in a Moroccan Pediatric Intensive Care Unit.

Ralstonia pickettii is an emerging opportunistic pathogen in hospital settings, particularly affecting immunocompromised patients. Its ability to persist in aqueous solutions and colonize medical devices contributes to nosocomial outbreaks, complicating infection prevention and management strategies. We report two cases of R. pickettii bloodstream infections in the pediatric intensive care unit of a Moroccan university hospital. The first case involved an 11-month-old infant admitted with febrile respiratory distress. Despite initial treatment with imipenem and amikacin, R. pickettii bacteremi

Oxacillinases and antimicrobial susceptibility of Ralstonia pickettii from pharmaceutical water systems in Croatia.

This study evaluated antibiotic susceptibility and presence of blaOXA22 and blaOXA60 genes in 81 isolates of Ralstonia pickettii obtained from different purified and ultra-pure water systems in two different geographical areas of Croatia. E-test and disc diffusion test were performed to determine antibiotic susceptibility. Polymerase chain reaction was applied to detect genes encoding OXA-22 and OXA-60 oxacillinases previously identified in R. pickettii. The isolates were genotyped by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis. The results revealed variable susceptibility/resistance profiles. Our isolat

An Outbreak of Ralstonia pickettii Bloodstream Infection Associated with an Intrinsically Contaminated Normal Saline Solution.

OBJECTIVE Ralstonia pickettii has caused contamination of pharmaceutical solutions in many countries, resulting in healthcare infections or outbreak events. We determined the source of the outbreak of R. pickettii bloodstream infection (BSI). METHODS This study was conducted in a 3,000-bed tertiary referral medical center in Taiwan with >8,500 admissions during May 2015. Patients had been treated in the injection room or chemotherapy room at outpatient departments, emergency department, or hospital wards. All patients who were culture positive for R. pickettii from May 3 to June 11, 2015, were

Outbreak of nonfermentative Gram-negative bacteria (Ralstonia pickettii and Stenotrophomonas maltophilia) in a hemodialysis center.

We report a case series of seven patients with nonfermentative Gram-negative bacteria infections in a single dialysis center; four patients with Ralstonia pickettii and three patients with Stenotrophomonas maltophilia. Two of the seven patients were admitted to hospital for intravenous antibiotic treatment, while the rest were treated with oral antibiotics at home. Both the admitted patients had temporary vascular catheter infections from the aforementioned pathogens. We conclude that the outbreak is due to colonization of treated reverse osmosis water, presumably through contamination via pol

Association between gentamicin resistance and stress tolerance in water isolates of Ralstonia pickettii and R. mannitolilytica.

Members of the species Ralstonia pickettii and R. mannitolilytica, although ubiquitous and lacking major virulence factors, have been associated with nosocomial outbreaks. Tolerance to metals, antibiotics, and disinfectants may represent an advantage for their ubiquity and opportunistic pathogenic potential. In this study, we compared five strains that differed on the origin (hospital effluent, tap water, mineral water) and in the susceptibility to aminoglycosides, regarding their tolerance to metals and disinfection. The growth kinetics and biofilm formation capacity were tested in four R. pi

Sonication contribution to identifying prosthetic joint infection with Ralstonia pickettii: a case report and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: In the context of an increase number of primary and revision total hip and total knee arthroplasty performed yearly, an increased risk of complication is expected. Prosthetic joint infection (PJI) remains the most common and feared arthroplasty complication. Ralstonia pickettii is a Gram-negative bacterium, that has also been identified in biofilms. It remains an extremely rare cause of PJI. There is no report of an identification of R. pickettii on an extracted spacer loaded with antibiotic. CASE PRESENTATION: We present the case of an 83-years-old Caucasian male patient, that un

Outbreak of Ralstonia pickettii bacteraemia related to sterile distilled water in patients with haematological and oncological malignancies.

This study aimed to investigate a four-month Ralstonia pickettii outbreak by characterizing clinical and environmental isolates while also demonstrating the infection control measures taken to identify and eliminate the sources. R. pickettii was isolated from patients' blood cultures, and an epidemiological investigation was initiated to determine the source of the outbreak. Clonal relatedness among clinical and environmental samples was assessed using pulsed-field gel electrophoresis. In total, R. pickettii was isolated from 14 patient blood cultures and 3 bottles of sterile distilled water.
