Nystatin studies of the skin of larval Rana catesbeiana.

Transport and electrical characteristics of the isolated skin of larval Rana catesbeiana were analyzed using ion substitution and nystatin. When the inner (IBS) and outer (OBS) bathing solutions contained Na Ringer solution the electrical potential (TEP), short-circuit current (SCC), and resistance (R2) were 23.5 +/- 7.0 mV, 2.8 +/- 0.7 microA . cm-2, and 8.00 +/- 0.74 k omega. cm2, respectively (n = 4). When K was substituted for Na in the OBS these values were not changed significantly. When nystatin (120 U.cm-3), a drug that increases the permeability of membranes to small cations, was adde

Olfactory bulb projections in the bullfrog Rana catesbeiana.

The projections of the accessory and main olfactory bulbs of the bullfrog are described as part of a long term analysis of the morphological differences in amphibian and reptilian telancephalons. Unilateral aspiration of the accessory olfactory bulb results in an ipsilateral projection to the pars lateralis of the amygdala via the accessory olfactory tract. Degenerating fibers from the accessory olfactory bulb are tracable into the cell-free zone between the dorsal striatum and the lateral pallium, and projections to these neural populations may also exist. Unilateral lesions of the main olfac

Development of tectal connectivity across metamorphosis in the bullfrog (Rana catesbeiana).

In the bullfrog (Rana catesbeiana), the process of metamorphosis culminates in the appearance of new visual and visuomotor behaviors reflective of the emergence of binocular vision and visually-guided prey capture behaviors as the animal transitions to life on land. Using several different neuroanatomical tracers, we examined the substrates that may underlie these behavioral changes by tracing the afferent and efferent connectivity of the midbrain optic tectum across metamorphic development. Intratectal, tectotoral, tectotegmental, tectobulbar, and tecto-thalamic tracts exhibit similar traject

Autonomic regulation of cutaneous vascular resistance in the bullfrog Rana catesbeiana.

To gain a better understanding of the regulation of cutaneous blood flow in the bullfrog, the vascular innervation, vasoactivity and adrenoceptor types of the cutaneous vasculature were investigated using a pump-perfused skin preparation. Stimulation of cranial nerve I, the vagal ganglion, sympathetic ganglion 1 and sometimes sympathetic ganglion 2 caused cutaneous vascular resistance (CVR) to increase. Stimulation of cranial nerve IX and spinal nerves 1 and 2 had no effect on CVR. The response to stimulation of sympathetic ganglion 1 was antagonized by phentolamine but not by atropine. Phento

Distribution and innervation of putative arterial chemoreceptors in the bullfrog (Rana catesbeiana).

Peripheral arterial chemoreceptors have been located previously in the carotid labyrinth, the aortic arch, and the pulmocutaneous artery of frogs. In the present study we used cholera toxin B neuronal tract tracing and immunohistochemical markers for cholinergic cells (vesicular acetylcholine transporter [VAChT]), tyrosine hydroxylase (TH), and serotonin (5HT) to identify putative O2-sensing cells in Rana catesbeiana. We found potential O2-sensing cells in all three vascular areas innervated by branches of the vagus nerve, whereas only cells in the carotid labyrinth were innervated by the glos

Neural organization of the ventilatory activity in the frog, Rana catesbeiana. I.

In order to elucidate the neural basis for lung ventilation in the frog, we have investigated the efferent neural activity to oropharyngeal muscles in the decerebrate, paralyzed, unanesthetized bullfrog, Rana catesbeiana. Efferent motor output was recorded from the mandibular branch of the trigeminal (Vmd), the laryngeal branch of the vagus (Xl), and the main and sternohyoid branches of the hypoglossal nerve (Hm and Hsh, respectively). Two types of rhythmic bursting outputs were observed: (1) a high-frequency, low-amplitude, reciprocal oscillation between Vmd, a buccal levator nerve, and Hsh,

Neural organization of the ventilatory activity in the frog, Rana catesbeiana. II.

The paralyzed, decerebrate frog, Rana catesbeiana, displays "fictive" oropharyngeal and pulmonary ventilations. In order to evaluate the neuronal correlates of these two centrally programmed ventilatory bursting patterns, we have performed intra- and extracellular recordings of bulbar respiratory neurons in this fictively breathing preparation. A total of 123 respiratory neurons were recorded from the caudal medulla. Of 51 antidromically activated neurons, 20 were vagal motoneurons and 31 were hypoglossal motoneurons. Respiratory neurons that depolarized during the lung (L) or non-lung (N) ven

Afferent and efferent components of the facial nerve in the bullfrog (Rana catesbeiana).

The afferent and efferent components of the facial nerve were traced within the brain stem of Rana catesbeiana, using three different neuroanatomical techniques. Primary afferent fibers could be traced to the spinal tract of trigeminal nerve and to fasciculus solitarius as far caudally as the first or second spinal segment, using silver degeneration methods. Cobalt filling of of the entire nerve showed the same distribution of afferent fibers, as well as the filling of the cells within the mesencephalic nucleus of trigeminal, indicating the origin of a proprioceptive component of the facial ne

Viable amphibian hybrids produced by circumventing a block to cross-fertilization(Rana clamitans female x Rana catesbeiana male).

Eggs of Rana clamitans in their own jelly coat are not fertilized by sperm of other species. When the eggs were surrounded by jelly from another species, they were fertilized by R. catesbeiana and R. septentrionalis sperm. The hybrid nature of the resulting embryos was confirmed by detection of paternal enzyme forms. The R. clamitans female times R. septentrionalis male embryos arrested by the tailbud stage. The R. clamitans female times R. catesbeiana male embryos developed into viable tadpoles and subsequently metamorphosed. The hybridization results coupled with the similarity of enzyme pat

Distribution of immunoreactive neuropeptides in the pancreas of the bullfrog, Rana catesbeiana, demonstrated by immunofluorescence.

Indirect double immunofluorescence labelling for eight neuropeptides in the pancreas of the bullfrog, Rana catesbeiana, demonstrated the occurrence, distribution, and coexistence of certain neuropeptides in the exocrine and endocrine pancreas. Immunoreactivity of substance P (SP), calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP), vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP), neuropeptide Y (NPY), FMRFamide (FMRF), and galanin (GAL) was localized in nerve fibers distributed between the acini and around the duct system and vasculature of the exocrine pancreas. Respiratory pattern formation in the isolated bullfrog (Rana catesbeiana) brainstem-spinal cord.

This study characterizes various patterns of motor output obtained from cranial nerves V, VII, X, and XII of in vitro, saline-perfused, brainstem-spinal cord preparations of the American bullfrog (Rana catesbeiana). Motor output indicative of fictive breathing was present in all preparations. In 17 of 26 preparations, fictive breaths were either evenly spaced or randomly distributed, while in the remaining nine preparations fictive breaths occurred in episodes separated by relatively long periods of quiescence. With the exception of fictive breath duration in the non-episodic preparations and

Optical and tomographic imaging of a middle ear malformation in the bullfrog (Rana catesbeiana).

Using a combination of in vivo computerized tomography and histological staining, a middle ear anomaly in two wild-caught American bullfrogs (Rana catesbeiana) is characterized. In these animals, the tympanic membrane, extrastapes, and pars media (shaft) of the stapes are absent on one side of the head, with the other side exhibiting normal morphology. The pars interna (footplate) of the stapes and the operculum are present in their normal positions at the entrance of the otic capsule on both the affected and unaffected sides. The pattern of deformity suggests a partial failure of development

Natural occurrences and characterization of Elizabethkingia miricola infection in cultured bullfrogs (Rana catesbeiana).

INTRODUCTION: The bacterium Elizabethkingia miricola is a multispecies pathogen associated with meningitis-like disease that has been isolated from several amphibian species, including the bullfrog, but this is the first isolation in Guangxi. In the present study, the dominant bacteria were isolated from the brains of five bullfrogs with meningitis-like disease on a South China farm in Guangxi. METHODS: The NFEM01 isolate was identified by Gram staining; morphological observations; 16S rRNA, rpoB, and mutT-based phylogenetic tree analysis; and physiochemical characterization and was subjected

Arginine vasotocin is the major adrenocorticotropic hormone-releasing factor in the bullfrog Rana catesbeiana.

In a previous study, we showed that corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) is the major thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH)-releasing factor in the bullfrog (Rana catesbeiana) hypothalamus. Our findings prompted us to ascertain whether CRF or arginine vasotocin (AVT), a known adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) secretagogue in several vertebrates, is the main stimulator of the release of ACTH from the bullfrog pituitary. Both the frog CRF and AVT stimulated the release of immunoassayable ACTH from dispersed anterior pituitary cells in vitro in a concentration-dependent manner. AVT, however, exhibit

The osteochondral ligament: a fibrous attachment between bone and articular cartilage in Rana catesbeiana.

The anuran epiphyseal cartilage shows a lateral expansion that covers the external surface of the bone, besides other features that distinguish it from the corresponding avian and mammalian structures. The fibrous structure that attaches the lateral cartilage to the bone was characterized in this work. It was designated osteochondral ligament (OCL) and presented two main areas. There was an inner area that was closer to the periosteal bone and contained a layer of osteoblasts and elongated cells aligned to and interspersed with thin collagen fibers. The thin processes of the cells in this area

Soft-tissue mineralization of bullfrog larvae (Rana catesbeiana) at a wastewater treatment facility.

Bullfrog tadpoles (Rana catesbeiana) from a wastewater treatment facility were identified with severe lesions consisting of large, up to 1-cm in diameter, mineralized nodules protruding from the tail or gular region. Sectioning of formalin-fixed specimens revealed more extensive mineralization involving the vertebrae or muscles of the head and tail. Nodules examined microscopically were not associated with parasitic or infectious agents. Large nodules consisted of mineralized aggregates surrounded by a margin of granulomatous inflammation. Individual connective-tissue fibers and muscle cells w

Emerging pathogen of wild amphibians in frogs (Rana catesbeiana) farmed for international trade.

Chytridiomycosis is an emerging disease responsible for a series of global declines and extinctions of amphibians. We report the causative agent, Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis, in North American bullfrogs (Rana catesbeiana) farmed for the international restaurant trade. Our findings suggest that international trade may play a key role in the global dissemination of this and other emerging infectious diseases in wildlife.

Hormonal profiles correlated with season, cold, and starvation in Rana catesbeiana (bullfrog) tadpoles.

Bullfrog (Rana catesbeiana) tadpoles are of value to amphibian researchers because of their large size, and year-round availability due to overwintering in many latitudes. Concern over a possible difference in hormonal parameters in tadpoles obtained at different times of the year prompted us to investigate thyroid gland secretion in vitro, plasma and ocular melatonin, and plasma corticosteroids in late pre- to early prometamorphic larvae on 12L:12D. Winter tadpoles exposed to 22 degrees C for 3 weeks of acclimation (winter group) were compared to summer tadpoles kept at 22 degrees C (summer g

Evaluation of the effects of titanium dioxide nanoparticles on cultured Rana catesbeiana tailfin tissue.

Nanoparticles (NPs), materials that have one dimension less than 100 nm, are used in manufacturing, health, and food products, and consumer products including cosmetics, clothing, and household appliances. Their utility to industry is derived from their high surface-area-to-volume ratios and physico-chemical properties distinct from their bulk counterparts, but the near-certainty that NPs will be released into the environment raises the possibility that they could present health risks to humans and wildlife. The thyroid hormones (THs), thyroxine, and 3,3',5-triiodothyronine (T3), are involved
