Growth of the pectoral girdle of the Leopard frog, Rana pipiens (Anura: Ranidae).

This article describes the growth of the anuran pectoral girdle of Rana pipiens and compares skeletal development of the shoulder to that of long bones. The pectoral girdle chondrifies as two halves, each adjacent to a developing humerus. In each, the scapula and coracoid form as single foci of condensed chondrocytes that fuse, creating a cartilaginous glenoid bridge articulating with the humerus. Based on histological sections, both the dermal clavicle and cleithrum begin to ossify at approximately the same time as the periosteum forms around the endochondral bones. The dermal and endochondra

Morphology of the caudal spinal cord in Rana (Ranidae) and Xenopus (Pipidae) tadpoles.

Using a variety of neuroanatomical and histological techniques, we compare the spinal cord and peripheral nerve distribution in the tails of larvae from Xenopus laevis and three species of Rana. The relatively large, postsacral spinal cord of Xenopus contains abundant motoneurons and their axons. Spinal nerves exit from the spinal cord in a regular array, one nerve per myotome, from the cervical region to near the end of the tail. Somata of motoneurons innervating caudal myotomes are found along the entire length of the tail. In contrast, the caudal cord of Rana is reduced to a filum terminale

Histopathologic and genotoxic effects of deltamethrin on marsh frog, Pelophylax ridibundus (Anura: Ranidae).

It is known that amphibians inhabiting agricultural areas are constantly exposed to chemicals such as insecticides. Deltamethrin, a type II pyrethroid insecticide, is widely used in the world. The present study aimed to investigate the toxic effects of different concentrations (0.625, 1.25, and 2.50 mg/kg body wt) of orally applied deltamethrin to marsh frog (Pelophylax ridibundus) after 96 h of treatment. The histopathological abnormalities in liver, gastrointestinal tract, and kidney tissues were evaluated with quantitative analyses. In liver, increase of melanomacrophagic aggregates, non-ho

A new species of glossiphoniid leech from Rana pretiosa (Amphibia: Ranidae) in Oregon.

A new species of ectoparasitic glossiphoniid leech was found feeding on frogs in the Nature Center Pond and elsewhere in Deschutes County, Oregon. The new species of Placobdella resembles the southern alligator leech, Placobdella multilineata Moore, 1953, notwithstanding their vast geographic separation in North America. The new species is readily distinguished by possessing subdivided annuli, by its papillation and pigmentation patterns as well as by the arrangement of ovarian tissues. There is strong evidence of nocturnality and of the potential for parasitizing humans.

A new species of Amolops Cope, 1865 (Anura, Ranidae) from central Guangdong, China.

In this study, a new species of the genus Amolops (Anura, Ranidae), Amolops guangzhouensissp. nov., is described based on six type specimens collected from Conghua District, Guangzhou City, and adjacent Longmen County, Huizhou City, in Guangdong Province, China. The molecular phylogenetic analysis, based on two mitochondrial DNA fragments (16S and COI), places the new species as an independent evolutionary lineage within the A. daiyunensis group. The morphometric statistical analysis and morphological comparison also distinguish the new species from all other congeners. This species can be dif

Amolops cuongi (Amphibia, Anura, Ranidae), a new species from the Hoang Lien Range, Vietnam.

A new species of the genus Amolops is described from the Hoang Lien Range, northwestern Vietnam as Amolops cuongi sp. nov. While morphological and molecular data assign these individuals to the Amolops mantzorum group, the new species is distinguishable from its congeners on the basis of a combination of the following diagnostic characters: size small (SVL 33.9-36.9 mm in males; 37.9-44.4 mm in females); head longer than wide; vomerine teeth absent or weakly developed; snout short (SE/SVL 0.15-0.17 in males; 0.14-0.16 in females); tympanum small (TD/ED 0.26-0.37 in males; 0.25-0.35 in females)

A new species of Amolops monticola group (Amphibia: Ranidae) from Hoang Lien Range, northwest Vietnam.

Of the 19 species of Amolops reported from Vietnam, 10 are known to occur in the Hoang Lien Range in northwest Vietnam. During field surveys in the Hoang Lien Range, we collected individuals from a population of Amolops that we could not assign to any known species; morphological and molecular data assign these individuals to the Amolops monticola group and we describe a new species to science, Amolops spicalinea sp. nov, in reference to a line of horny spinules running along the body below the dorsolateral fold in males. The new species is morphologically and molecularly most similar to Amolo

A new species of Odorrana (Anura, Ranidae) from the limestone karst forest of northern Vietnam.

Talc pleurodesis is highly effective for preventing recurrence of pneumothorax and pleural effusion, but it can be complicated by dissemination, acute lung injury, lead exposure, and foreign body-induced chronic inflammation and pain. Our objective is to develop a safe, biodegradable, contaminant-free particle for pleurodesis. We used mouse models of pneumothorax and malignant pleural effusion to compare the efficacy and safety of pleurodesis with talc and hydroxyapatite microspheres (HAM). Intrapleural instillation of microspheres induced pleural adhesions, fibrosis, and symphysis as effectiv

Metamorphic changes in the vagal innervation to the alimentary tract in the green frog, Rana clamitans (Ranidae).

The alimentary tract of typical anurans shortens extensively at metamorphosis, when the microphagous tadpole transforms into a macrophagous frog. We used methylene blue vital stain and Sihler stain, in conjunction with microdissection, to map the distribution of the gastric branch of the vagus nerve in green frogs (Rana clamitans) before and after metamorphosis. After metamorphosis, terminal divisions of the gastric branch can be observed on the tunica musculosa extending as far as the pylorus. In the tadpole, the gastric branch ends abruptly on the esophagus. The premetamorphic pattern of inn

Single and combined chronic toxicity of cadmium and titanium dioxide nanoparticles in Aquarana catesbeiana (Anura: Ranidae) tadpoles.

The rising production and improper disposal of titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs) into aquatic systems present considerable environmental challenges, especially when these particles interact with other contaminants such as cadmium (Cd). Thus, the current study aimed to evaluate the potential toxic effects on the gills, chondrocranium, body growth, and mortality of Aquarana catesbeiana tadpoles. The tadpoles were exposed to environmentally relevant concentrations of TiO2 NPs (10 µg L-1), and CdCl2 (10 µg L-1), both individually and in combination, for 30 days (chronic exposure), along wi

Elevational size variation and two new species of torrent frogs from Peninsular Malaysia (Anura: Ranidae: Amolops Cope).

Previously, only one species of torrent frog (Amolops larutensis) was thought to occur throughout Peninsular Malaysia. However, genomic work has demonstrated that populations from eastern Peninsular Malaysia form two separate lineages that are genetically distinct from A. larutensis that is now restricted to the western half of Peninsular Malaysia. This study demonstrates that all three lineages can be morphologically distinguished from each other, thereby providing additional support for the recognition of the eastern lineages as two distinct species. These lineages are described herein as Am

An immunohistochemical study on the neuropeptide-producing endocrine cells in the alimentary tract of wrinkled frog, Rana rugosa (Ranidae).

The regional distribution and relative frequency of neurohormonal peptides-producing endocrine cells were demonstrated in the alimentary tract of wrinkled frog, Rana rugosa, using eight types of specific antisera raised against mammalian regulatory peptides. The alimentary tract of frog was divided into six portions from esophagus to rectum. Most of the cells in the epithelial lining portion, between epithelial cells, were generally spherical or spindle shaped having long cytoplasmic process that was reached to the lumen (open-typed cell) while cells showing round shape (close-typed cell) were

A comprehensive molecular phylogeny of the genus Sylvirana (Anura: Ranidae) highlights unrecognized diversity, revised classification and historical biogeography.

The genus Sylvirana includes 12 species widely distributed in South China and Southeast Asia. The phylogenetic relationships and species diversity for Sylvirana and allied genera remain unresolved and controversial due to insufficient data and incomplete taxon sampling. Using a combined dataset of mitochondrial genes (16S and COI) and 101 nuclear genes obtained through the amplicon sequence capture approach, we generated the most comprehensive phylogenetic analysis for the genus Sylvirana to date, inferring diversity, phylogenetic relationships, and historical biogeography with unprecedented l

Opposite effects of cooling on twitch contractions of skeletal muscle isolated from tropical toads (Leptodactylidae) and northern frogs (Ranidae).

Cooling increases the twitch force of frog skeletal muscle (Rana temporaria; Rana pipiens), but decreases the twitch force of tropical toad muscle (Leptodactylus insularis). Action potentials and intramembranous charge movement in frog and toad fibers were slowed identically by cooling. Cooling increased the integral of twitch Ca2+ detected by aequorin in frog fibers (1.4-fold), while also decreasing the peak and slowing the rate of decay. Conversely, cooling decreased the integral (0.6-fold) and the peak of twitch Ca2+ in toad fibers, without affecting the rate of decay. The difference in ent
