Role of polyethylene glycol to alleviate lead stress in Raphanus sativus.

The continuous contamination of heavy metals (HMs) in our ecosystem due to industrialization, urbanization and other anthropogenic activities has become a serious environmental constraint to successful crop production. Lead (Pb) toxicity causes ionic, oxidative and osmotic injuries which induce various morphological, physiological, metabolic and molecular abnormalities in plants. Polyethylene glycol (PEG) is widely used to elucidate drought stress induction and alleviation mechanisms in treated plants. Some recent studies have unveiled the potential of PEG in regulating plant growth and develo

Minimization of heavy metal toxicity in radish (Raphanus sativus) by strigolactone and biochar.

Due to the high solubility of Cd in water, it is considered a potential toxin which can cause cancer in humans. In plants, it is associated with the development of oxidative stress due to the generation of reactive oxygen species. To overcome this issue, the roles of different plant hormones are vital. Strigolactones, one of such natural plant hormones, show promise in alleviating cadmium toxicity by mitigating its harmful effects. Acidified biochar (AB) can also effectively mitigate cadmium toxicity via ion adsorption and pH buffering. However, the combined effects of strigolactone and AB sti

The RsFLC1 and RsSAM1 gene regulates the bolting time in Radish (Raphanus sativus L.).

Early flowering and bolting of radish can affect the normal development of the underground part's fleshy root, thereby affecting their commercial value. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying flowering time regulation in radish remain largely unexplored. In this study, an F2 population derived from the cross between the early bolting variety YZH and the late bolting variety XHT. The qBT7.2 locus was fine-mapped to a 171 kb region on chromosome 7 and RsFLC1 was identified as a candidate gene. Overexpression of RsFLC1 significantly delayed flowering time in Arabidopsis. Silencing of RsFLC1

Genome-wide identification and characterization of CONSTANS-like gene family in radish (Raphanus sativus).

Floral induction that initiates bolting and flowering is crucial for reproductive fitness in radishes. CONSTANS-like (CO-like, COL) genes play an important role in the circadian clock, which ensures regular development through complicated time-keeping mechanisms. However, the specific biological and functional roles of each COL transcription factor gene in the radish remain unknown. In this study, we performed a genome-wide identification of COL genes in the radish genome of three cultivars including 'Aokubi', 'kazusa' and 'WK10039', and we analyzed their exon-intron structure, gene phylogeny

Genome-Wide Identification and Expression Profiling of the DOG1-like Genes in Radish (Raphanus sativus L.).

Seed dormancy is a vital adaptive mechanism regulated by the DELAY OF GERMINATION (DOG) gene family. Here, we present the first systematic genome-wide identification and expression profiling of the DOG gene family (RsDOGs) in radish (Raphanus sativus). Comprehensive analysis of physicochemical properties, chromosomal distribution, and phylogeny revealed strong evolutionary conservation alongside functional divergence. Notably, several RsDOG proteins harbor natural fusions of the DOG1 domain with a bZIP domain, suggesting potential transcription factor activity and novel regulatory functions. P

Co-exposure to titanium dioxide nanoparticles does not affect cadmium toxicity in radish seeds (Raphanus sativus).

Recent developments on environmental fate models indicate that as nano waste, engineered nanomaterials (ENMs) could reach terrestrial ecosystems thus potentially affecting environmental and human health. Plants can be therefore exposed to ENMs but controversial data in terms of fate and toxicity are currently available. Furthermore, there is a current lack of information on complex interactions/transformations to which ENMs undergo in the natural environment as for instance interacting with existing toxic compounds. The aim of the present study was to assess the behavior and biological effects

Evaluation of antioxidant and morphophysiological alterations in polyethylene glycol primed Raphanus sativus L. under sodium fluoride stress.

Among the abiotic stresses that adversely affect plants, sodium fluoride (NaF) interferes with physicochemical parameters, reducing growth, yield, and biomass accumulation in various plants, particularly radish (Raphanus sativus L.). Sodium fluoride negatively interacts with several pathways related to photosynthesis, protein synthesis, and antioxidant activity. This study was designed to discover the potential of polyethylene glycol (PEG) seed priming in alleviating NaF stress in R. sativus. During this study, seeds of R. sativus were divided into two groups: primed seeds and nonprimed seeds.
