Reaction Time in Fibromyalgia Patients.

BACKGROUND: Fibromyalgia has unknown aetiology and is associated with reduced information processing speed and therefore prolonged reaction time. However, the processes underlying this are unknown. OBJECTIVES: First, to compare the reaction time in a cohort of fibromyalgia patients and a matched group of normal controls. Second, to assess whether detailed symptoms of pain and autonomic function, as well as measures of tinnitus, fatigue, daytime sleepiness and Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection are predictors of reaction time in fibromyalgia. METHODS: The between-groups mean serial five-choice r

Reaction times and dyslexia.

Five groups of children, including two groups of dyslexics (aged 15 and 11 years), were tested on simple reaction, selective choice reaction, and lexical decision tasks. In simple reactions to a pure tone, the dyslexic children responded as quickly as their chronological age controls and significantly faster than their reading age controls. In selective choice reactions to pure tones, the dyslexic children were significantly impaired compared with their chronological age controls and no faster than their reading age controls. This speed impairment obtained even though a selective choice reacti

Quantification of reaction time and time perception during Space Shuttle operations.

A microprocessor-based test battery containing simple reaction time, choice reaction time, and time perception tasks was flown aboard a 1985 Space Shuttle flight. Data were obtained from four crewmembers. Individual subject means indicate a correlation between change in reaction time during the flight and the presence of space motion sickness symptoms. The time perception task results indicate that the shortest duration task time (2 s) is progressively overestimated as the mission proceeds and is statistically significant (p less than 0.01) when comparing preflight and postflight baselines. Normobaric hypoxia overnight impairs cognitive reaction time.

BACKGROUND: Impaired reaction time in patients suffering from hypoxia during sleep, caused by sleep breathing disorders, is a well-described phenomenon. High altitude sleep is known to induce periodic breathing with central apneas and oxygen desaturations, even in perfectly healthy subjects. However, deficits in reaction time in mountaineers or workers after just some nights of hypoxia exposure are not sufficiently explored. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the impact of sleep in a normobaric hypoxic environment on reaction time divided by its cognitive and motoric components. Eleven healthy

Prolonged peroneal reaction time in ankle instability.

The peroneal reflex time to sudden ankle inversion and the postural control of 15 athletes with functionally instable ankles were compared with 15 stable controls. A trapdoor produced sudden ankle inversion. Surface electrodes recorded electromyographic activity of the peroneal muscles. Postural sway was expressed by a transverse sway value obtained during single limb stance on a force plate. Increased postural sway was found in subjects with functional instability (p less than 0.01). This is in accordance with previous studies. Functionally instable subjects also displayed an increased perone

Quadriceps muscle reaction time in obese children.

This study aimed to determine the influence of obesity, according to body mass index (BMI) and fat mass percentage, on quadriceps muscle reaction times. The study utilized a cross-sectional design. The sample size consisted of 42 schoolchildren (54.5% girls) aged 11 to 12 years old. Participant measurements included weight and height, which were used to categorize individuals based on BMI. Additionally, the electrical bioimpedance technique was employed to categorize participants based on their body fat percentage. A sudden destabilization test of the lower limb was performed to assess the rea

Cathodal tDCS increases stop-signal reaction time.

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a noninvasive method of modulating human brain activity and potentially alters performance in cognitive tasks. Often it is assumed that effects of tDCS modulation depend on the polarity-anodal stimulation typically boost cognitive processes whereas cathodal stimulation hampers them. While most tDCS research focusses on the effects of anodal stimulation, cathodal tDCS effects are underexplored. In the present study, cathodal tDCS over the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (rDLPFC) was used to potentially hamper the response inhibition process

Choice reaction time in workers using trichloroethylene.

Eight-choice reaction time studies were carried out on women using trichloroethylene (TCE) as an industrial solvent, and simultaneous tests were performed on control subjects. The women exposed to TCE showed an increase in choice reaction time compared with the control subjects. This divergent trend was substantial at a factory where TCE levels exceeded the recommended threshold limit value (TLV). The divergence was less pronounced, but still clearly evident at another factory where TLV was not exceeded.

[Reaction time and Békésy audiometry (author's transl)].

Electrophysiological work has elaborated that subjects having positive recruitment exhibit shorter response latencies than non-recruiting subjects do. Correspondingly we have investigated in this paper, if subjectively measured reaction times also decrease in case of recruiting subjects. Our measurements have shown that the averaged reaction time (at 4 kHz) of recruiting subjects is significantly (p = 0.05) shorter than the value of a non-recruiting group. Because of the interindividual scattering of the results, however, measuring of reaction time ist not suitable to distinguish subjects with

On-Body Measure of Reaction Time Provides Real-time Triage of Impairment.

There is an urgent need for accurate, cost-effective tools to aid the timely triage of cognitive impairment in field--forward settings. Neurocognitive assessments are used to evaluate individuals after suspected head trauma, and reaction time in particular is a measure identified as a sensitive, robust metric of performance changes. Standard reaction-time tests used in clinics are not practical in the field and mobile touchscreen tests can vary from trial to trial by tens of milliseconds, masking alterations that represent cognitive impairment. Pison has developed and commercialized a wrist-wo

Influential Factors and Preliminary Reference Data for a Clinically Feasible, Functional Reaction Time Assessment: The Standardized Assessment of Reaction Time.

CONTEXT: Clinical reaction-time (RT) measures are frequently used when examining patients with concussion but do not correlate with functional movement RT. We developed the Standardized Assessment of RT (StART) to emulate the rapid cognitive demands and whole-body movement needed in sport. OBJECTIVE: To assess StART differences across 6 cognitive-motor combinations, examine potential demographic and health history confounders, and provide preliminary reference data for healthy collegiate student-athletes. DESIGN: Prospective, cross-sectional study. SETTING: Clinical medicine facilities. PA

Sleep-disordered breathing and reaction time in children.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) in children exceeds the availability of polysomnography (PSG) to definitively diagnose OSA and identify children at higher risk of perioperative complications. As sleep deficits are associated with slower reaction times (RTs), measuring RT may be a cost-effective approach to objectively identify SDB symptoms. AIM: The aim of this study is to compare RT on a standard 10-minute psychomotor vigilance test (PVT) based on children's history of OSA/SDB. METHODS: Children, 6-11 years of age, were enrolle

[Peroneal reaction time: study of a normal sample].

Chronic functional instability is a residual problem after acute ankle sprain. Reasons may be weak ligaments and/or a deficit in the proprioceptive system. Studies have shown that peroneal reaction time (PRT) can be used to quantify proprioceptive performance. To test the influence of anthropometric data on PRT, an experimental study with 120 healthy volunteers was performed. Surface electrodes recorded the activity of the peroneal muscles after a sudden inversion on a tilting platform. It was found that PRT is not influenced by extrinsic or anthropometric data. Furthermore, the results prove

A continuous-flow model for phonatory reaction time.

The purpose of this study was to validate a proposed continuous-flow model of phonatory reaction time by investigating the temporal order of selected laryngeal and neurophysiological events involved in a phonatory reaction time task. Ten normal speakers participated in a phonatory reaction time task. Laryngeal positioning movements prior to vocal fold closure (laryngeal shift) and onset of vocal fold vibration (acoustic onset) were recorded with an electroglottograph. P300 brain potentials were collected simultaneously, and they served as an index of a central process underlying reaction time.

[A study on measurement of auditory reaction time].

In order to determine auditory reaction time, different test methods for central conducting modes (simple reaction, choice reaction, simultaneous reaction and time lag reaction) were carried out on normal subjects. As test sounds, pure tone, white noise and Japanese vowels were employed. The following results were obtained. 1) The results were simple reaction time 186 ms, choice reaction time 283 ms, simultaneous reaction time 288 ms and time lag reaction time 370 ms (delay time 50 ms), 361 ms (delay time 100 ms), 298 ms (delay time 200 ms) and 273 ms (delay time 400 ms). 2) Simple reaction ti

Perceptual discrimination and reaction time in hallucinatory schizophrenics.

Perceptual discrimination tasks were administered to a group of normal control subjects and the following three groups of schizophrenic subjects: those currently experiencing auditory hallucinations, those who experienced auditory hallucinations in the past but not at present, and those who never experienced auditory hallucinations. No one who ever experienced visual hallucinations was included. Reaction times (RTs) and accuracy in an auditory and in a visual perceptual discrimination task were recorded. The normal subjects were generally more accurate and had faster RTs than the schizophrenic

Reaction time as a diagnostic measure in senility.

Both simple and disjunctive reaction times (RT) are known to slow with aging but there is a paucity of information on RT changes in senility. Since disjunctive RT involves cognition in addition to the sensory-motor speed and attentional components of simple RT, it was hypothesized that disjunctive RT would be a reliable index of age-related mental decline. To test this prediction, simple and disjunctive RT were measured in matched groups of 20 normal and 20 cognitively impaired elderly. Simple RT was slower in the senile patients than in the normal subjects, but this difference was accounted f

Quantification of reaction time in an Arctic population.

BACKGROUND: Greenland is an Arctic environment with snow and ice on uneven terrain posing lifelong physical challenges to people in Greenland. In addition, Greenlanders are a distinct ethnic group. This led us to (1) quantify reaction time among Greenlanders (2) hypothesising a faster reaction time compared to previous findings among e.g., Scandinavians. METHODS: Data were collected using a portable device, the Nintendo Wii Balance Board, with the FysioMeter software validated for estimating reaction time. Participants were healthy Greenlanders living in West Greenland, who filled in a questi

Longitudinal assessment of post-concussion driving reaction time.

OBJECTIVES: Concussed patients present multiple neurocognitive and motor impairments including slowed reaction time (RT), a function essential to driving. We compared driving RT between concussed and non-concussed individuals across their concussion recovery (aim 1) and explored whether clinical concussion outcomes were correlated with driving RT uniquely in the concussion group (aim 2). METHODS: We recruited collegiate athletes (26 concussed and 23 age- and sex-matched controls) to complete the sport concussion assessment tool (SCAT5), a computerized neurocognitive test (CNS Vital Signs), an
