Adipocytes are not merely organs for energy conservation but endocrine organs secreting a wide array of physiologically active substances, i.e., adipokines. Of these adipokines, adiponectin is known to exert anti-diabetic and anti-atherosclerotic effects via adiponectin receptors (AdipoR)s, AdipoR1 and AdipoR2. Adiponectin has also recently been shown to regulate longevity signaling thus prolonging lifespan. Therefore, the strategy for activating adiponectin/AdipoR signaling pathways are expected to provide a solid basis for the prevention and treatment of obesity-related diseases such as the

BACKGROUND: Adiponectin (Adipoq), a protein secreted by adipocytes in inverse proportion to the adipose mass present, modulates energy homeostasis and increases insulin sensitivity. Tissue Adipoq signaling decreases in settings of maternal diabetes, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and endometriosis, conditions which are associated with reproductive difficulty. Our objective was to define the expression and hormonal regulation of Adipoq and its receptors in the mouse preimplantation embryo and uterus.
METHODS AND RESULTS: By real-time quantitative PCR, mRNA transcripts for Adipoq, AdipoR1, Ad

Adiponectin is a cytokine secreted specifically by adipocytes that has been proposed to enhance insulin sensitivity and prevent atherosclerosis. Adiponectin receptors (adipoR1 and adipoR2) are recently found in mice which act as receptors for globular and full-length adiponectin to mediate the fatty-acid oxidation and glucose uptake in muscle and liver. The primary goal of this study was to examine chromosome localization of porcine adiponectin and adiponectin receptors and the gene expression pattern in various tissues of pigs of the three genes. Radiation hybrid mapping demonstrated that por

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: We recently showed that adiponectin, an adipocyte-derived cytokine, may function as a negative regulator of the Toll-like receptor signaling pathway and of osteoclast formation in periodontal disease. In this study, we investigated whether the expression levels of adiponectin receptors (AdipoR1 and AdipoR2) are related to the presence of periodontitis.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We initially examined, using RT-PCR, the expression of the AdipoR1 and AdipoR2 genes at the mRNA level in several oral tissues of C57BL mice. Next, we investigated (using real-time PCR assays) whe

Adiponectin and adiponectin receptors (AdipoR1/2) are expressed in various tissues and are involved in the regulation of multiple functions such as energy metabolism and inflammatory responses. However, the effect of adiponectin and AdipoRs in submandibular glands has not been fully evaluated. In the present study, we found that mRNA and protein of both adiponectin and AdipoR1/2 were expressed in rat submandibular glands and in the SMG-C6 cell line, as evidenced by RT-PCR and Western blot analysis. Immunofluorescence staining showed that adiponectin was diffused in the cytoplasm, while AdipoR1

Adiponectin (ADPN) is related to fatty acid synthesis and oxidation in mammals. In chickens, the lipid metabolism, structure and sequence of ADPN are different from that in mammals. The aim of this study was to determine the role of ADPN in broilers lipid metabolism by investigating the temporal and spatial expression profiles of ADPN and its receptors, as well as their response to feed restriction. The results showed that the abdominal fat has the highest expression level, followed by the duodenum, glandular stomach, heart, hypothalamus, liver, and skeletal muscle. Broilers have high energy m

The role played by hereditary factors in the development of diabetes mellitus type 2 (DM2) has not yet been fully established. Therefore, the purpose of our study was to investigate the prevalence of adiponectin and polymorphism in its gene receptors in connection with the primary symptoms of DM2 pathogenesis. Genomic DNA was isolated from the whole blood of 94 patients with an established diagnosis of DM2 using the phenol-chloroform method. Gene polymorphisms were determined using real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The most common polymorphic variants in patients with DM2 were the gen

When a female mosquito takes a blood meal from a mammalian host, components of the blood meal can affect mosquito fitness and indirectly influence pathogen infectivity. We identified a pathway involving an Anopheles gambiae adiponectin receptor, which, triggered by adiponectin from an incoming blood meal, decreases Plasmodium infection in the mosquito. Activation of this pathway negatively regulates lipophorin expression, an important lipid transporter that both enhances egg development and Plasmodium infection. This is an unrecognized cross-phyla interaction between a mosquito and its vertebr

Zika virus (ZIKV) is a pathogenic member of the flavivirus family, with several unique characteristics. Unlike any other arbovirus, ZIKV can be transmitted sexually and maternally, and thus produce congenital syndromes (CZS) due to its neurotropism. This challenges the search for safe active molecules that can protect pregnant women and their fetuses. In this context, and in the absence of any existing treatment, it seemed worthwhile to test whether the known cytoprotective properties of adiponectin and its pharmacological analog, AdipoRon, could influence the outcome of ZIKV infection. We sho

Obesity is frequently associated with malfunctions of the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and hyperaldosteronism, but the mechanism underlying this association remains unclear. Since the adrenal glands are embedded in adipose tissue, direct cross-talk between adipose tissue and the adrenal gland has been proposed. A previous study found that adiponectin receptor mRNA was expressed in human adrenal glands and aldosterone-producing adenoma (APA). However, the expression of adiponectin receptors in adrenal glands has not been confirmed at the protein level or in other species. Furthermo

Obesity is associated with a higher incidence of thyroid cancer. Adiponectin is one of the most abundant adipokines with a pleiotropic role in metabolism and in the development and progression of cancer. It has been shown that circulating adiponectin level is inversely associated with the risk of thyroid cancer. This study aimed to investigate the possible association between the expression of adiponectin receptors (AdipoR1 and AdipoR2) and clinicopathological variables in papillary thyroid cancer. We found that protein levels of AdipoR1 and AdipoR2 were increased in some thyroid cancer specim

Cancer epidemiology, biomarkers & prevention : a publication of the American Association for Cancer Research, cosponsored by the American Society of Preventive Oncology2011eng
BACKGROUND: Adiponectin, an insulin-sensitizing adipokine, is inversely associated with adiposity and prostate cancer risk and progression. However, the role of genetic variation in the adiponectin (ADIPOQ) and receptor genes (ADIPOR1/R2) in prostate cancer is largely unknown.
METHODS: In a nested case-control study of 1,286 cases and 1,267 controls within the Physicians' Health Study, we evaluated 29 common single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) in ADIPOQ (n = 13), ADIPOR1 (n = 5), and ADIPOR2 (n = 11) in relation to the risk of prostate cancer. In subgroups, we also evaluated the association

Adiponectin, one of the several adipocytokines secreted mainly by the adipose tissue, plays an important role in regulating energy homeostasis and controls female fertility. Female reproductive functions are closely associated with nutritional status, and adiponectin seems to be an important factor linking the regulation of metabolic homeostasis with reproductive processes. The biological activity of adiponectin is mediated by two distinct receptors, adiponectin receptor 1 (AdipoR1) and adiponectin receptor 2 (AdipoR2). The objective of this study was to determine the presence of and changes i

INTRODUCTION: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a metabolic syndrome among pregnant mothers that increases the risk of developing growth disorders in the fetus and the placenta. Adiponectin is an adipokine, which plays a central role in the regulation of glucose and lipid metabolism, energy homeostasis, and insulin resistance in various tissues. Quercetin is a natural flavonoid with beneficial effects in the diabetic animal model, but data related to its effect on histological change and adiponectin system in the placenta of GDM are limited. In the current study, some histological changes

Adiponectin is a hormone secreted primarily by white adipose tissue. Recent studies have shown that adiponectin and its receptors (AdipoR1 and AdipoR2) are expressed in different reproductive tissues, including the ovary and uterus. This newly discovered endocrine system plays an important role in the regulation of reproductive processes. The expression of the adiponectin system in the porcine uterus during the oestrous cycle has not been researched to date. The aim of the present study was to investigate the presence and changes in adiponectin system expression in the porcine uterus on days 2

Intake of nutrients and water from diet to maintain life, a typical physiological function of gut, is highly dependent on the extensive immune network, whose imbalance is easy to induce inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) including Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC). Clinical strategies to completely cure IBD are poor, so it is urgent to develop novel drugs or targets. Adiponectin (APN), an adipokine from adipocytes, regulates energy metabolism and immune response. High levels APN are inversely associated with CD severity UC colonic fibrosis. However, the mechanism by which APN inte

Adiponectin, a pleiotropic cytokine, exerts its effects via the specific receptors AdipoR1 and AdipoR2. Whereas circulating adiponectin concentrations decrease in women with endometriosis and endometrial cancer, possible effects of adiponectin and the presence of the receptors in the endometrium have not been determined. In this study, we examined the expression of adiponectin receptors AdipoR1 and AdipoR2 in the human endometrium and assessed effects of adiponectin in endometrial cells. Expression of AdipoR1 and AdipoR2 in endometrial tissues was evaluated by real-time quantitative PCR, in si
